it really is a shame to see a game with such interesting and unique classes be outclassed and countered by the most basic class of its genre not only shooters have amazing kits, but they are extremely versatile, most of them work on most maps and modes, they dont really have a major weakness or gimmick and are able to work around high levels of preassure, hold forward and engage and desingage whenever they want, they deal with special and bomb spam better than any class and some can even cancel booyah bombs and ballers alone thx to their kill power, not to mention good paint.

I always feared this day would come. When I began watching tournaments and everything it was clear comps could get away with triple or four shooters but not do the same with other classes. I was kind of saddened as one of the things that I love about the game is the diversity in weapons and playstyles and I really didn't want to drop roller and possibly brush in favor of a shooter. That's why it was so meaningful to me when I found teams with unusual comps that worked really well (around the time I first found your channel, I believe). But with how meta is evolving right now, even playing roller in ranked feels so painful having to deal with constant special spam and just so much paint when I can't contribute that much in that aspect.

I agree completely. The last 2 Splatoon games have negatively affected chargers . the meta in the first game was too aggressive with things like quick respawn and all the buffs to shooters. The second game became more passive which is great for chargers but everything else pretty much countered chargers and virtually no buffs were given to them. Normal splatlings had similar issues but not to the same extent as the entire charger class.

The fact that shooters are designed to be easier to learn means Nintendo will make sure they are viable to make new players happy. The fact that they are the base weapon class means they're naturally going to be good in every situation (which is better than "best in some situation"). Guess it's a good time to go free agent...

I dont think it helps that a lot of backline weapons (like Chargers and long-ranged splatlings) dont have any way to help their mobility. Curling Bomb, Burst Bomb, and Fizzy Bomb are not on a single long ranged Splatling or Charger(Emphasis on "Long Ranged), with burst bomb not being on any charger at all. All three help with mobility and can deter shooters from approaching. I can understand why they didnt put these on the kits, as supportive subs fit better, but it doesnt help that said supportive subs are severaly outclassed by damaging bombs, which most shooters have on their kits.

i think the design of shooters just makes them likely to dominate. They already occupy every role, are quite versatile, and unlike other weapons as long as they have ink to shoot they have basically no moments of vulnerability like other weapons do, they can always react to a threat faster. Chargers and splatlings have to charge, dualies have to be stationary while at full effect and have predictable rolls at high levels, blasters are slow firing or have extremely low range, rollers just dont "fire" constantly and require a "wind up" if you will, brushes are predictable and short range, sloshes also have to go through an animation, and brellas are also quite slow firing. Im no competitive expert but this is just how i see things.

Yeah I really agree with the vulnerability comparison; like, if you're a range blaster and you have to poke into a painted area, if someone's hiding, what are you gunna do? You have to make the first move, and then it can be too late if a shooter pops out and lazers you in a fraction of a second

Shooter dominance could become a huge problem if Nintendo keeps the game in the same state of makes “unconventional” changes *cough* buffing special output *cough* for other weapons. I really think what kyo said about the shooters being hard to punish hits the nail on the head. They can make so many more mistakes than other weapons without being punished. Take dualies for instance. If you mess up an engagement with dualies, you’re stuck. Sitting duck. Shooters don’t have a downside really compared to other classes
@thesalamanderking3475

