I switched to the Apple ecosystem because of the Iphone 13 mini. Great device and in my opinion the perfect size for a phone. Smartphones nowadays are just too big for my liking. I love this form factor and I would like Apple to release a mini Iphone every 3-4 years or so. I get that it is pointless to launch a mini Iphone every year when the sales are low, but every 3-4 years so the mini lovers always have a perfect device for them to buy would be amazing. The iPhone 13 Mini is the greatest phone I’ve ever owned. It’s amazing, super light, and uber powerful. I love being able to run around the backyard with my new puppy while recording 4k 60fps video without feeling like I’m holding a brick in my hand. Even if the Mini was $200 more, I’d still get it. That’s how much I love it. I think that Apple will bring the Mini back but not call it the “Mini”. They’ll use a different name. I’m still hoping for a iPhone Mini Pro. :)

Also filming video while skateboarding and bicycling is made easy with the mini 13 because I can securely hold onto the entire phone with my entire hand while jumping around and going in motion. Back in the iphone 5 and under era, people treated their phones like dumbphones with extra benefits. (That 3.6" display worked totally fine if all you're doing with it is making calls, texting, quickly firing off an email response, or looking at nearby yelp recommendations.) Nowadays we treat them more like a multimedia center or even a laptop replacement. And for that, screen real estate is a far greater priority than ease of portability. So just like that, effortless pocketability just went by the wayside. (I still remember thinking the Note was absurd when it first debuted. But looking back on the actual specs of that device now, apparently the first couple generations of the Note only had a 5.3" display. The physical size is on-par with that of most baseline phone models sold nowadays. 😅)

The Mini ended up in an interesting place over time. I use my phone very little by today's standards. I don't do social media, don't watch videos, don't play games, take very few photos and my screen on time average for a day is about 40 mins. I basically use my phone as a modern day pager to let me know to go find a larger device to reply to something, haha. When it came time to get a new phone to replace my XR, I considered the SE. But the SE has gone up in price over time and the 128GB model is $480. Meanwhile, the 13 Mini got a price drop thanks to the 14 series arrival making the 128GB 13 Mini $630 unlocked. Even though the SE would be more than enough phone for my usage, for that $150 difference I went with the Mini just for the better battery and form factor alone. I really think they just priced the Mini too high at release, and as you pointed out, put it too close to the regular iPhone model and too far away from the SE. Now that it kind of sits right in the middle, it feels more appropriately priced. I'm curious if sales have actually gone up since it got the price cut. It would be nice if historical sales ended up showing it wasn't a complete failure after all, perhaps it just needed a price drop and time.

Around iPhone 11 time I switched to android because I was annoyed with the fact that I could not get a small phone (not much good options in the Android world either, but at least it was cheaper). But when the 12 Mini came out I bought it few days after release. It was perfect for me. Battery was enough for a day of my use (one of the reasons I like the mini is that I use my laptop for almost everything - youtube, instagram, whatsapp, etc.) but I still need a phone for getting notifications and answering short texts (most of the time I actually take out my laptop to answer texts, but I'll read them on my phone). Couple of weeks ago I got the 13 mini. The 12 was still more than enough for me, but it started to need a battery service and I knew this might be my last chance to get a new "mini" iPhone. One thing I noticed is that all the physical stores hardly ever had the mini on display and they would not advertise it much online either. I think that dealers were playing a role in this as well.

Poor marketing. They should have had mini iPhones for both the regular and pro models and marketed them 1) as fashion accessories and 2) as space saving options for business people. They did neither and the phone only appealed to the small niche of “small phone fans”…and I love my 13 mini I’m one of those people, but I knew they wouldn’t sell well. They didn’t offer the colors needed to make it a “cute fashion accessory” (they needed a hot pink, gold, lime green, etc. color options exclusive to the mini) and they didn’t offer a pro model that would have appealed to the high spending business crowd.

Small + Battery Life don't usually go together. That said I think you really were probably looking for a Mini Pro or something. That said I know everyone uses their phone differently but the 12 Mini easily lasts throughout the entire day for me even just two years later. Plus it doesn't even really matter much to me cause I got a 26000 mAh battery bank by Anker which is pretty easy to bring anyway in my bag for those longer trips where you know you'll be on your phone a lot. I also upgraded from the iPhone 7 and damn that thing actually had atrocious battery life lol. Couldn't even get like 4-5 hours out of it or something and the standby drain was also much higher. Not to mention the thing would only intermittently charge. You had to get like the perfect angle just to charge the thing. When I got my 12 Mini I was shocked by how long it lasts for basically the same sized phone. The new chips in iPhones are vastly more efficient and battery tech has improved. It's amazing that they were even able to improve it further on the 13 Mini to begin with. So yeah idk I'm like also kinda shocked by how people are saying the battery life is bad. I mean I don't use my phone much for anything else but watching some KZitem videos, Reddit, casual web searching, and texting but the battery has been amazing for me lol. Easily the best battery life I've ever had in a smartphone and still is. Probably the next best was my iPhone 5C and LG V20 but those don't even come close to the 12 Mini.. Overall though, best decision for me to "downgrade" from my LG to that 5C lol. Apple is way more efficient in pretty much everything on their phones it seems. Plus I found the benefits of switching to a smaller phone much easier on my hands. Actually wish that size came back.. I've got small hands and even the Mini is still a tad too big. Can't text as easily with one hand like I could with the 5C.

