Let it be known that despite Max seeming psychotically indifferent to blowing up a different version of Sam, he still almost immediately went to the elevator to find another version of Sam He’s literally proving the point of this essay that Max just can’t admit Sam is the most important part of his life

In Poker Night 2, Sam & Max occasionally have dialogues where they talk about an ongoing case, and each conversation changes depending on how many tournaments you've won. i don't mean to overhype this game to anyone else, but to me, it really is the best point 'n click adventure i've ever played, maybe possibly my favorite story as well. one of the things in particular i always liked about devil's playhouse is its subtle but constant sense of foreboding. like for example, literally the moment you press start and see that flaming max loading screen, you think to yourself, "oh that looks cool", but then after you beat the game and you see that loading screen again, you realize, "OH. from the very beginning, it's been trying to tell me ALL ALONG." and then again and again, the game constantly waves all the stuff that's going to happen right under your nose, and that makes playing it a second time even stronger than the first. this game's just a really brilliant combination of comedy & these surprisingly dark moments that you would never get in the previous seasons. we're probably never gonna get something like this again, and that makes me sad

I just love Sam and Max. And to me, I’m glad that Sam and Max is being exposed to more and more people are being exposed to it, and that they’re enjoying it. I love it. And I’m glad that Telltale took something so beloved, and expanded upon it. Gutting us, making us laugh, making us cry, and overall, making us think. Complacency is a thing both the characters and the company were going through, and by taking something so risky, and so utterly real, they got out of their rut twofold, and bringing a story that hits so hard… and honestly, it was enough to make me pause. Pause, and reflect, and internalize. And I think that’s what made this game, the Devil’s Playhouse, my favorite. It was complex, with different takes and doses of realism and comedy, and made it into something better than any “make it *real* “ take ever could. Not cynical for the heck of it, not funny with no feeling, it went the opposite route, and put everything together, and it worked. It bloody worked, and it’s incredible. This is why I love Sam and Max, in all their iterations, and why I really respect Telltale in that; it makes me feel so many things, and I just can’t help but be in awe. As a consumer, as a writer, it’s just inspiring for me, and I hope someday I can come to being half as reflective, half as clever, and half as daring. It’s just amazing.

Something I'm noticing about the devil's playhouse is that the settings and puzzles now actually serve the purpose of establishing a 3 act structure as opposed to previously, where it was pretty much just a string of problem solving events that eventually amounted to something. For example, "They Stole Max's Brain!" has a clear beginning, middle, and end, each clearly defined by a specific challenge and "location", each a natural progression from the previous: find out what happened to max in noir mode, break up skunkape and paperwaite in the museum, set everything back to normal in the Samunmak word. I love how it keeps things moving and feels like a real story with actual stakes and a well thought out plan the whole time as opposed to just at the end.

I like how there was some foreshadowing in the older seasons. Like, for example, Max was immune to all of the hypnosis, while Sam wasn’t. Hugh Bliss said that the only being that could stop was Max. They obviously planned for season three to be about magic from the beginning. It wasn’t like they came up with it as they went. Did they plan to rip our hearts out at the end, only to sloppily shove it back in? Maybe! After all, the loading symbol is Max on fire! (At least, in the remake of season one. I haven’t played the original season one, and I can’t force myself to play season two due to the fact that it doesn’t have my monitor resolution as an option, and everything looks weird. Also I can’t pause in the middle of a cutscene. I hope they remake it) Little side note, “Looks like it’s time to boil the haggis” is so extremely bad•ss _Skun’ka’pe_

I think Sal sounds better as the immitation of Warburton than actual Warburton. Not because I don't like Patrick's voice, or that Patrick's voice wouldn't fit the character at all. It's because the imitation provides a unique charm that is very Sam and Max to me. The fact that his voice is hearty, yet buglike, which is quite fitting, since he is a bug...guy.

I think you make an excellent point with the whole "dissecting the frog" metaphor. How do we treat these characters with reverence when, from the very beginning, they've been explicit commentary on the irreverent nature of their medium? Meta narratives have become a sort of "trend" in the late 2010s in an attempt to imitate deep writing, but The Devil's Playhouse did it years before it was popular - directly acknowledging that, yeah, this is all rather ridiculous, but it was always real. It always mattered. It's always Sam & Max. Fantastic video about a fantastic game - hopefully it comes to gamepass someday. You've earned a subscriber!

