In an interview, Director Deepa Mehta alluded to the idea that sweet love stories resonate with Indians because they are full of moments of "wonder." They are "adbhut" (अद्भुत), which is one of the nine emotions in the Navarasa framework found in the Natya Shastra (a Sanskrit treatise on the performing arts). All love stories (queer, straight, undefined) can be full of wonder, subtlety, and sweetness. What could be more Indian than these deep emotions and the fluidity of the human experience? 🇮🇳🕉💖💖💖

I also feel like they should in a way, focus on giving us queer romances, without all the internalized homophobia and baggage and telling the parents and stuff. Just give us the typical generic romances with all the conventions in an Indian romance, just the characters will not be cishet people. Movies like this could attempt normalisation of queer love, without seeming "foreign" and "western" and forced upon. Essentially what Hollywood did with introducing POC in their movies in the 90s and 2000s. Just "straightifing" these movies could be a great starting point for conservatives until they decide to open their eyes and actually try to understand queer issues. You know what they say "If you want to convince someone to listen, you gotta give them something they want to hear and gradually mix what you actually want them to listen to" I must also acknowledge that this should not replace the movies we are currently getting but sometimes, people just want a nice romance without it being deep. Even queer people (probably, not sure)

@@jelliclesongs If movie makers keep focusing on these movies with deep emotions without giving us lighthearted stories too, that's what the community will be known for. Being overly emotional and constantly talking about their oppression which is true to the fullest extent, but you don't just want to be known for that. It will just tain their image, to a bunch of crybabies which they're definitely not!

I am proud of my Hindu culture and my religion the treats everyone equally. Hinduism always supported homosexuality and considered it very normal. There are several Hindu temples which have carvings that depict. both men and women engaging in homosexual acts. Same-sex relations and gender variance have been represented within Hinduism from the vedic times. Even Kama Sutra, a Hindu text detailing the pleasures of sexuality, states that same-sex experience is "to be engaged in and enjoyed for its own sake as one of the arts." My religion gives equal opportunities for everyone to lead their lives happily and respectfully Hindu religious Scriptures have many such characters and references too. Examples: 1. Agni, the god of fire is married both to the goddess Svaha and the male Moon god Soma with Agni having a receptive role in this relationship 2. Lord Shiva who is the ultimate embodiment of masculinity has also been depicted as Ardha Nareeshwara a. Lord Vishnu. the protector of the world is clearly depicted as gender-fluid, Lord Vishnu even procreated with Lord Shiva in the Mohini form, resulting in the birth of Lord Ayyappa (The Hari-Hara Putra : Son of Hari and Hara) 4. Lord Krishna also took the form of Mohini in order to marry Aravan to satisfy one of the hero's last, requests, according to the Mahabharata. After Aravan's passing, Krishna stayed in the form as the hero's widow for a significant, period of mourning 5. Shikhandini, met a yaksha and exchanged genders and remained a man until his death at the battle of Mahabharatha, 6. In Holy book Ramayana, Sri Rama grants hijras the ability to confer certain blessings, the beginning of the badhai tradition 7. Ancient. texts of the Brahmana depicts Mitra and Varuna as alternate phases of the moon who join in same-sex relations. On nights of the new moon, Mitra injects his semen into Varuna to start the moon cycle, with the favor returned upon the full moon 8. Bhagavati-devi is considered today to be the goddess of cross-dressing and more than 5,000 male worshippers dress as women each year for the ritual Chamayavilakku festival in Kollam. So stop disrespecting Hindu culture and religion by making Homophobic comments. anybody who goes against that is a disgrace to Sanatan dharma

Loved the video but as a queer person living in an urban area, I would like to add that queerphobia is not limited to rural areas
@jelliclesongs

Oh yes, completely agree. I read some research papers that compared urban to rural areas and they suggested that it can particularly hard in the countryside but appreciate you sharing how it’s still difficult in urban areas!

@@jelliclesongs Ohh i think for that you could've used the phrase "especially in rural areas" Instead of "particularly in urban areas"... And i also wanted to add that there's also a decent amount of homophobic young people (though they might be less in numbers than as compared to old people).My theory would be that since queerphobia is systemic, it just gets passed down because of societal norms

Yeah, systemic homophobia is a worthwhile problem to solve for sure 😔

When we talk historically be it pre-independence there has been many mentions of queer stories such as lihaaf(the quilt) by the writer Ismat Chughtai which was kept concealed under the cover of societal norms. And when we talk about India specifically where all the religions the belief systems exists it's a really long way because talk about Muslims Hindus the fanatics the religious one's they're tied up to those rules that there forefathers lived with. Now i just sit back and I see my partner of 4 years getting forcefully married into a straight marriage because that's just how these humans work and to think if we'll ever end up being alright in such place is still a question.

😢 thank you for sharing. It’s quite difficult to hear. I’m quite motivated to keep raising this issue in the hopes that we see national policy change and a shift in social attitudes. 🧡🧡🧡
