Throughout his life, Tab Hunter kept a clean-cut image and was perhaps the most handsome blonde male in Holly wood in the 1950s and early 1960s. Glad that he a fairly successful career and that he was eventually able to live his life as the person he actually was. Too bad that was not possible in the 1950s!

I had the pleasure of knowing Hunter a bit in New Mexico during the 1990's. He had a horse ranch in Tesuque, a little town just north of Santa Fe, and he was writing a screen play about a girl and her horse for a German producer. He was very charming. When I told him how crushed on him I had been when I saw Island of Desire., he said he still had the hat he wore in that film.

Having met Tab later in his life and interviewing him… this was the story for everyone in Hollywood not just him. Bad boys, Bad girls, gay, straight alike. The movie machine paid a lot of money to keep your secrets. The fewer of secrets you had made it easier it was for your team to protect you. The same thing happens today with the artists and actors. Only now agents and managers care less about the gay angle and many use the bad PR just like the good. If you are being mentioned at all you are still relevant. It is so true that religion and close minded people had much more control back in beginning days of Hollywood. Tab said he was happy to see the day that actors and actresses could live their lives open and free. We have moved more toward celebrating people for being there, authentic selves. Remember, back in his time being gay we’re still illegal in many parts of the country/world. This freedom has only come about because of the legal changes to protect the LGBT+ community. We are no more or no less human, but simply HUNMAN.

Nice bit of Hollywood history I didn't know. It's sad that everyone, different, had to hide their sexuality. Not just actors. I love the ruse he and his friend, Reynolds played. Sad life with his dad. I'm glad that he got a happy ending. People can be so mean, I hope he helped pave the way for anyone gay to just be themselves.

You got it all wrong. Homosexuality does Not make anybody “less” human! Human attitude, if allowed, we’ll make other humans “less” human. Religion institutions are, in large, responsible for these negative attitudes towards Gay people. Religions are losing their influence, and to that degree people are getting more compassionate. God Bless Tab Hunter. What a Great Human Being and brilliant SOUL He is.

The description of homosexuality as a lifestyle is a blatant oversimplification of human sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular. Such indoctrination of the collective societal psyche is paramount to both the formation and maintenence of the self validating delusion of heterosexuality possessing moral validity. The reason that we never hear the term " heterosexual lifestyle " is because there is no need to categorize heterosexuality with such descriptively inherent connotative oversimplification in order to subconsciously justify contempt and hatred through subjective comparison.
@lynnbaker2336

Terms such as " homosexual lifestyle " are used in order to categorize people in order to make their vilification and demonization easier through dehumanization. To view people as individuals threatens said dehumanization and the permissive atmosphere that it creates for abuse to occur, which ultimately threatens people's subjectively comparative sense of moral superiority.

He quite simply had a ROLE as heartthrob to millions of females and regardless of tolerance or lack thereof - if his secret got out his role would be over. By all accounts he was an exceptionally NICE young man. He reminds me of a handsome and athletic boy in our high school named Ted, (ca. 1967) Who was always polite to the adults, well mannered, conservatively dressed, thoughtful and courteous. All our parents wondered why we guys couldn't be more like Ted and he was the ideal all parents wanted for their daughter to date. Of course he was gay which no one knew till much later.