I never understood why Nintendo kept buffing short range shooters over the years. Everyone agreed since the start of Splat2 that .52 gal was weak because of bad kits, not a bad main weapon. Nintendo apparently didn’t get that memo, so every patch they buffed it a little more, and the power crept and crept. Now 52 has a good kit to use along with its obnoxious overbuffing and, low and behold, it is dominant. Poor move on Nintendo’s part. Short range shooters have always been the best group of weapons in Splatoon. They generally paint the best, kill the fastest, are the most forgiving, have the best mobility, and are the easiest to play. They only really suffer in the range category, but most of them have lethal bombs to help them deal with that. Why did nintendo keep buffing them? The Jet Squelcher situation saddens me. I’ve been maining the Jets since Splat 1 and this is the worst way they could’ve entered the meta. The Jet’s role on team should be that of an anchor who can seamlessly shift into a more supportive or aggressive role, with an emphasis on pressure and poking. It should be like playing a Splattershot Pro and a Charger at the same time. Before it became a Ray spam weapon, Splat 2 Custom Jet perfectly fit this role and was a very fun and strong pick, yet still niche enough to not be overwhelming. Current day Cjet is not that however, and it’s not even the weapon’s fault. Nintendo has (I assume unintentionally) balanced and pitched the game in a way that makes special spam the most effective strategy for anything that isn’t a short range shooter. It’s a critical flaw of the game and it effects all weapons across the board. Most weapons just build specials too fast, and whenever one spam weapon gets nerfed, the comp scene simply moves on to the next. The Custom Jet is a perfectly balanced weapon until you realize that it just so happens to get the fastest Ray in the game. Nintendo has allowed (heck, maybe even encouraged) the playerbase to turn Cjet into something that it wasn’t designed to be. Jet was challenging, fun, and unique because it allowed you to play a role that no other weapon could, and mastering that role was incredibly rewarding. Jet has been made less enjoyable to both play as and play against because it’s been turned into a brain dead special spammer. I have even become somewhat ashamed to play it because everyone else hates it so much. I don’t want to make the game less fun for everyone else. Everyone thinks Jet is only good for spamming specials now and has no idea about how much depth this weapon truly has, and in turn they think all Jet players are cheap, brain dead spammers who don’t need to be good at the game to be effective. Not only that, but us Jet players now have to live in fear of the next balance patch (or even GAME). There’s a reasonable chance that, in their effort to combat Missle/Ray spam Jets, they will nerf some other aspect of the weapon and hinder, if not completely ruin, that original unique niche that the weapon had. What happens if they nerf Jet’s accuracy, range, killtime (which is already really slow) or painting? What happens if Jet gets the Range Blaster treatment and is heavily nerfed when Splat 3 launches? What if they never buff it for fear of it being too good again? What happens to people like me who love the weapon and have dumped thousands of hours into studying it? In short, it just feels horrible to be a Jet player right now, even though we should be happy about our weapon being played more. In order for this not to happen, these are some things that I think need to happen in Splat 3: Weaker short range shooters, Weaker specials overall, Specials designed to be bad at spamming (inkjet, for example, is bad at spamming) Weapons that get special much slower ACROSS THE BOARD. If any or all of these changes are made for Splatoon 3, I believe it will be a much better game in the long run. That is, of course, if Nintendo stays true to these general design goals. They have a habit of re-introducing problematic balance decisions into the game (MPU damage up after it was one of the worst ideas in Splat 1, for example.) I just hope the next game never ends up like this.

Thank you for making this video. This is probably the least “fun” part about the balancing and meta in this game for me personally. Splatoon is all about getting away from the “classic” shooter genre. The other classes are so unique and interesting play styles, shooters are just way too versatile and favored. I don’t think shooters necessarily need toned down a TON with the direction the next game seems to be going? (Aside from a few Rn obviously) With the movement and maps and all. I’d just like to see quality of life changes and buffs to other classes more. For example, roller, blaster, and brella have always been my go to’s. Roller has horrible hit box inconsistencies and gets trapped easily, also relies on ninja squid which sacks your gear a bit. Blaster has insane ink lag among everything you’ve mentioned. Brellas are all different but ping differential is definitely a big one. Anyways yeah. If I could pick one thing to be “fixed” next game mechanics-wise it would be this.

One thing I think people gloss over a lot when discussing why shooters are so good rn is the amount of endlag buffs that they received in patches 4.2-4.4. The ability to cancel your shots faster allows you to mixup your movement more fluidly in the middle of an engagement and functions like a pseudo doge roll given how much easier it is for you to juke opponents by main strafing. It's also the part of the reason as to why so many people stack swim speed on shooters since main strafing is much stronger now, including the fact that it also lets you escape unfavorable fights, which combined the endlag buffs makes many shooters very slippery, and arguably more mobile than something like CDS, which basically relies on its dodge rolls to carry the main weapon.