It’s been almost a decade since I played the Sam and Max games so my memory is a bit fuzzy, but I was really put off at the time by Max’s decision in the end to “save Sybil” and sacrifice his life to do so. I thought it was incredibly out of character at the time for Max to sacrifice himself for anyone other than Sam. What did you think about that part? You didn’t really touch on it but I’m assuming you didn’t feel it was as out of character as I did.
@BMask
4 жыл бұрын
I mean it's supposed to be out of character- that's kind of the entire point of the video and season 3. max having any kind of conscience for anything is so antithetical to what we know, but the Devil's Playhouse is about putting the characters through emotions and ideas we're not used to, and the Sybil moment is literally an act so outside of his wheelhouse that it leads to this version of Max being destroyed forever. Every time they go out of character there's a concequence, the whole thing's a big experiment to see if any of its possible. And it's fine because in the end they go right back to being the same as ever. So it's all good.

Very excited for the VR game that was announced recently, but you’ve hit the nail on the head with this video. The Devil’s Playhouse was by far my favourite Sam & Max adventure, one of my favourites of all time too. Having a review copy for this series, and experiencing the ending a few days early, and anticipating the reaction the Telltale forums would have to it was one of my favourite memories from that year.

Looking back at my steam library, I've got 2 hours of playtime logged in each episode of season 1. I have 10 hours of playtime in each episode of season 3. It was very good and fun to experience, and I played it over and over again. It's my favorite of Telltale's works; I wasn't really a fan of the Walking Dead style of game. So far as I know, the main downfall of Telltale was that they got overambitious with cranking out games and expanding and didn't check to see that the games were making enough profit to justify the company's expansion, and then it turned out it didn't and the whole thing fell to pieces. Sad, but at least they did manage to inspire others to continue the revival of adventure games.

Another reason, me thinks, is that with the bigger and bigger IPs, they had less freedom to add their own ideas to the games. By the time they imploded, Telltale were ironically also in the same trap LucasArts was in.
@TheBlueLink3
4 жыл бұрын
@@Toonrick12 I'm not sure that's completely accurate. While they did make stories for existing IPs, they usually were able to have a lot of freedom with the cast and setting, and with the general story beats. Of course, some IPs gave more freedom than others. With Batman, they made many unique changes to the mythos, making TellTale's Batman truly their own version.

I don't know if ambitious is the right word. To me it's the other way around. They thought they had a magic formula after the success of TWD and they just kept making the same game over and over with different IP's to the point that near the end Telltale games were kind of a running joke on how samey they were.

While I can understand why some would rank season 2 as the highlight, in my opinion theres really someth9ng S3 that makes this something special and an amazing sendoff to one of my fav niche IPs of all time. Thank you for this video. I’ve been a Sam & Max fan ever since I stumbled on Hit the Road at a Goodwill in the early 90s (it was my first exposure to Lucasarts adventures, before I’d only exclusively played Sierra On-Line). The TellTale Games were a godsend to everyone who wanted a proper sequel, especially after the cancellation of Lucasarts’s adventure department. I found the first two games very fun/funny and serviceable, but Season 3 definitely elevated the series and made me realize that this was the height of the TellTale Games; while The Walking Dead may have had more emotional stakes and I do enjoy The Wolf Among Us (being a Fables fan), Sam & Max is still the best.

