If there were two tips that REALLY helped me it was about the upper back. 1 - IF you do arch - it's the upper back NOT the lower back; this is the retraction and depression of your scapula/shoulder blades. Helps with thinking that you are "pinching your pennies" 2 - Don't think about pushing the bar away from you, but the imagery of pushing yourself into the bench. This helps with keeping the shoulders tight and back tight so that you don't lose connection with the bench, and your shoulders don't protrude forward. Add in everything Jeremy said, and I hope you guys keep healthy in the shoulders and keep making progress 💪

I find the #1 crucial: if I keep my upper back streight, it all just goes through my delts. Ah but, I can't go too arch-y, or I lose the ROM because I have short arms. It's basically as he says, one has to experiment and find their own perfect position to actually FEEL the chest. I also found going higher with the reps helps when searching. Only when you're sure you're "there", it's ok to go down to lower rep ranges to be sure the few reps you did were actually DONE by the pecs.
@definitelynot7686

@@codinghusky5196 I feel that - I'm a new lifter (2 months), and I'm not very strong, but I can bench 145 for reps cuz I got tiny lil t-rex arms lmfao. That said, I feel your pain with the delt bit - that's why I came here, because my front delts would give out before my chest. Turns out I think I'm tucking my elbows too much. Time to account even more for my lil grabbers & not tuck so much lol

Jeremy, I want to thank you tremendously. No video I've seen has explained how to do a bench press that way you explained it. I was in the Army for 21 years and never really had a well-developed chest. I noticed how my chest fibers ran and paid attention to my grip width. For years I had somewhat of a wide grip. I played around with my grip, as you said, and bam: I FOUND IT!!! I used a narrow grip with my wrist at shoulder width. I was always told to let the barbell fall between my sternum and below my nipple. I moved the barbell about 1-2 inches below my sternum. For the first time in my life, I got major muscle pump in my chest. Man, I had to go in the restroom and take off my shirt to look at it in the mirror 😄 I finally made it and it motivated me even more.. Again, Jeremy, thank you for an informative video.

I stopped doing the flat barbell bench press, replaced my main chest exercise with decline dumbbell presses, and saw my chest develop way more in a shorter amount of time. YMMV. Not saying everyone should do this, but it was definitely a favorite of mine. The set up is a pain but the angle worked really well for me! This and weighted dips while leaning my torso forward made me "feel" my chest way more. Like Jeremy said, it's a lot of trial and error to figure out what works best for you (angle of your elbows, angle of the press away from the body, figuring out your grip, etc). If you struggled with building your chest, like me, keep pushing on, my peeps!

The fact that he even says that you don't need to bench press to build your chest is refreshing. Explaining that the anatomy of the person plays a huge part on how to perform the press is so crucial and yet so very few people even think of that. He's the anti-bro science we need. He knows what he's talking about.

I have never been able to do the bench press properly. I have tried for about 2-years and made zero chest progress. I never understood, for instance, how one is supposed to squeeze (or flex) their chest muscles while doing the exercise, especially when using dumbbells (i.e. I find squeezing is quite difficult when one is focusing on getting the weight up). However, I do think I found a solution too (an idea I got from other videos on KZitem). I fastened a 10 lb resistance band to the wall on either side of my bench and then use the ankle straps that came with those resistance bands around my wrists when performing the exercise (this solution works best with dumbbells I find). This then forces me to squeeze/flex during each rep. After the first day, I had a mildly sore chest too, which to me means that I finally targeted the right muscles. I had to lower the weight considerably at first to be able to make it through 4 sets of 10 reps too...but after 7 weeks I have almost progressed to the dumbbell weight I was using before I started this new method. After the past 2 years, my chest would routinely disappear whenever I raised my arms. Not anymore. My chest has grown 1 inch in the past 7 weeks; hence, I'm finally starting to see results, although I don't know how one can know this for sure because the lats and upper back are surely growing too when doing reverse flies and chin-ups/pull-ups, and the measuring tape traverses that area too. I use this technique when doing the incline press, flat bench press, dips, and standing underhanded dumbbell flies. In about 2 more weeks my dumbbell weights are expected to be where they were before I started this technique too. It will be interesting to see where I will be in another 2 to 4 months.