I think the copius amounts of shooters makes the game less fun. I'm a huge fan of there being multiple unique weapon classes such as brellas, blasters, rollers, buckets, splatlings, chargers etc. I get that it's really difficult to balance such a diverse game, and they certainly did a better job balancing this game over the last. But if the best option in the end is the basic guns that are easiest to pick up and learn, that's just kind of a shame.

I think that Shooters will continue to trend upward because of ease of use. As a flingza player I have to make sure that when I try to move forward, even a little bit, I have to know that I will be able to take the area, alone or with my team, without making any mistakes in my gameplay, as it's so easy to get caught mid swing or while looking the other way, as the movement options are limited for me, compared to a shooter, that can easily move back or jump out, without having to wait to move.

imo shooters being dominant isn't a bad thing. their very design is centered around being super generalist. the problem is when the game is designed with variables that directly influence the flow of the game (paint, specials, moving/stationary objective), so having a generalist comp is the correct course of action whenever you're not trying to optimize a niche way of playing. with how the game is built, every meta shift has resulted in a brute-force way of playing (double jetpack in 2018, torp & the rise of armor in 2019, and armor and missile spam reaching new relative heights in 2020-now), so it's inevitable that shooters are going to be the objectively best class in the game.

Nah I definitely agree with Chara and others here. There’s nothing really wrong with them being generalists. The issue is that they’re good generalists. For example, some of the shooters have obvious weaknesses like sploosh and .96. Others have no weakness, but are just as strong as other weapons and paint as well. If they’re gonna have really good paint, decent range, and similar TTK to other weapons, they’re gonna be overpowered. An “all arounder” can’t match or outclass other weapons in all those categories. An even bigger deal is that other weapons are not optimized nearly as much. Other classes still don’t paint their feet, have insane ink or shot lag, janky hitboxes or internet issues, and basic needs like ink res on octobrush and dodge rolls.
@jayjaywon

@@Sizyphus I'm not saying the shooters are good in areas where it makes other weapons outclassed. What I was saying is that with how the game is designed it's inevitable that shooters are going to be dominant. im of the mind this is a case due to splatoon2's meta changes from splatoon one. specifically, roller, blaster, and charger nerfs. In splat 1 this "shooter meta" was no where near as prevelent. I definitely don’t think that shooters should keep having the stranglehold on the meta that they currently have. Just from the way I see it, the way many of the weapons are designed is one of two categories, constant fire and burst fire, and this is from someone who mains naut and KMachine along with squeezer. Shooters are constant fire, dualies are constant fire they just arent as meta due to their inconsistencies compared to shooters. Then I consider: chargers to be burst fire because you have to hold it down. blasters to be burst fire obviously. splatlings are a mix, you have to wait for the charge but then it’s somewhat constant fire. Sloshers are burst fire obv. And burst fire weapons are at an obvious disadvantage in many ways because of their lack of flexibility and (often going hand in hand) lack of paint, and many like blaster only make up for these by their gimmicks. So the only weapons that fall out of this are: brellas (burst fire but they have an interesting mechanic that makes them unique despite me hating brellas) rollers, and brushes. And sadly except for niches like Carbon, Permabrush, and Splat Brella/Kunder many of the weapons in these classes need buffs or redesigns. So i think what they’d have to do in splatoon 3 is first design more weapons that don’t fully fall into either of these categories, so that they can have some of the flexibility of shooter weapons, and second make sure the new movement options and new kits allow more burst-fire weapons to have better options for countering things like hammer, missiles, or bombs in S2.

On the whole I just feel really concerned about Splatoon 3. Maaaaybe they have a different team entirely handling weapon balance. But since Day 1 Splatoon 2 has always had bizarre balance issues and questionable decisions. If the game does come off as balanced in anyway, I'd argue it's mainly due to the sheer amount of weapon sets. I really hope the devs don't think the myriad of issues, however great or small, have not gone noticed. It's _very_ noticeable, even to somebody like me who doesn't full-on analyze the meta as it develops. I hardly expect perfection or no weapon set to be bad. I just don't want a "Splatoon 2 Part Deux" where familiar weapons return as shadows of their former selves because they were strong in the previous games. Then they spend patch after patch after patch undoing the damage. Remember boys and girls: Buffs are like eating a lot: Not hard to know when you've had enough, can be worked off over time, and you'll likely find a sweetspot. Either way the food is enjoyable. Nerfs are like dieting: Much harder to know if it's doing you any good, too easy to go overboard, potentially dangerous in the long run. And avoiding food isn't fun at all.