I can agree with all of your points and feel that this is where the series is at their best (as of now). It really was a fitting end to this series and I can't wait to see it remastered. Now that I have watched this video and since I have seen the game and now that their is a new company (Skunkape games) I'm curious as to what they are going to do with the franchise after they finish remastering the devil's playhouse also can't wait to see which of the endings is canon. ***SPOILER WARNING FOR ALL S&M GAMES*** Just finished marathoning the games after getting all the way to S3E2 back when it came out (the non-linearity got to me ^^,) and now finished watching the video! "Logically speaking," I agree with everything here! The mechanics, the escalation, the change in direction -- all contributing to focusing on their interpersonal stories! The "Charlie Ho-tep" twist is a good one, the showdown is excellent, and the final stakes being not the coming of an Elder God but losing a best friend is a good way to skip a beat, all true! Bearing that in mind, I can't help but wonder -- did anyone else feel S3 was... A bit misguided? Like, yes, I'm *all for* telling an emotional story about Sam and Max, and on paper, I love it. The separation, the sacrifice, *mwah.* Chef Kiss. But... I dunno, I felt some nagging feelings even in E1 -- I get why they needed to transfer from the Grim Fandango Tone, but I think they leaned a bit too hard into the Telltale Tone, specifically The Wolf Among Us (see: dialogue trees and quasi-timed action sequences). S3E1 has lots of dead-end street locations, which made it feel less tight, compared to S1&2 multi-purpose, often-revisited locations (see: S&M's Office, Sybil's). E2... Honestly might be the most interesting to me of the bunch, but the Father's wing of the Tomb angers me on a deep, deep level. (WHY WOULD YOU ASSUME YOU CAN WALK THROUGH THE DOORS WITHOUT SOMEHOW REVERSING THE BAD LUCK CURSE!? WHY PUT THE PICTURES THERE, THEY'RE UNRELATED AND UNHELPFUL!?! WHY WOULD YOU THINK THE BLADES CAN CUT THROUGH A FUCKING STATUE, THE HALVES DON'T EVEN FILL THE WHOLE THING, THE ONLY REASON YOU'D THINK TO DO IT IS THE SOMEWHAT SUBTLE COLOR DIFFERENCE!!!) E3... Also pretty damn good, but the Sammun-Mak reality could have been its own 3/4ths of an episode. Also I feel the fact that you have to use the corn dogs twice is just a biiiit pushing it. And then... E4 had you literally trial & error the Dimensional machine at Momma Bosco's when even The Narrator, in Episode ONE no less!, says "you can't just randomly click things from here on out." Momma Bosco says you have to "figure it out," but up till now that meant finding an item or person who knows what to do! (See: having to read Stinky's mind for the 2nd hidden passageway -- again, I think having to do it twice is a bit pushing it, but you only have one area to explore at the time, so you won't be lost too long.) And yet, I can pinpoint the moment the spell was "broken" for me. When Stinky says Girl Stinky was a waste of DNA. "How could the writers miss that? He obviously knows she's a cake, since he made her. Oh well, maybe they changed up the writers... A bit careless, but okay." And then they reverse the twist. Girl Stinky was a mermaid all along, "can't you keep up?" (THE CAKE IS A LIE..! Was that intentional?) So... Okay, the big joke of Stinky turned out to be taken straight after all. Sure, okay, that's a twist, I think. And then Episode 5 starts... And you "have to find a team"... And then Sybil shows up, and "we have our team!", suddenly. Aren't the people already at Momma Bosco an assembled team? I found myself replaying it just to make sure I didn't accidentally trigger a dialogue too soon. And then you go inside Max, and get to his inventory. You get some... Honestly weirdly alienating quips about the old games. Wasn't the whole point that we were playing THIS game that we loved THOSE ones? It's okay to try something *new*, but you don't have to *kill* the old ones to do it..! Is that why you didn't even bring back the Office for the big reunion, because you truly hate looking back at it? Well, it's self-aware, I'll give it that... And then, the Narrator twist. So, leaving aside that that was, like, Twist #2 in the list of obvious ones when the Narrator says "one of the characters on screen will betray you" (#1 would be Girl Stinky, since the whole joke in S2 is that it's too obvious -- honestly, I had my money on the producer from WARP.) THE NARRATOR DIDN'T EVEN *DO* ANYTHING. *CHARLIE HO-TEP* MASTERMINDED E1-4 (was being in a tea party with a Mole Girl part of his master plan? It *was* pretty smart to have him "conveniently" appear for both Sam & Max and their ancestors, now that I think about it..!), THE ONLY THING THE NARRATOR DID WAS HAVE MAX SCREAM AT THE CITY AFTER HE *HAPPENED* TO TURN INTO A LOVECRAFTIAN MONSTER!! WHATTA CHANGE OF HEART THAT GUY HAD -- SAM HAD TO (comically briefly) PRONOUNCE HIMSELF FATHER TO CARE FOR SYBIL, AND MAX'S ID DID IT WHEN HE WAS A *LOVECRAFTIAN MONSTROCITY,* HOW AND ON WHAT PLANET. "WELP, IF I'M GONNA SACRIFICE MYSELF I BETTER BECOME GOOD FOR A LITERAL MINUTE. He literally was bad when the cutscene started, good when it ended, all in the span of 1 minute and 0 actions from neither you nor him, and he dies immediately after. Okay, that was *a good idea,* just rushed, right? It happens, *especially* in episodic narrative games with no long boss battles or what have you to pace it out. A noble cause with a slightly minimized effect... Then the after-credits. No, no one was expecting Max to stay dead, The Good Guys Always Win and all that, and we have to leave the door *unlocked* if not wide open just in case of another game in the future... But replacing Max..? With a Max who's mentally in Season 1? When we *just* had an *entire episode* dedicated to showing how much Max has grown to be more than just a psychotic rabbit-like thing? That almost feels like a targeted punch in the face. It's okay to stumble going forward, but you can't punch yourself so hard backwards. Looking back after writing this, I guess they went with that so any future S&M media doesn't have to rely on the growth they've had on S3, but... Having them do that IN S3 ITSELF... It kinda feels like they're saying "not only did you waste your time with THIS season, you've wasted your time since getting the music contract on S1E2." I think it must feel not-unlike the frustration felt by S&M *themselves* when *they* had to re-do everything S1E2-S2E4 over again, just to get to the same point, when these under-developed S&M get to enjoy their own time machine with none of the experience the originals had. All in all, I *did* enjoy my time with most of Devil's Playhouse. Stuff like the Banang easter egg (that I didn't know of, so thank you for that!) and the "you were right all along about Girl Stinky", the Sybil reunion and pregnancy, even Bluster Blaster recovering from the state it was in at the end of S2 -- all of that shows that, even under the Wolf Among Us coat of paint, they knew why we wanted to be with Sam & Max... I just think it's a shame that, even if we did take a bold, new, maybe even necessary step forward, we ended up stumbling two important steps back.

