TIWAG is planning the large-scale expansion of the existing hydropower plant in the Kaunertal valley (Gepatsch reservoir). In the process, the Platzertal valley is to be dammed to form a reservoir for the operation of a pumped storage power plant. In addition, four torrents in the Ötztal - including Venter Ache and Gurgler Ache - would be diverted through water catchments and fed underground into the Gepatsch reservoir.
However, due to the massive, irreversible and extensive negative impacts on the alpine landscape, biodiversity, alpine habitats and the water balance, this project is not an example of a nature-compatible energy transition.
