Actually the approach pattern is made through a left turn coming from a downwind leg over the city. the turning point, then, is before the sugar loaf. The landing can be made by the bridge side too, but is less challenging hahahah The airport is mainly used for hub connections and domestic flights, so it’s essential to unload the airspace, as there are only two main airports in the city. Saudações do Rio de Janeiro! 🤘🏻

Santos Dumont is basically a "regional" or domestic airport, takes the embraers 190/195, 737 and 320 WITH SPECIAL BREAKING KITS, known as Short Field Performance (SFP)... that's what you probably didn't know about. The bigger planes ONLY operate at Tom Jobim, wich is a much bigger airport in Rio. Santos Dumont is great considering the place it's located, at the center of the city, which is quite convenient. So no, it doesn't necessarily need to be closed. The airport has several technical regulations (mainly weight-related) about it, and it's not accidental that Brazil is so well ranked on ICAO safety ranking. It's safe... And the best one to take the greatest landing pics. ;)
@cscolar

The ignorance about the airport is tremendous. The authour seems not to have asked anyone with proper knowledge about SDU. The facts: no widebodies use this airport, only 737s, A320 family, and e-jets and private jets. No runway overrun that I can remember. The approaches are totally different than discribed. This airport is used only for short range domestic routes. International flights and long range domestic flights are handled by the much bigger Galeão International Airport.
@Mssmaimone

@@cscolar There was a famous runway excursion in Santos Dumont Airport during the 90s, a Varig 737-300 operated by the longest flying pilot in this very airport, Sérgio Lott. No souls were lost in the event and later Captain Lott revealed his mistake, as the copilot was the PIC during the landing (nowadays Gol, Latam and Azul, the three biggest operators in Brazil, have operating restrictions at SBRJ, only the captain can be the PIC during the operation) and they were very high during the final approach, though the copilot asked if they should miss the approach, Lott insisted in landing.

@Swiss001 the real approach on that airport was actually doing a hard turn on "pão de açucar". second thing, the airport was built on a landfill so he didn't took any space from the buildings. And why it shouldn't be closed: Santos Dumont Airport operates the "ponte aérea" that is a short flight that communicates Rio and São Paulo (the 2 biggest business cities in Brazil) by operating the 2 famous airport, Santos Dumont in Rio and Congonhas (that you already made a video about) in São Paulo. And you should be asking why the hell this route exists and why do they use those none overrunning airports, it is just to make the comunication of those 2 big cities possible without overloading the bigger airports that is Galeão in Rio and Guarulhos in são Paulo. Thank you for this awesome vid and i hope you see my comment, because i took a while to type 🤣👍✈

Santos Dumont Airport is used for national flights and its route to São Paulo (Congonhas Airport) is the busiest in Brazil. Its proximity to Rio’s center makes it perfect to this short flight between Brazil’s two largest cities. First officers are not allowed to land in SDU, only captains are. The biggest airplane that operates there is the Airbus A320neo. And no, it shouldn’t be closed. The approach to this airport is definitely the most stunning in the world.

also, you do not approach the airport like this, you usually approach through the other side, or you go around the sugar loaf, but normally, you come from the north, and then you turn steeply, it is complicated, but it works

another interesting fact is that there is a (public) avenue at the end of the runway, which gives access to an islet (which is the Naval School, as you can see in the video) and anyone can circulate there. many people stay there to watch the planes, despite the danger.

FYI the approach you used is in correct, you don’t come in straight rather, you come in from a near parallel angle and make a near 180 degree turn into the airport (you go from the right towards the bay with the cables make a left inside the bay and line up that way)

I mean, this airport helps to ease out some of the traffic from the other (waaaay bigger) international airport and it’s A LOT of traffic given it’s the second largest city in Brazil (more than 6 million inhabitants), and one of the biggest tourism cities in Latin America. I’ve personally flow a lot of times from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro using this airport and it’s a MAGNIFICENT approach like, soooo beautiful.

I live in Rio and Santos Dummont is one of the most important airports in Brazil specially for short flights like Rio - São Paulo. Many people prefer going to Santos Dumont airport than going to that bigger one (Galeão Airport). Santos Dummont is much closer Downtown.
@jacquesdemolay2699
6 ай бұрын
the main Rio airport is Galeao - and there you would find no issue - no terrain issues at least. Santos Dumont by the end of WWII started to shift bigger aircraft to Galeao which was a military airport but then gradually converted to dual airport - to finally become the main Rio airport and Santos Dumont remains useful for small regional aircrafts, including 737.

@vsevangelista

The largest aircraft operating in SDU is the 737-800, by GOL airlines. There's never been 747s landing there. It's a really busy airport, because of its proximity to downtown in Rio de Janeiro. GIG is much larger, but it's far from downtown and traffic is really bad around there. SDU is definitely challenging, and its approaches gives passengers really nice views from the city and its beautiful mountains, I guess the most beautiful approach I have ever seen!

Whenever I fly into Rio I always try to book a ticket to Santos Dumont airport. It is way more practical to land there and also safer. Landing in “Galeão “ (the other airport) means taking a bus/car ride by the most dangerous highways in Rio to get to your final destination. Also, if I’m not mistaken , planes approach the runway in the opposite direction of what you did. So, I guess that makes it easier to land. Replacing the airport with buildings would certainly make a lot of rich people really happy.
@danw7943

I don’t think Río de Janeiro-Santos Dumont (SDU) should be removed, because Río de Janeiro-Jacarepaguá (RRJ) is more of the general avaiation airport, and Río de Janeiro-Galeão (GIG) is more of the int’l airport; hence making SDU more of the reg. airport. Thank for the video:)

Santos Dumont was the first airport to be built in Rio. It lays next to city center which is a business area. Flights there are only national medium range flights very much related to corporate flights between Rio and other comercial hubs. And that is the reason why it is open, it makes doing business in the city easier. Galeão, the larger airport is about 1h away by taxi, and there are no other public transportation besides buses. Fun fact: boing built a short-range 737 model due to requests to operate in this airport :)

The father of a friend of mine used to work as an ATC on this island next the bigger runaway, one day he was leaving his job on a taxi when the taxi driver blew through the red light in the road behind 02R and they were blasted to the shore rocks by an airplane taking off, luckly he survived but the taxi driver died. In 1997 my aunt saw when a Citation fell on the water befor landing.
