Very thorough and very fine assessment of the M10. You reveal very important, even minute details I heard nowhere else, and you also address Leica company's own idiosyncrasies and decision making process. This is very unique review, thank you.

Since it's so hard for people to understand why people buy leicas: User experience, simplicity, massive lens selection, small 1.4 lenses, small body, full frame ( i love fuji but there IS a difference in the way the sensors/lenses render an image.) the look, build quality etc. Being inspired to shoot by your camera is a very valuable thing. If you're happy with your fuji, sony, canon, nikon then thats fucking great! keep shooting, but just because something isn't up to your preferences does not make it a bad product. It's like buying a classic car, it runs slower, doesn't accelerate as fast, doesn't have aircon etc, but the experience is still so fun. Focus less on what others shoot on and just enjoy shooting.

A Leica M is unique, undeniably. But a XPro2 is unique to. A GH5 also. A GFX 50 R to. Etc.... So what ?? I used to have a M6 and a M240. Leica M9 and Leica M10 are very similar. It's almost that once you got an M10, you discover how cool the Leica M9 is. I am lucky that I got the Leica M9 when it came out, and then the next M240, then the M240 so I got to experience them all from new. So traveling the route of M9 and get an M10 or M11 later is not a bad idea.

I would usually go finding smaller Leica dealers that doesn't have long waiting lists, and who offer personal service. Red Dot Cameras in UK, Leica Store Nuremberg in Germany, and so on. I really like the 90/2 APO for the details and soft look, very bright colors and all. The 75/2 is sort of a lens people seem to have forgotten. It's the "long version" of the very good 50/1.4 ASPH, and it's compact.

I have a Leica M10 and the 50mm Noctilux f/0.95. Shooting with the Noctilux at f/0.95 it should be easy - because it has such a thin depth-of-field - to isolate individual people in a crowd. The problem I've had is not with the Noctilux but with the M10's rangefinder focusing. If people are standing close together I've found that it's very difficult to find a particular person's nose or forehead or ear to focus on. There can be too many noses or foreheads or ears in your line of sight. If you're aware of this difficulty with rangefinder cameras like the M10, I'd be grateful if you'd suggest a solution.

Does Leica plan to add color filter effect for Mono shoot mode in M10 like in 240?
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard

I don't think so. They skipped the "digital color filters" in the M10 that they introduced in the M240. Likely a M10 Monochrom is in the horizon, a year or two out, I would guess. I still pray they will make a M10 Mono with ISO dial on the back - I would get one immediately; and god knows I don't need it. But that would be irresistible. If they made it in green, I would buy two.

Start with a 35mm or 50mm - whichever is most you. Then next question is if it has to be f/1.4 or f/2.0 (or f/0.95 or f/2.8) and that is also a matter of price. Most tend to end up with light-strong versions like the f/1.4, so if one already know one want that ... often better to go straight to that than try to economize with an f/2.0 that will anyways be exchanged later :-)

@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard

On lens recommendation, I usually say this: 1) Most people will use one lens for 95% of what they do. There are many nice lenses, and you want more than one (and that is fine), even you could do with just one. For Leica people tend to get 2-3 lenses as their "kit" whereas a dSLR often invites to get as much of the range from 8mm to 800mm. (You see that photo in the Nikon brochure of all the lenses on a table and you automatically dream of having them all!) 2) Most people will use a 50mm or 35mm as their standard lens. Few choose 28mm or 75mm or something else than 35mm/50mm. So first thing is to decide if you are 35mm or 50mm. 3) Next thing is to decide if you can do with a f/2.0 lens; and they are all excellent and enough. As Leica users tend to be people who dream of the most excellent, the idea of NOT getting the most exotic and excellent consructed lens, the f/1.4 (or 0.95 Noctilux) make them sleepless. So if you consider a f/2.0 lens for economy, but really dream of the f/1.4, you'll stay sleepless til you actually get the one you dreamt of. Having said that, the 50mm Rigid from 1970's you can get for $600-$1000 and it is excellent. In many ways it is comparable with the $7,000 APO-Summicron 50mm. The 35mm ASPH f/2.0 is a GREAT lens, compact too. The 35mm f/1.4 FLE ASPH is a masterpiece ($4,000), and so is the 50mm Summicron ASPH ($4,500). 4) Some times people consider economizing ont he lens and get another brand as their starter lens. I consider the lens the most important, so I would rather go with any cheap second-hand Leica lens than a new other brand.

