When I watched 12’s run with the season breaks, he felt inconsistent. But I still enjoyed it. I just bought Capaldi’s entire run, and binged it. Without the breaks, his arc is feels like an evolution of his character, and not inconsistent writing. Peter Capaldi is definitely the best actor to ever play The Doctor. I find the Moffat era as a whole to be rather underrated, especially the Capaldi era. I feel like a lot of the criticisms people have, while many valid, come from misinterpretations of what the story was meant to be. I remember watching each season of Capaldi, loving most episodes, thinking that each season was getting better, and being baffled by the fact that everyone else was saying the opposite. I was starting to think that I was an idiot for liking it. Glad to see someone defending it. Great video man.

I agree with all of this except the fact that he's trying to guard himself. I think he's just broken, he's exhausted, watched so many die. Lost so much. Even when Clara destroys his trust he still helps her, he agrees to find Hell if there is one, just so she can talk to him again. He still cares for her and always did, I don't think he ever felt that closed off. The Zygon speech also shows this more I think. To me, looking at his entire arc, it's more about the damage and pain he's suffered through. The treadmill, the more he saves the universe, the more it needs saving. The softest heart yet.

Peter Capaldi turned out to be an amazing doctor. By far he’s my second favorite over the entire run of the series. He was believably dark, brooding & constantly questioning himself. He was the right doctor to follow the 50th anniversary special. The man who regrets & the man who forgets. That man ultimately turned into the 12th doctor. It makes sense. And Peter Capaldi delivered a stellar performance.

A very lovely assessment of Capaldi's tenure as the Doctor. It has helped me reconsider what I personally felt had been a huge disservice to a beautifully skilful actor. I'm still not convinced about the whole appearing on a tank playing a guitar wearing shades and introducing the term "dude" thing. Possibly a nod to George Carlin's Rufus in the Bill & Ted movies. That said, this video has revealed and reinforced pleasingly positive aspects of Capaldi's 12. Thank you. Almost forgot, it echoes what I think Colin Baker was trying to achieve with his Doctor some 30 years earlier but he was sadly never given the opportunity he deserved to complete that character arc.

Excellent video. Peter's series 8 Doctor is exactly what'd you'd expect for someone who'd just spent centuries on the battlefield watching people die around him. I liked how his and Clara's relationship matured as well. Clara changed a lot as well from Matt's to Peter's Doctor. Eleven and Clara were dancing around the idea of being a romantic couple. With Twelve, they both realized they weren't some fairy tale couple and that while it wasn't romance, they did have a real genuine love or each other - true companions. Clara would take Twelve to task for things she would never mention to Eleven, because she wasn't courting Twelve.

Great video and your theory about the subconscious affecting the new body and look of the Doctor is certainly one worth considering. I'll share it with my Mom who has been watching the show since the '70s and got me to check it out back during Tennant's 2nd season. Twelve is my favorite Doctor largely for the reasons you've shared. I am a big fan of character development, and I love that Peter wasn't afraid to say that he liked playing the darker elements of the character, even if the series is meant to be a "family" show. I don't know people think kids can't handle serious or sad topics. I adore Capaldi's wonderful ability to mix silliness with sincerity that always feels genuine and not forced. I liked his work before he did DW, and now I'm an unapologetic fangirl who jumps at any opportunity to see his old films & TV series, as well as anything new with his name on it.

I was younger, around 14-15 years old, and I first thought that Capaldi’s Doctor wasn’t anything special. He wasn’t silly and human like Tennant, or happy, yet dark, like Smith, and so I initially wrote him off. Only watching through it now do I realize how much of an idiot I was. Going through it all now, makes me weep in sadness and joy. Capaldi was SO human that it hurt to watch him go, like I was actually losing a loved one. Great video. One thing, I always thought 12's regeneration was a reaction to the conversation 11 had with River Song in The Angels Take Manhattan where they're sitting on the steps and he has healed her wrist. River gets angry with the Doctor and says, "When one’s in love with an ageless god who insists on the face of a twelve-year-old, one does one’s best to hide the damage." and then she goes on to say how much it hurts. I think the Doctor's face was for River - and that would seem to be confirmed by the closing of her arc in 'The Husbands of River Song'.

Honestly, I kept my thoughts on 13 out of this video to avoid controversy. I think Chibnall is a very poor Doctor Who showrunner, and that reflects a lot in the 13th Doctor. I've seen some of her other work, so I know Jodie Whittaker is a good actress, but in DW she comes off as super wooden and unlikable. I'm guessing this is mostly due to the writing and directing. Also, 13 has been super hypocritical and has very weird moral values. I'm not a fan. I might make a video about her tenure in the future, we'll see. Thanks for the question!

@PikaCinemaI respectfully disagree. Whether you enjoy her performance or not is up to your own personal opinion, but none of the individual Doctors have ever been this confusingly unclear about morality before. When 10 traps someone forever, it's seen as cruel, something he tried to avoid doing. When 13 decides to trap all the spiders in a room to starve to death instead of just killing them swiftly, it's played up as her being generous. The writing was just bad in Series 11.

@PikaCinema Her confusing stance on guns that changes throughout the season, her quickness to murder the kid from kerblam who was clearly just disillusioned, her support of trapping Tim Shaw for eternity as a somehow morally superior decision to just killing him, I could go on. There are clearly many instances of her having a super weird morality system, the writers never really thought about it. And the several funny quips they write for her each week don't really constitute a personality.

