The 2005 picture is the Interstate 10 bridge between New Orleans East and Slidell. The Causeway was not destroyed; just slightly damaged compared to the I-10 bridge which at this point has been completely replaced by one tall enough to not be damaged by wave action. The Causeway is the longest continuous overwater bridge in the world. It was NOT destroyed. It didn’t lose one single section. Just 12 days after Katrina I and a team of 50 vehicles drove across it to Metairie to enter New Orleans. And we returned on the other span. The bridge which was destroyed and since rebuilt better was the Twin Spans of I-10, which is only roughly 7 miles long, and on the east end of Lake Pontchartrain. I drove the Causeway for 22 years of commuting until 2020. That’s enough for me.
@Jo-qe8ks

@@NOLAgenX Pictures are also be mixed up between the I-10 "twin span" and the Causeway. The original causeway was one span (one bridge with one lane north and one lane south with no shoulder. The second span was built after so now each span could be dedicated to only north or only south.

The north end of the southbound bridge was washed out from erosion. My company has equipment at the drawbridge and old turnaround. We got out there 3 days after the storm. All four ramps to the old turnaround were completely washed away. The causeway is higher than the old Twin Span bridge and farther from the eye of Katrina. I seem to recall that the Causeway is about 15’ above the water and the Tein Span was only about 8’.

Interesting insight on a bridge I cross almost daily. My only comments is that a lot of photos used are of the I10 Twin Spand and not the Causeway. Also, the south of the bridge is in Metairie. The causeway actually has its own police and first responders as it is so long. The worst I have experienced on it was during the new rail construction. They took the railings off and it was just the road and the water. Nerve wracking!

@@nicolem621 I suspect they used temporary concrete barrier walls which can be bolted to the bridge deck.They probably reduced traffic to one lane. I never had a reason to cross the bridge during that construction, so I don't know firsthand. But I am a professional civil engineer specializing in temporary traffic control during construction. I think the work the OP is describing is the addition of emergency shoulders that were added to both spans in six locations. Each is probably 1000 feet long. But they were onlt added to one side, So thete was never a time that there were no railings at all. It probably took a few months to build each emergency lane, but they probably were working on them all at once, overall, it must have taken less than a year.

The name of this video and its thumbnail are misleading. You are dating one part of the thumbnail to 2005 and showing an image of the I-10 Twinspan further east in the Rigolets--which sustained massive damage was was entirely replaced. I live in Louisiana and was here for Katrina, and I do not recall the Causeway as being so damaged that it was "demolished" as you say in the name of this video. I believe there was some damage to a turn-around on the older span--but that didn't hinder the movement of southbound traffic.

Being a former resident of the Southeast Louisiana region, I've used this bridge many a times. Have known of incidents of drivers going over it's side. High winds are of largest concern. Surprised this person missed that. Yes fog matters, however, high winds is a major concern. Especially for motorcycles. Also, the southern entrance is in the city of Metairie. Locals pronounce as "MET-ter-ree" not the monstrosity pronounce in this video. SMH

It never occurred to me that anybody could be scared. I drove across and thought it was cool. Nothing to be scared about. Identical to driving on any other street.

Identical? Which other streets have had boat collisions?

The only thing that scares drives crossing the bridge is the causeway police.

I can understand that one. All cop cars should have a big, pink nose painted on the hood and all doors so everyone knows they are driven by police. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Minority view here - terrifying to even think about! Glad most others don’t feel that way, but bridges scare me. The one to Taos moves.

I have driven the causeway. Mainly you want to have a good vehicle and a strong bladder. It is NOT even on my list of scary dangerous bridges. I 10 Port Arthur, Apalacea bridge, Macanaw Bridge, One I dont remember the name of...in Missouri...totally terrifying.