Biggest hope right now, at least in my opinion, is that they understand what was so good about the golden age of 2.0 to 2.4, understand where it all went wrong (cough cough damage up mpu, overbuffing shooter mains instead of realizing the kits were bad) and work on that going forward instead of trying to create a new problem to fix an old one. Maybe it'd be worth getting players to have a mess around with some of the weapons and kits, and see if anything is pointed out that doesn't work for it? In which case, I hope the testfire is a fair bit longer than even Splatoon 2, so they can test not only the servers but the core gameplay and weapons too.

I honestly believe that K-52 is the most overpowered weapon, mostly because of these reasons: this weapon was originally meant to be strong but heavy on the ink tank. however, when testing it, you can see how it's very ink EFFICIENT. not only that, it actually hits pretty fast, and has a good midrange. And even as you've said in the video, they're really good with special spam and inking. which... as a slayer, the inkability is a bit much, and the special spam just makes it go over the top. On a side note, I gotta say that the longer range ones are very fun to play with, but they are pretty dang slow, I mean- they move less while walking than most splatlings, which is concerning.

While I am only s in splat zones and clams ( I was s+ in clams but I got the L streak lol) I think they should tone down shooters a little bit and buff things to shooter level so shooters can’t just run in but I am only level 49 and got the game January 29 so I may not be right. I am a E liter main but I enjoy playing some shooters, brella, and blaster but mostly E liter just if you wanted to know.

Do you think nerfing main weapon ink efficiency for all shooters (or at least the "trouble" ones) would help balance everything out? It seems like a simple enough fix. Less special spam. Less bomb spam (since main weapons still have to be used at some point). Mistakes get punished harder since you could run out of ink mid fight, especially if you combo with bombs. Unrelated question: how would you buff heavy to make it more viable. It doesn't have the range or mobility to deal with some other backlines (see jet and constant special spam, or liter and its range, which, ya know, is fair). Hydra absolutely bodies deco in every aspect. Aside from out ranging heavy, hydra also shreds wall and bubbles. Remix doesn't have a poking tool other than booyah, but hydra is the only weapon I've found to be able to solo take down a booyah. Vanilla heavy has sting ray, sure, but....armor.

Fantastic, shooters are becoming more common and are by far in a way the best class in the game. If anyone say zones is the best mode, I will disagree with them because of the way people play it. Imo TC and clams are better modes for comp

Maybe it's because I almost never use shooters anymore, but Splatoon has never felt like a "shooting" game to me. It's most interesting when introducing new weapon types, in my opinion. So to see it dominated by guns... it seems a bit counter-intuitive. I assume they're trying to pull in a wider audience, but there's no point in adding so many different weapons types if they're going to get abandoned like this

Other than the subclass of semi-auto shooters, maybe there should be a gimmick added to the shooters? If we stuck to one of Chara's suggestions (I don't remember all the specifics), let's remove special spam. Let's stick to how S1 handled specials, but still have them team-focused like S2. Let's have team based specials stronger than they are in S2, but not as strong as S1.

Cmonnn it's boring and sad that the most basic class is the only overall viable class in the game, we want blasters, we want sloshers, we want the cool non-traditional shooter game weapons! Please, Splat 3!
@Akuma5500

It gets super boring to play only shooters in ranked to win honestly. I think the shooters need to be nerfed at something because they are good at everything. Most other classes have a weakness wither it be ink efficiency, accuracy, or not being able to paint / charge special because spam is a problem. I feel like the counter to shooters was supposed to be having more range but it's kinda pointless when they have the movement to close gaps super quicky. For the third game I feel like shooters should either stay where they are while the other classes get buffs or the other way around. I think a good nerf for them would be more points for special since they are the best painting weapons in the game. (Hopefully special spam I'm general is toned down for splatoon 3)
@legoboy7107

How good shooters have become is low-key making me scared my favorite weapon, Zap, is going to be bad in Splatoon 3 lol, or at least nerfed a fairly significant amount. I doubt it could be as bad as another Range Blaster scenario but you never know. Definitely much less likely to get the axe than 52 though lol, I'm expecting something significant to be done to that in Splatoon 3.