Some really good points here! I had forgotten about the timing for the SE2 but I remember it being pretty tempting before the 12 Mini was announced. Part of me does wonder if this was truly a failure, or if Apple just felt it had reached market saturation. Even at 5%, roughly 24 million in sales over those two years doesn't seem insignificant, but I have no clue if that covers R&D for a device like this. There is obviously the additional potential of bringing a customer into the ecosystem that otherwise might have moved to Android or stayed on an older less compatible phone, where Apple can make money off adjacent products and service, but again... no clue how much value that represents for Apple. As a current 13 mini owner I'm hopeful that we'll see a similar device in the next 3-4 years, but to your point a lot could change in that time. There is definitely much more demand for larger screens at the moment and that seems unlikely to change, but I think there may be enough motivated buyers to justify a device like this from time to time. Especially given how long people tend to keep their phones these days.

😊😊I have an IPhone 6SE that I can easily carry around for calls, CarPlay for mapping, and texts. . . My IPad has an external keyboard, a bigger screen and lots of apps.

I wanted a 12 Mini Pro. Apple never made it. I was forced to get a 12 Pro Max which had the best camera in that range.

I bought the 13 Mini over the 14 line this year, I haven’t found a problem with it as I use my phone just as a phone and not my main media device.

The smooth and clean text with the clacky old typewriter sound effect for the title screens is an odd choice, but thx for the video

i was struggling so much with writing long form on my huawei P30 because of the size that i got an iphone 8 as a second phone and it has been amazing. my writing has increased and i’m more productive on the iphone because there are so few distractions on iphone (ironically it’s because of their many restrictions on open source apps! the very thing android users complain about!)

I have a iphone 13, first iphone ever. IMO the 13 is the perfect size, no need for the mini, and certainly no need for a plus. Now i just wish they would get rid of the camera bump ( but they want you to break the camera first)

Only reason this failed was price. It's the best form factor they got imo. That's a phone. Not a phablet, not a tablet, just a phone .

What really killed the mini was the price. Psychologically, if it is smaller you expect it to cost less, not the insignificant difference of 100 dollars from the next size up.

The funny reality is is still available on Apple Store. I have the 12 mini and it’s every bit as good as any other. Sure the camera isn’t as good as the pro models but let’s face it. It’s a phone not a DSLR. But it’s still a great camera , in fact when you know how to adjust settings it’s really capable! And the chipset on 13 mini is only seconds faster. No big deal! I have no issues with battery! I’ve had for two years and battery is still at 100% capacity

I loved the 12 mini but the battery life definitely killed it for me. It got to about 86% battery health (it had 90% when I bought it used) and I couldn't even get through the full work day with it if I was listening to music or audiobooks.

I always get a laugh…or few, when I see someone walking down the street eating, drinking or doing something with one hand, and with the other hand trying to navigate through the screen of a phone that’s CLEARLY way too damn big and how clumsy and awkward they look shifting the phone around in their hand for the thumb to reach the part of the screen they need! Even with screen drop feature, the hand isn’t naturally designed to navigate such a large screen, also one would think Apple would use a lighter material for the larger iPhones but nope they’re also heavier which is also hard on the wrists…but hey, what do I know right…lol!

It's too easy to spend just another $100 and get a bigger device. The price differential isn't attractive enough. Apple should drop the mini and focus on improving the SE.

It didn't sell well because of the missing 70 mm camera and a bad battery life. All the other things are meaningless to discuss.

I’ll probably continue with the SE once my 13 mini gives out but now rumors are that the next SE will be bigger than the mini 🙄 So now I have my 13 mini, bought a new SE as a backup and will probably buy another 2 13 minis to have as backups. After getting the mini I can never go back to using a tablet as a phone, it’s beyond stupid.

Honestly I think it only failed cuz of the price point. I personally wish they made the mini size more identical to the iPhone X. The mini seems to resemble the iPhone 5 size. Which ofc is not always appealing for 699. If it was 499 I would of reccomend it.

I bought the 13 mini sometime last year after I got my first real paycheck. 6 months later, my dad decided to buy me a 14 pro, on the condition that I relinquish my 13 mini to my brother. The 14 pro is of course better, but it’s also clumsier to use. I still kinda miss the ergonomics of 13 mini…..
