Totally agree with the Point about Shadowrun being accessible. I got really late into Shadowrun, because I only knew about it through *Shadowun Returns*. What then really got me, when I was digging through Wikis because of it, to find out, that not only the History of the american Settings is highly detailed - even my Homecountry Germany has a deep and relateable Backstory, even up to, that the seperate States have their own History.

The recognition is a big factor in why I love shdowrun. It's really endearing when amongst all the crazyness and distopian cyberpunk extremes, you can still find things you recognize. I recently came upon a canonical metioning of the suburb I live in as I was looking up metatypes. Appeantly Raunheim becomes an ogre ghetto. That was so cool to me! Raunheim is this tiny place, close to Frankfurt. No matter where you go in shadowrun, you'll always come up on something you recognize. Locations, systems, memes or cultural phenomenons. Because office workers still talk around the water coolers. The place you went to college at, might play a role in your mission. Or you'll come upon people who are travleing to mekkah.

I love the fluff in Shadowrun. Our current group's rigger has an AR/VR pet panda and our technomancer (often "inspired" by my character) constantly fucks with the program. As a result said panda currently has a pink mohawk and a tramp-stamp-esque fur pattern on its back. Good times.

If I remember correctly there's a shadowrun setting, earthdawn, for medieval times, that follows the same scenario bat in late dark ages early middle ages. It's eath and all, but the sudden orks, magic and dwarves changed a lot.
@Superumouyun
7 жыл бұрын
Tis true. Earthdawn takes place in the 4th world and Shadowrun takes place in the 6th world. The two were canon when FASA owned both properties, which is why Shadowrun gets some of the immortal elves (Harlequin, Eran the Scribe, etc) and some of the great dragons (Duneklzahn/ Mountainshadow, Ghostwalker/ Icewing, etc) from Earthdawn.

I once played a character, who was an irish folk hero. Who on his death became a free ghost and over the centuries possesed several people to help other people and stuff. Essentialy my character was two persons, but the original body owner didn't know about the possesion. And the ghost was more of a passenger then a driver, until he awoken during last third of the campaign (12 sessions in). And if I find a new group, I would like to play an ai-controlled spiderdrone who merged with a now dead decker and got his personality traits.

I can totally agree. Shadowrun is a great setting and it is - despite it's two bagillion rules - quite newcomer friendly. It's so much easier to roleplay what your character does with his time and what he thinks about stuff in 2077 than in a medieval fantasy setting I really like playing fifth edition although it's sometimes super frustrating that the rulebooks are actually not that precise which leads to endless arguments wether something works a certain way or not

Awesome video Splattercat. I've been a huge fan of Shadowrun since I came across both the SNES and Genesis games as well. Played them both over and over again with friends when I was in my teens. After that we went out and bought Shadowrun 2nd edition. Since then I've played it off and on ever since. My wife and I actually bought some of the 1st edition Shadowrun books and played a campaign using that ruleset. Some of the best games we've played have been Shadowrun.

As a long-time fantasy RPG player, I don't find that I really have a hard time creating interesting characters without them being completely cliche but I also tend to enjoy the challenge associated with adopting personalities that are a little less relatable. That said, I do also really enjoy Shadowrun for all of the reasons you've talked about, it does an excellent job of 'grounding' its more fantastical elements with realistic futurism. Variety is the spice of life and all that, though.

If there's someone in the group who's more into D&D, you could technically appease them by having their runner enjoy Fantasy RPing in the matrix on their (in game) Friday nights. So then you can have a game within a game. (Since D&D exists in our world, it would logically exist in the future world.) Though it might add some complications if the runner playing a certain character dies; they'd have to find a new guy to take over the character or retire him in the game.

I never agreed so much, point by point, with pretty much anything any youtuber said. Your Shadowrun RP series with Enter Elysium was awesome as well. I'd love to see series about the SNES and the Sega versions. Old games, but classics that gave birth to gaming paradigms that hold true until today. That would be so wiz. Thanks for an amazing video, Splat.

the shadowrun universe offers a disturbing allegory to geopolitics and free-market forces in our world. I've loved the Shadowrun setting since I rented the SNES game many moons ago and read William Gibson's "Neuromancer". While I love the setting and fluff, the density of the rules is a hurdle. I've sat down with the core book and tried to hammer the basics into my head but it's like stereo instructions. Maybe it's just cuz I learn more effectively by doing though. Also, I wish the company with the rights to the tabletop would go under so someone who isn't ethically and organizationally questionable could get a crack at it.

You've probably mentioned this at some point, Splatt, but I missed; what's your preferred poison when it comes to tabletop, the current edition (5th) or something earlier? Since you mentioned Technomancers I'm guessing its 4th or 5th.
@blacksun3884
7 жыл бұрын
Well Splatt, that last example you gave is EXACTLY what happened in roll4it. You guys rolled down to the corner store for some snacks and to shake down the locals for info and guess who happened to run to his bike? Your target, ZZZ. You could have pursued him ala matrix highway chase or you could choose to let him run, which you did, but that was a very cool moment in the game. I absolutely agree with you that shadowrun is a fantastic world to get involved in. I was never one much for the Tolkien fantasy setting that D&D offered and always preferred a sci-fi edge to my entertainment but Shadowrun offers the best of both. It has the tolkien style races that many people are familiar with but collided with our modern society for that 80's sci-fi punk future that I love to see. I'm glad that my friend got me into Shadowrun. Black Sun the Decker is sort of that high power hacker fantasy I love playing.
@dragoneye6229

Shadowrun is well worth the crunch. That's the difference between most systems and Shadowrun. D&D crunch is largely ignored, such as donning armor rules constantly being ignored because it's annoying book work. Shadowrun keeps it's crunch relevant to what players will actually do and use. You can tell in how you can make an assassin that has poisonous orange soda breast fountains, and be successful at it.

Hello Splattercat san, I've been playing and running SR games since 2nd edition in the early 90's, back in JHS. Over the last 25 years or so, I've gotten pretty much all my friends into SR, and still run a game every few years when folks can get together, although the games tend to be framed around our more familiar hybrid 2nd and 3rd edition rule sets. I've been watching some of your Roll4It games (was super surprised that you and Aavak san know each other) and I was wondering if you've ever ran any SR games? I think you have the perfect sort of sensibility for it. Would like to see a Roll4It with you as GM. My apologies if you already have, and I haven't gotten to those episodes yet. Interesting thing, Shadowrun and role-playing is... There are often times when I'm in a social setting such as a business meeting, or speaking at a conference, or even making small talk with strangers, that I find myself slipping into the archetypes of one of my old SR characters. The words seem to flow smoother, the vernacular is slicker, and concept-to-speech just seems to come naturally. Have to give SR props for helping me roll those sixes when I need 'em in real life. Additionally, I think I got introduced to your channel with Corncob Collins. Reminded of him whenever I'm cleaning the sink with bleach. May he RIP.
