When selecting the best core exercises, we need to look past just trying to build a 'strong' core. We need to rather understand the function of the core, so that with this context we can choose the best exercises to enhance the functional abilities of the spine. We have proven how ineffective the sit-up is as a core exercise and how doing sit-ups cause lower back pain. The US Navy seem to agree with these findings too, which is why they have stopped using the sit-up in their training regime.
