Hello Matt :). Polish insignia had red square top left from 1918 till 1993. From that year there is white square and red is top right. It may be a bit confusing;). The true is there there were some planes with white top left. They were mistakes made by pilots or technicians expecially in the first years. Also polish planes in France (1940) had such unofficial insignia at the hull.

Also, extra praises must be given for making you own decals. Even though you had a bleeding issue, when you used Micro Scale Decal Film, on the sheet. Good to see that spraying the sheet in matt varnish worked for you. Hopefully we will see you make more custom decals in the future. I know this kit from when I was a kid in the 80s. To get a kit at all those times was a question luck. There weren't any modeling shops then. If you got luck, you could get kits at the newspaper selling points (called kiosk RUCHu in polish). There was only a limited choice of models, sometimes some Soviet or GDR ones. This special kit had a trick in the assembly. You had to warm a knife to melt the axle of the spinner after you put it into the ring. It worked and you could then glue the ring into the model. Afterwards you could spin the propeller.
@ModelMinutes
8 ай бұрын
thanks for the info! That is an interesting story :)
@CrazyChemistPL
9 ай бұрын
I think what you are supposed to do with the propeller axis is put it through the round back piece without glue and use a heated up flat screwdriver or a blade or something similar to squash the end of the axis poking through, creating a sort of plug and allowing the propeller to rotate inside the round piece.
@ModelMinutes

This is a kit issued in 1983, when the idea was that company provides the base, and modeler has plenty of Putty and files and sanding paper. First editions didn't have lot of flash. Back in the day it was eagerly awaited kit since Airfix offering had issues with shape and measurement. Sad part is that the kit is still offered without information of it's vintage. I remember building it in mid 80's. I'll send photos when I find them. Propeller , you supposed to flare the shaft with hot knife to make it rotate. Good, old modelling.

@@ModelMinutes Things were different 40-50 years ago, though, and the OP is right about the even older (1964) Airfix Il-2. I've built them both back in the day and although this ZTS one is crude it's far more accurate. The chord of the Airfix wings and tailplanes is way, way too small. Not their fault, they did their best with what little information was available at the time on Soviet aircraft and at least they were prepared to have a bash at a very significant type. I think I paid around a fiver for this kit in the late 90s. I wasn't impressed but I was far more annoyed when I bought the Revell Merlin-engined Halifax that was released in 2011. Beautifully moulded but shamefully, eye-catchingly inaccurate despite abundant reference material.

Done this several times under oryginal brand ZTS Plastyk, design in general fits its era, however mould quality is terrible, everything is wong. You can try vintage Heller kits repacked by Smer or Mistercraft ad you willspot massive difference. Both Mistercraft and Smer will have crappy instructios, but Smer offers quite decent decals. Hellers from '70s are mostly fun to build. I am just building Heller's Hawker Tempest by Smer, and it hase similar parts count like this IL2 but it really goes smooth.
