Great video! Wanted to point out another huge difference with the remake I’m not surprised Derek, a non Spanish speaker, didn’t pick up on: in the new game the enemies FINALLY speak with a Spaniard accent! In the original game they all inexplicably had a Mexican accent of sorts (some didn’t even sound like native Spanish speakers). For us this is as bad as it’d be for English speakers if you’d play a game set in London but every NPC there spoke in an American accent. They clearly paid attention and took care of the details (also probably the game being mocked by Spanish speakers for 18 years might’ve had something to do with it). Not in the remake though! They finally speak like Spaniards, in very naturally sounding dialogue, and clearly hired native Spanish speakers. At last!

The barrels were lit up in the original. The paint was an alternative to make sure the player could still tell which elements of the scenery are breakable without making them feel unnatural.
@ANeMzero
Жыл бұрын
The barrels being brighter than their surroundings is a good example of a technical limitation being beneficial. Older consoles couldn't handle fully dynamic lighting for complex scenes, so they'd pre-render all the shadows for the world and save that as a separate texture map that gets placed over the normal material textures. The problem with this method is that, because none of it is happening in real time, it doesn't work for dynamic objects. There was still a lighting system affecting them but it was a much simpler dynamic solution that gave really flat results. The result is any dynamic object like a breakable box will stand out among the scenery. Capcom would have had to intentionally break how RE Engine handles lighting to get the same effect in the remake. They probably could have done that but everyone would just call it a bug and criticize them for shipping with "broken lighting." So instead we get paint.

@suhfee
Жыл бұрын
@@pigaboyAKAthecoolestguyonearth that's more a biproduct of how the lighting in these games interacts with textures. the base textures are really reflective and seem like they *emit* light. this was probably so they are easier to see amongst a scene, but gamers can be really inattentive and now we have paint everywhere.
@rickydo6572

@@PowerArmorV113 *So many "realism fidelity" folks who wouldn't know art direction if it came and bit them in the face.* That's what I've been saying for years now, I see so many "realistic graphics" mods for games that look like absolute and utter garbage because there's no consideration for art direction whatsoever. They just mess with exposure, add shittons of reflections and bloom, add high res textures to objects without considering how well it will fit the game's artstyle and call it "good graphics" I've seen waaaaay too many "Ocarina of time in UE5/UE4" videos that look like absolute trash and people love them just because the creator added all of the bells and whistles that come with modern engines, but without trying to actually translate Ocarina of Time's graphics to modern day. Realism isn't good graphics, in fact, many "realistic" looking games are just bland and boring as hell visually, it's always the artstyle that carries a game's visuals, that's why something like Minecraft will always look more unique and iconic than fucking Far Cry or somethin (not commenting on how good any of these games are tho.) because realism comes as an excuse to lack of inspired artstyle more often than not.

Since you mentioned Leon's inability to move, I remembered how this was changed in the VR version. In the original, the zombies run to you, but stop and start walking instead when they're in front of you, giving you some time to aim. In the VR version, you CAN move and shoot at the same time, so the zombies just run all the way to you; they don't stop to walk anymore.

Purchasing the deluxe edition of the game actually gives you an option to change several BGMs and sound effects into those of the original game. I've just completed the game for the first time and the title screen changes to the village, but all of it is 3D rendered, and I just turned on the original sound option when I completed it. Imagine my surprise booting up the game again and hearing the classic "RESIDENT EVIL 4" on top of the classic title screen, really hits me with nostalgia :))) I do wish this option is not locked behind a paywall though :(

the asset reuse is honestly really cool. you can tell a huge amount of re8's aesthetic and design is in active conservation with and calling back to re4. it means these assets don't feel out of place and if anything adds a bit to the new vibe of some areas. i will say, certain sections do feel a little *too* re8. it is also annoying to have to relearn what drawer models are interact-able, since a lot of re7/8 stuff is downgraded to static scenery.

On the subject of that IGN reviewer tangent: "RE4 was never good revisionism" began with fans of Classic Resi lamenting the loss of the old fixed camera angle style (which... Yeah, it's hard to blame them nowadays, RE2make going over the shoulder was the absolute final nail in fixed camera's coffin, may it rest in peace,) and has been survived all along by pissbabies who aren't willing to meet a game halfway, instead insisting that any time a shooter doesn't control like every other shooter, it's a mistake that needs to be fixed. A stance that Capcom tacitly gave in to when they enabled movement in aim mode in RE6, because Capcom has no integrity.
