Disney's live action remakes have all been seen as pretty bad in the US too. Aladdin, Mulan, Lion King, etc were all bad.

@@峯芽苗 EXACTLY, all the racist came out with this movie. I've been saying the same thing. I'm not american but I didn't see the outrage over other live remakes which was also mediocre. The little mermaid is not good as the original but it's not as awful as they are claiming. But they had a problem with it from years ago when they learnt who was gonna be playing Ariel. And ever since they were basically praying that it does badly simply because they didn't get a generic yt princess. Lol

Fairy tales transcend cultures and races. Asians seem to go ga-ga for big eyes ( look at all the anime) and purple hair 😂 As an owner of blue eyes, red hair and white skin myself, I can tell you that brown skin, brown eyes of mixed race people are simply gorgeous. Not to mention their wonderful physique..

@方圆 I get that art can be subjective. Some people want to refresh movies or stories. Chinese People didn't like the new Mulan, and i dont like the mermaid movie for the same reasons. It does not represent Ariel as indented. The little mermaid statue in Copenhagen does not have dread logs. The director and everyone involved in this movie must expect an audience loss due to that. And draw others. Many cares, as an answer to your questien. By that logic we could make Pocahontas white, Snow White Asian, Mulan Indian ect. It is just weird.

Hans Christian also didn't portray the little mermaid how Disney 1989 version portrays it either. In the Hans Christian version. The prince never discovers that Ariel is the one who saved him and Ariel didn't end up with Eric at the end. Ariel ended up broken hearted and she turn into sea foam. There is no Sebastian, not scuttle, no flounder. So what is your point? You people really need to grow up. And COPE

Any advice for understanding native speech when sentences like “大家好我是李璨” are sometimes condensed into something that sounds like "大儿李璨" . After enough listening, will my brain just fill in the gaps? Or are there specific common phrases where this occurs that I should learn?
4:50 So true. There are so many good Cdramas these days. So many good ones that you can probably spend a lifetime watching them. Many of the new ones are as funny as Kdramas but as wholesome as Japanese animes at the same time. Once you are familiar with the style and culture as well as typical plots and characters, you may not want to watch western movies anymore.

It's hard for people to question their biases and their worldview because it makes them feel like they are bad people for believing in or liking things that may harm other people. I'm African and right now Africa, Uganda to be specific is trying to make life even more difficult for the lgbt community and so many African people are championing these inhumane laws against the lgbt despite the fact that homophobia was introduced by westerners and it was never an African value. Getting through to those people is hard and I feel helpess because there's really nothing you can do to change people's minds. This is the same way I feel about how Asian people see black people, I'm sure many progressive Asian people who live in Asia feel just as helpess because these ideas about fair skin, facial features and body types are so ingrained in Asian societies that it's almost impossible to make people see beauty in a different way. China reacted negatively to the first Black Panther movie and most espoused anti black sentiments. Posters featuring black people are always changed in China to appease the people and I'm not surprised at how the backlash against Ariel. It's disheartening and bleak that people are still like this in 2023 but I won't act like Chinese people or Koreans are evil because of that. Heck my own people are homophobic and transphobic AF like I said in the beginning and I empathize with how hard it is to let go of toxic ideolgies. I just wish we could all do better.

Honestly you have to remember in China, they all but worship Caucasian features. Many dream of a half Caucasian child and will go to great lengths for one. Let's not forget how China did other black actors such as the guy in the star wars movie. It's sad though, I've met some pretty cool Chinese people, but unfortunately, too many are racist specifically towards those that are not white. It's quite interesting though since they don't have the same mentality towards those who forced drugs like opium on their people or stole their land through conquest......

One eventually spoke broken English to me and she asked me which one of them looked cutest. One looked like the average Korean female, and the other had blonde hair and blue contact lenses and a ton of makeup. Naturally I picked the normal looking Korean girl and the other got mad. So many have that mentality not just in Korea, but Japan and China as well.

It was a brilliant movie you lot missed out and frankly that is a China and SK problem. In 1989 the portrayal of east Asians wasn't pleasant on TV so by the logic of some ignorant people is we should portray racial stereotypes of fictional characters in 2023. It's okay every society has its standards of beauty, the west is evolving from blond Caucasian trump_esk hopefully the east can also evolve from these standards.

Let’s be honest here, the film isn’t that good nor do some of the changes make sense but let’s be real, there is definitely some racism on behalf of these East Asian countries. Disney is aware of that, which is why they constantly alter movie posters, so potentially movie goers won’t be disgusted by seeing a darker person.

If I Halle is put up against Chinese actresses, I'd say she is more beautiful than some of them but not all. As there is always someone who is looks better than you. Halle has a different look from Chinese girls. So depends on what look you find more appealing. And Halle would not get to where she is without her looks. Talent alone won't get you far these days unless you have something extra. For me Halle is beautiful. She is not an average girl. She is not the most beautiful girl. But for Chinese to be calling her ugly. They need to open up their tiny eyes😂. Calling Halle's eyes small when they have the smallest eyes in the world😂