Hi, first I love your reviews, I was wondering what about printing? How do Leica’s cameras perform for large prints? Also I’ve never had a Leica before, I am hesitant between the Leica Q and the Leica M10 (which I fell in love with as soon as I hold it in my hand), if u equipped the M10 with that 28mm would both camera deliver the same quality? Thank you
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
6 жыл бұрын
In large prints the quality of micro details should be quite visible. Quality meaning that the details are captured solely with excellence of optics and not manipulated digitally. My experience is that the 28/1.7 on the Leica Q and the 28/1.4 on the Leica M perform almost similar. The reason the 28/1.4 cost more than the whole Leica Q with lens is that it's pure optics with no shortcuts, whereas the Leica Q is 1) mass produced and not hand-assembled, and 2) is a compact lens with a digital profile that correct mainly the corners and straighten out the picture. In theory the Q should have less details in the corners, but it's actually hard to see in real life. For me, the main difference between the Leica Q and the 28/1.4 is the feeling of using the equipment. For that reason I prefer the 28/1.4 on a Leica M because it feels more like creating a picture. I can laugh at myself and I can look at the images and see they perform similar; but I will still pick the Leica M with the 28/1.4 any day for that feeling.

Waait a minute! I want to get into (digital) Leica! I have an analog M4-P and watched your videos. I can't afford a M10 and comparing a M240 and a M9 you go recommend a M9- But why? Does it makes a difference, that I do Streetphotopgraphy!? - M240 seems to be better, getting into Leica! Here are the reasons why! It is heavier, a little bit bigger and feels sturdier. It has a LiveView, making it easier to focus and get the picture in hard situations. - It has LED-Light, where the M9 needs a third window...What about lowlight-situations?! The M240 can be equipped with an IVF, making it easier to focus, especially in lowlight-situations and with wide-angle-lenses. - Taking about ergonomics, the M240 has worse noobs and no cursor. Is that a pity?! And the ISO-Performance ism´t so good! But over all! don't you have to consider, what is your style of photography before you buy a Leica M?!

M9, M240 and M10 are very similar. The M9 is the 'original' and now considered the classic. It'c a very loveable and cute camera, so people hold onto them and/or buy them again. So the price goes up. It's a camera that make sense. The M240 is faster and better, but doesn't have the same history and charm. Price doesn't really move, it cost less than the older and slower M9. Just a fact. M10 is where we're at now. Fast, good image quality, precision, smaller body and all. In many ways the one that makes the most sense to use. But Leica folks just can't let go of classics and history. Practically speaking, any of them will do the job. It's just a feeling, and a matter of being able to work with what you got without constantly dreaming of one of the other models :-)

One negative thing about M cameras here in NZ, there are no facilities to have your camera cleaned and calibrated so it needs to be sent all the way to Germany. So a real pain I wouldn’t want to be bothered with. That’s a real pity with such a beautiful camera. Apart from the beautiful q2 the other option would be an SL2 but that’s a bit big for me.

Thor, you mentioned that you'd never use the auto ISO setting. Is there something technically inferior about the setting? I've been experimenting with the auto ISO using max exposure time setting of 1/(2 x focal), and for handheld use it's done a good job of blur free images (unless of course I'm purposely looking to blur an element). Thanks for the excellent comparison.

I want simplicity and control. So I have the aperture set manually (to wide open), and I set ISO to "outdoor ISO 200" or "Night 3200 ISO". Either one. Then the only thing that I have to control is shutter speed. With Auto ISO, you introduce a roulette of ISO and shutter time that you cannot control as easy.

Leica needs to let go of the past and fully redesign the M camera. Yes, the M design was perfect for analog shooting, but its nowhere near as convenient as today's digital cameras. I would say that this camera is really only for mega camera nerds. The only purpose of having it is because you want to shoot with a Leica. It becomes more about the camera than the actual photos you take. You could buy a sony ar7iii and travel to a place you've always wanted to photograph with the left over money you saved by not buying the M10. There are just so many things weighing this camera down aside from its physical weight lol. If you must have a Leica, get an M6, because in 10 years it will go up in value, wheres as the technology in the M10 will be obsolete in no time. (Hope this helped with any indecision you've had as to whether or not you should get an M10).
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard

They sort of redesigned it all, and it is the Leica TL2, and the Leica SL, and to some degree the Leica Q. So the M stays the same for those who like the past and the classic things. With iPhone, iPad and Kindle, paper still exists. That's fine with me.