@PikaCinema How is trapping someone for eternity make you a better man than killing them? One is an eternal damnation and the other is a merciful, final, judgment. 13 switched up her stance on guns because at the beginning of the series she hated them, but was fine with Graham and Ryan using them in the finale. And she made no attempt to talk down the guy from kerblam, like the doctor normally does in situations like that (zygon inversion, flatline, cold blood, etc.) We could argue in circles all day, let's just agree to disagree.

My favorite will always be 4, but 12 is very much up there. I like all the points you made, and I feel 12 was probably the MOST compassionate of all the Doctor's as much as that initially seems like an odd statement to make & might take a minute or two to get your head around. All of his great speeches are about compassion, which illustrates all your points, who could make such impassioned please for sense more eloquently than someone who knows pain & wants no one else to have to ever go through that same pain. As well as that he embodied the whole concept of not judging people by the their exterior more than any other doctor (see almost every conversation about appearance with Clara & the conversation with Bill about the Master being his man crush). (4 was very much like this too "You're a very attractive woman, probably.") :)

You have nailed this so very well. Thank you for putting it far better than I could have. It's what I knew in my heart but haven't been able to put into words. You are so damned good at that :) I think Capaldi is my favorite doctor, which I must admit has a lot to do with my life and where it is. I couldn't have loved Eccleston and Tennant any more than I still do, and with the mighty Matt Smith at the helm, the scope of the show attained the epic status it deserves. But nothing gutted me more than 12, and I am only now admitting that my Pollyanna wish that 13 will improve is simply ashes in my mouth.

I've been around since the first Doctor and watched every possible episode (missed some while in the Army). Almost cried when it went off the air, almost cried when it returned. Of the first eight I liked Tom Bakers Doctor best. His eccentric personality and happy go lucky way was just what was needed at that time. I was just getting back to the US after being gone so to have Baker take over was great. When Dr Who returned I find it a tie between David Tenent and Peter Capaldi. Mat Smith was ok, but mostly I looked forward to River Song episodes. There ya go!

Great video! Knew I'd love Peter as the Doctor when he was first announced, and he quickly became MY Doctor. During his tenure, I kept having these amazing dreams where I'd be off somewhere in the Tardis as the Doctor's companion to help him save the Universe and have all sorts of amazing adventures. It was always with Twelve, never happened before or since with any of the other Doctors. Sometimes they'd be quite scary, but I always knew it would turn out alright in the end, because the Doctor was there. :)

My favorite Doctor was Matt Smith. And the best reason why that is that I can think of is the fact that I'm American. Cuz for some reason, the show was never so popular in the U.S.A. as it was during Smith's tenure. I was aware of the show prior to his run, but it was during that time that I really got into it. By all rights,it seems like Capaldi should be my favorite Doctor, cuz he's got a lot more traits that I share and can immediately identify with than any other incarnation. And yet Smith is still the one I favor. With Tennant running an extremely close second.

I do love that you see this. You see so much that escapes others, and you know how to express it Capaldi was furiously underrated during his career, and it's because of that we enjoy the benefit if having his performance. If you have ever seen his performance as Malocolm Tucker in "The Thick of It", you can see an actor fired by fuel powerful enough to demonstrate that he is a high-performance being. I think Tucker sharpened him to a sharp serio-comedic edge. I am grateful for this gift every day.

peter capaldi IS the doctor. yes, he is the most talented storyteller who ever happened to play the doctor. the way he delivered speeches was stunning, but he was even better whenever he told a story just with his eyes, his face, his body language. yes, his doctor had this character development and mr. capaldi nailed it. yes, his outfits never felt like costumes but they suited him naturally. yes, he made the doctor alien again. he reminded us, that the doctor is not a human, but a time lord, a life form from another planet with totally different cultural and physical background. but the most important reason, why he IS the doctor is a simple one: mr. capaldi treated the whovians and the whoniverse with respect and dignity. he lived the legacy of 50 years storytelling and he knew, that he (and not the role) has to be a role model for children, juveniles and adults alike. whenever you watch his interviews you get a glimpse of the humble dignity he represented. he wouldn't have become that fantastic actor without growing up with doctor who. and he just added his own personality to this universe. thank you, peter capaldi. just thank you.

The Doctor is not human, he never mastered human emotions in the classic series and he certainly was not user friendly. I think the new fans grew used to Tennant and Smith, the romantic subplots with the companions and the simplistic morality - Capaldi (like Eccleston) was more like the Classic Doctors and his arc of being the grumpy, manipulative and morally vague Doctor (for instance the strong implication that he actively killed the Clockwork man in Deep Breath) moving through to his mentoring of Bill in his final season made for a more interesting character. Some of the writing in his time was poor, but I couldn't imagine any other actor who has played the Doctor making Heaven Sent work. Capaldi was an excellent Doctor.

not all the doctors in classic who were grumpy. some were light-hearted and funny at times, or learned to be. Two and Four were overall very light and fun. in that, smith's doctor had just as much in common with some classic doctors, and he was also morally ambiguous. also, like classic doctors, Eleven was very alien, and didn't often rely on his companions to always be saving him, but often used his older knowledge. he had the classic doctor's internal independence. He also was the first in the new who doctors to present the doctor's age in his mannerisms. I just think that people look at Eleven in the wrong way and don't fully analyze him as much as they do the others, for the sake of presenting an image of him that they want to present rather than the image that was really there. either way I like Smith and Capaldi's doctor a lot.

Heaven Sent is a perfect episode, and because it was only the doctor the whole time, it was vital to have the right actor for the job, and Capaldi pulled it off brilliantly. I also have a great appreciation for the editor of the episode thanks to the final escape scene.

The doctor always had a grasp of the moral big picture but often got morally apathetic when it came to the here and now. The 'small' details. It is the reason he keeps human companions.