Mmm, sounds interesting to be an innocent beginner maining a great weapon on accident. Does it feel awkward? It's kinda funny for me, I mained blaster in Splat 2, and now I'm part of a... "repressed?" class? It feels awkward to me, anyway.
@legoboy7107

@@Chara-yp6zj "Innocent beginner." Hey man, I've been maining Zap for over 2 years and playing Splatoon for longer, and sure, I'm not in X rank because I have other stuff in life to do too besides grind Splatoon ranks and thus can only dedicate so much of my time to Splatoon, but I am in S-rank; not sure then how I'm still an "innocent beginner," and I didn't main Zap on accident: I've tried different weapons to see what suits me best and ultimately settled on Zap and Kshot as my favorites, but whatever. So to answer your question, idk what it's like to be an innocent beginner because my memory of that is a bit hazy because it's been a while, maybe it is interesting, maybe it is awkward, I wouldn't know. As for what I said about blaster, I'm not the only one saying Range Blaster got practically ruined, Chara has said that multiple times too; very few use Range Blaster because of how not good it is in Splatoon 2, and the only reason some in top level who know what they're doing do is just because they love the weapon and can manage to squeeze the best out of it that they can, not because it's particularly viable itself anymore. And I'm talking specifically about Range Blaster and how it was notoriously nerfed from Splat1 to Splat2 because of how good it used to be, not the Blaster class in general; I don't know what blasters you play so I'm not trying to call you "repressed," I'm just stating the pretty widely held view that Range Blaster really got the short end of the stick in Splatoon 2, again because it was so good in the first game, and never recovered or got any meaningful rebuffs. And I'm saying that given all these buffs to shooters in Splatoon 2, particularly to 52, there could be another Range Blaster scenario where they were so good in the previous game that some of them might get nerfed or overnerfed in the next game, like Range Blaster. (also btw this comment being so long is just me, I tend to talk a lot online particularly when trying to explain myself, sorry 'bout that; it's not long because it's some super angry rant or something, it's just normal for me).

@@legoboy7107 I guess I mean, when I was new to the game blaster became my favorite and I stuck with it, sorry for assuming. My perspective is kinda like, choosing what I liked with the game first, then I found out how the community felt about everything, and it was interesting. Some said blasters were braindead, some would say they sucked, I rose to X rank with vanilla blaster, which was an arduous experience, and it felt hard but rewarding, I heard about Splatoon's blaster dominant meta, and all the way up here, well, it's entertaining and stuff to debate about it like Chara has, and how it's like to fit in at this point in the comp scene and stuff. Btw, long explanations are cool. We could go on like this lol

I don't have an issue with shooters being a contender for meta, as they're balanced flexible weapons that should always be an option in case a comp wants to take a certain direction. My issue is that they're utterly just better at the moment as far as diversity goes. Every weapon should have pros and cons and it feels weird that whoever continuously buffed the shooters every patch didn't actually see this coming. Hell, I feel like design wise Dualies was supposed to be this high speed aggressive weapon type, but the only remotely competitive dualie is the longest ranged one for a reason.

What is your opinion on Semi-autos? I'm currently learning H3 and am interested in your opinion. Ive always been a shooter player, from when I started playing till now. I had some shorter and longer romances with other stuff, but ive always come back to shooters. My mains were orange zap (800k paint), dropped and picked up again with grey zap later, vdualie onetrick in C+/B rank for almost a year, 870k, dropped, tetras, 400k, dropped but still for fun, kshot dropped, picked back up again when it started to be played support, jr, dropped, picked back up, ttek (400k), dropped, grey zap, still a main, 1.5 million, mini, dropped, (400k, 2 months zap & mini twotrick), picked up jr again (1.4 million). The majority of these are shooters, and while they are bad for the meta in some way, they are just the weapon class im made for in this game, we'll see what the third game brings.
