I had a 1980 Honda 750 Custom. Before buying it I looked at Harleys, Kawasaki’s and Suzukis. All were pretty fast bikes, with the exception of the Harleys. When I asked the Harley dealer about this, he responded about the ambiance of the bike and the noise. So I bought the Honda, it was about $600 or so cheaper than the base Harley at the time. I drove it for 3 years with a Vetter fairing with lowers and an extended windshield. I did 15,000 miles in 3 years in the Chicago area. I loved that bike and it was comfortable to ride and listen to my radio (in the fairing), because it was quite, no muffler noise. Unfortunately I was hit by a large pickup truck, making a right turn coming into my lane and hitting me. I survived with leg and hand damage. The only thing I could have done to avoid this accident was not to be there. So here it is 40 years later and I haven’t been on a bike since. I was at a Harley dealer a few years ago and I was kinda shocked on how outdated some of the Harleys were when compared to my 1980 Honda, even 40 years later……? When LED vehicle lighting first came out I went ape-shit on my 1985 Yamaha XV1000. I got the white face gauges and replaced the three tiny incandescent bulbs with green, yellow, and violet corresponding to the zones on the tach and speedometer. Then I added super bright DRLs and super bright color change from red to amber rear turn signals, color change from clear to amber front turn signals, and brighter brake lights that augmented the rear turn signal pods with red when not being used for the turn signal circuit. I did all that because the output of the old electrical system on that model was limited and I wanted more visibility with less power draw and the LEDs used less current. It was cool at first, but once almost every new bike started using LEDs, it lost its novelty and became boring.

I have worked for HD for over twenty five years and you are correct. HD is not going to throw away anything if they can. They will usually find away! But it is good Business.

It took HD forever just to give them dual filiment bulbs for both running lights and turn signals. My '84 FLH only has turn signals front and rear and my '98 FXDWG has both up front but only turn signals on the rear. I guess that little bit of extra wire and a 1157 bulb was just too much of a expense for HD to justify. SMH!!

I am sure there are multiple reasons why HD does that. I assume they primarily do it in hopes you do upgrade them at the same time spending more money at HD.

I like my incandescent turn signals on my 21. I m not sure why everyone makes such a big deal about it. I switched bikes on a cruise with my brother . I can see my turn signals clearly.

You nailed it! Theyre usin up their parts- where on thr OTHER HAND, you can buy a $6000 new Kawasaki that has full led all the way around, ABS, and full digital display.

You just learned what's important in manufacturing. Reducing waste in inventory. They're not going to trash an OEM part just for the sake of improvements.

My 2022 street bob came with incandescent bulbs. Custom dynamics fixed that nice and quick. The reason they put junk lights on the bikes is so that they can sell you leds.

Harley Boss said cut cost of building with old parts make customers pay more for them. So Boss can give himself a big multi million dollar pay rise.

They don’t want to put LED lights on the new bikes because they want you to buy them ,30 grand bike isn’t enough but extra 100 for LED lights are HD stands for hundred dollars

I doubt Harley has a massive stockpile of these only because it would be really expensive to store them. Harley sells bikes with incandescent lights to give you something to order at the dealer. Same reason they don't ship with 131 cubic inch motors. They'd rather sell it to you after you buy the bike.

I like the regular bulbs myself plus they look way cooler with a blue dot 🔵

Harley Davidson engineers move at the speed of a glacier. Give them another 100 years and they'll get those LEDs in the back.

Single rotor up front for 800lb bike, leaky bags, and a 28 deg lean angle on one side and a 27 deg lean on the other, and a single rear shock thats basically a potato.

5 dollar incandescent vs 500 dollar LED? No brainer .

Because Harley really is big on the catalog customs. You know where they sell a bike to summon tool box and then show him the catalog that he can order the "custom parts"that fit his bike perfectly so he never has to worry about anything and you can try and make himself think that he's got a personalized bike and he's riding a chopper. When really he has the exact same bike as thousands of people. People should really remember if you would never actually cut and welded on the bike it's not a chopper.

It's so you can pay more for the upgrade... shouldn't be too hard to figure out after they charged you $1K for the Daymaker package up front...

Blinker, that is why. Blinkers require a "load" to flash. LEDs don't draw enough amperage, full LEDs require a solid state "Module". Modules cost about 10usd, blinker costs 1$

You are correct. They use up existing inventory of parts when building m/c’s. Friend of mine had a breakdown on a trip think it was a stator or regulator & dealer had to order the part b/c his was a part from year before which he did not have.
