Thanks for making this! It's a really important issue that gets too little attention and isn't taken as seriously as it should. BTW, you mention recycling concrete but that's not really possible. It can only be crushed to be used as aggregate in new concrete and you can only put in up to something like 20% recycled aggregate in new concrete otherwise it starts to affect strength. And in any case it doesn't save on sand: once the mortar is wet, the sand is effectively locked in forever. :/

Ugh, this whole thing is so depressing. Quick question: is it possible to build skyscrapers without using concrete at all? I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I know very little about the subject.
@livingkiss
2 жыл бұрын
@@doubledutchclutch It's possible to make pretty tall structures out of wood. There's a plan for a 40 story building in Sweden (Tratoppen), which might be a bit ambitious, and many proposals for more moderate 15-30 story buildings in cities throughout the world. The main constraint limiting the height of timber construction is the increased wind strength at higher floors. Timber is much lighter than concrete and steel and therefore sways more in the wind. It's possible to get around this by reinforcing with dense metal alloys and smaller amounts of concrete.
@nos9784
2 жыл бұрын
@@doubledutchclutch there are lots of ways, concrete (and steel) are just easier and cheaper due to the head start on engineering, resarch and production. Any civil engineer knows how to work with that, while the building codes and good stress calculation shortcuts for alternative materials don't exist yet. Its not really more difficult, but we need to do all the mental work again, and we need to reeducate workers and retool construction companies. That takes effort, effort that could instead be turned into profit for private companies. So, it's going to be a struggle to force people to act smart and responsible instead of simple and selfish. There was a walled town in yemen that, due to limited space, built very high. Like 10-20 stories high and ~500 years ago. They used wood and adobe. Sadly, I forgot the name. I don't think the city survived the current war.

non-renewable/shortage -- they should take the unwanted smooth sand and dump it back on the beach where you harvest the desirable sharp sand. Smooth sand on a beach won't work for the same reason smooth sand in concrete doesn't work: The individual grains don't hold together but easily slide against each other. So there's nothing stopping the sand from riding the receding waves and being washed into the sea. It'd be like trying to build a Lego tower from marbles. I wonder how hard it would be to use concentrated solar power, create superheated air (or just use the solar heat directly) and use this to melt the surface of round sand particles, sintering them together into a porous mass that can easily be crushed into nice, razor sharp sand for construction. Mixing with cement and other aggregate should be enough to dull it sufficiently, though we seem to accept that concrete can peel our skin of and that construction workers don't live the healthiest lives.

A small piece of additional info. The roughness of the sand grains allows to more particles of cement to form chemical bonds to the sand (and other aggregates) making the concrete more cohesive and therefore more resistant.

He probably is more angry at desert sand, considering thats most likely the one on tatooine that would have bothered his entire childhood. Cant imagine how often he had to clean out his podracer because of it. Though one could ask the question wether or not he was aware that padme , with the whole naboo big seas thing going on, wouldve associated that statement with sea sand.

In the year 2027, a fictional war known as the Sand War erupted in the Middle East, pitting several nations against each other in a brutal conflict that would leave a lasting impact on the region and the world. The Sand War began when tensions between several nations in the Middle East reached a boiling point. Years of political and economic instability had created a powder keg of unrest, and a small dispute quickly escalated into a full-scale conflict. The primary cause for the war was control over oil resources, which had become increasingly scarce due to climate change and increased demand. The conflict quickly spread across multiple countries, with each side fighting for control over strategic resources and territory. The war was fought primarily in the desert regions of the Middle East, which provided a challenging terrain for all sides involved. The harsh conditions of the desert made it difficult to maintain supply lines and communication, and many soldiers suffered from dehydration and heat exhaustion. Both sides utilized advanced military technology, including drones, unmanned ground vehicles, and next-generation weapons systems. The Sand War was one of the first conflicts to see widespread use of autonomous weapons, which allowed for more precise targeting and reduced the number of casualties on both sides. However, this also led to concerns about the ethical implications of using such weapons in warfare. The Sand War lasted for several years, with neither side gaining a significant advantage over the other. The fighting was brutal, with both sides committing atrocities against civilians and prisoners of war. The war had a profound impact on the region's economy, with oil prices skyrocketing and many countries suffering from food and water shortages. As the war dragged on, international pressure mounted for a peaceful resolution. The United Nations played a crucial role in negotiations, and eventually, a ceasefire was agreed upon. However, the damage had already been done, and the region was left devastated by the conflict. Many countries were left in ruins, and the impact of the war would be felt for generations to come. In conclusion, the Sand War was a devastating conflict that highlighted the dangers of political and economic instability in the Middle East. The war demonstrated the importance of international cooperation and diplomacy in resolving conflicts and preventing future wars. While the Sand War may be a fictional conflict, it serves as a cautionary tale of the consequences of failing to address the root causes of conflict and the importance of working towards a more peaceful and stable world.