Alright, let's just list a couple of cameras here: Sony A7R2, Sony A9, Nikon D850, Fuji XT2, Fuji GFX. With these amazing cameras on the market, how does it make ANY sense whatsoever to buy this Leica for that kind of money (from a completely rational standpoint, please let's not get into that ''Leica unique experience'' thing)?

Just like anything, people have their own reasons for everything in life. It's not like someone is shoving this camera down your throat. If you don't want it, then don't buy it. Perhaps, it'd help if you'd stop worrying about what other people spend their money on... I own Nikon cameras and I'm interested in Leica. It's because I like the manual (rangefinder) focus, size of M's, build quality, sensor quality. Same reasons anyone picks any other camera. Chances are, you're not a photographer who would benefit from any of those cameras listed as well. A majority of people can get by with far far less than Fx sensors. Yet, we all still enjoy/use "professional" level gear.

As you heard from the video they have waiting time for this camera... it's sold out, so they could bump a price even higher and it would still sell. Why would they sell their cameras at 2000$ if they can't produce that much ? I don't think their fans would like to see "made in china" on their cameras. Some people like real rangefinders, some like that rad badge... who cares why did they buy it? btw. I'm too poor for a Leica so I have next best thing... Fuji :P

Extremely over priced camera with no technological advances especially from one model to the next. Buying this camera is like buying an old Bmw but the transmission is manual, the windows are manual, no navigation, no abs, no fuel injection and only has 150 horse power. If you want something good and old school buy Fujifilm.Pay more for less 🤔

But don't presume to tell others what they should or should not do when they haven't even asked you... BTW, have you had the opportunity to shoot with the Leica?

The reason I came on here to check this video out was that today I was able to look at the pictures taken by the M10 by a friend. I was totally blown away by the pictures he was able to take with the camera. The price is really steep but I guess if it is able to take amazing pictures, its worth it. Of course for those who can afford it.

I recently purchased a Rolex GMT II. I could have have bought a $49.00 Timex that has better luminescence & doesn't require it to be wound every day if it's off my wrist, and is just as accurate as my Rolex, but I chose to purchase a watch that I consider to be a classic and a possible family heirloom that I will pass onto my grandchildren. Same goes for a Leica. Overpriced? Perhaps. Technological superiority over a Sony camera? No way?? But it's a classic that means a lot to me, and I can pass on to a future generation.

Overall this guy is just a businessman that knows some techniques and sells courses and webinars for half a grand. U can't learn being a good photographer, it's not a trick dear people. It's something U need to achieve yourself. If u really want to be good at story telling in photographs U will pick up a cheap camera yourself and start experimenting and ask for feedback to real artist that fight for a dime. This guy is all about the money and his pictures tell that. There's no emotion or connection to the subject. Most of the pictures are really forced and so hyperrealistic that there is almost no room for own interpretation, somethingthat's essential in (fine) art, which he claims to be in. Do yourself a pleasure and look for the answer elsewhere and start with yourself!

Silver, definitely. Or black, perhaps. Or maybe M10-P ... Silver, Black or Safari. ;-) (I've had all of them, M10 silver and black, M10-P silver and black, and the current I use is the M10-P Safari. That's how indecisive I've been on it).

i have all the fuji x100 series from the original - x100f. Last month I got a good deal on an 11 year old, 10mp Leica M8 for under $1000, just for fun and see how it goes. Now I'm selling all my Fuji and sony gears (except for my x70 because they're pocketable). The colour you can get with the sensor is sooo much better (and somehow "film" like). I can't explain why seriously. And this is the only digital camera that makes me sorta forget about my M6... Now i want an M9 for more pixels..

Hello Thorsten, great review as always! I noticed you said the Black & white files of the M10 look a bit flat. This is very interesting: i was hoping to get the same "flatness" than the M9 Monochrom straight RAW files (with color sat to zero) and after many tests i realized that is exactly what i get. The same very workable RAW files than my beloved Monochrom M9 but half a stop brighter to my eyes. Is it something that you would say is correct? Those of the M240 were already very contrasty and did not have the magic of Monochrom 1 unless tweaked a little bit innosot processing.