Your points makes sense. The "replacing the Max we built up over 5 episodes only to kill him later with an undeveloped Max" threw me off. I had assumed that Sam, after all the emotional bs he had gone through and is probably at his lowest point, would just magically be okay this. There'd still be some pent-up emotional baggage, right? Wouldn't it bother him that this Max isn't the Max he had gone through everything with? We saw how Sam gets when he believes Max had been killed, so why didn't he instantly slip back into that mindset when he realized Max was gone forever this time? But he sorta just... walks off? And is magically reunited with an alternae version of his dead partner who conveniently went through the same situation with his Sam? Again, I know that they had to leave the door open- but instead of leaving some ambiguity with the cracked door they just kicked the damn thing wide open. It was jarring considering the finesse that the rest of the Devil's Playhouse implemented. It made the whole thing feel emotionally gutted in the end. The mood went from "holy crap, what's Sam gonna do?" to "oh wait, nevermind. Max is fine and everyhing's okay now." instantly. That might've been the feeling you had.

@@tackyoptic Think you both missed some important beats here. Mostly this last one. The Max that arrives talks about how he went through a version of the events of TDP only with Sam blowing apart after becoming a giant monster- and max being max doesn't have as extreme a reaction, he's always been a constant and it's a big part of why Sam and the audience likes him so much. But seeing Sam hurt DOES have a visible effect on Max- and he very quickly decides the one thing they both need right now is A Sam and A Max to keep them going. It is a direct and perfect response to what they've both experienced without losing what Purcell always wanted- Yes, things don't always add up, yes, some elements feel throwaway, but 3 is a commentary on why Sam and Max avoids wallowing in any kind of emotional or truly logical depth by steeping them within it as far as it can possibly go purely to tell us that it's not what truly matters to those characters because what matters is it funny
