My God, but what will happen to the Donkeys if Humanity decides to throw them out of work? Carrying loads is not ABUSE to a donkey. Carrying Loads for Humans has been an Evolutionary Strategy that the Donkeys put to work for them. Donkeys are a very successful species. Like Dogs, Cats, and Horses, it is a truth that Donkeys became Symbiotically Linked to the Human Species. In a real sense Humanity is integrally related to dogs, cats, horses and donkeys. Without them we could argue that Human Civilization would not have been possible (especially cats as in regards to their being able to protect our surplus grain supplies from parasitic vermin and rodents). But here in this video we get the explicit message that Civilization in mountainous Greece would have been impossible without our 'Brothers' the Donkeys. Besides, is it Moral to put Human Beings to work while letting Donkeys go idle? Yes, after the Revolution when Men are finally free and not exploited for their labor, then I HOPE we can value Donkeys exclusively for their company and treat them as pets. But even then, after all these Centuries, do you think a donkey would resent doing what it evolved to do, that is, to give rides. Hmmmm, I suppose that is not a safe argument, since it could also be argued that over the last 4 or 5 thousand years Human Beings have evolved to also to be Slaves and to enjoy carrying the loads of others, our Betters.

Shocked, disturbed, ashamed, sad, sorrowful...... this is how I feel after watching this ... No animal, no living creature deserves to be treated like this, like a soulless tool, like a piece of equipment, existing only to serve our needs . Our needs, which in the 21st century can easily be served with the use of technology. For those who might not kow it, there is a working funicular in Santorini , but Alas! getting a selfie inside the cabin of a funicular is not the same as getting a selfie on the back of a poor creature.... much more pictoresque and exotic! The donkeys and the mules are abused, plain and simple! There are laws protecting them, but no one is in a hurry to implement these laws, as there is profit to be made out of the backs (if not out of the corpses) of these poor creatures. PLease! I urge those of you who visit Santorini not to use them! And I ask of you all to put pressure on the Greek authorities so that they stop turning a blind eye on this attrocity! Thank you dear people who made this video: it is very poetic, but also very strong, and I believe it conveys the pain of these animals very clearly!

Donkeys and mules are the most abused of all equines. There are no easy answers for theses wonderful animals. If the tourists don’t pay to ride, then they will be starved, or butchered for their meat and skin. But the way they are treated as a tourist attraction is abhorrent. It would be wonderful if they could be retired to a safe haven but who will pay for them. No easy answers.

Actually, after all the attention, the local authorities made a "retired home" for the old ones. They left them there for the tourists to see and go "aww" for one summer, and then after the tourist season ended, they let them starve! Only the local charity helps them, they take in all the retired ones, and they have help from NO ONE, in fact, the local authorities kicked them out of the old shelter, because illegal houses were built around it. That's the Greek reality.

What I don't understand, is why their owners don't give them food and especially water during the whole day, while they wait for those tourists to take rides? Would they treat them decently, the owners might still be able to make money by offering those rides, without the donkeys having to suffer so much. Also, where they wait, they should have put up a temporary shade as a roof over them, so as to be protected from the sun. It will still be hot, while they are on their way, but at least while standing around waiting, they wouldn't have to suffer.

They are one of the most loving creatures you could ever be blessed with to meet. Like humans, they develop friendships with other donkeys. Tourists should complain to the muleteers about the lack of shelter, food and water for the animals, then bring them some, and if the muleteers don't like it, tough. Some education is needed here. All things are possible with love and respect, take them out of the equation and it becomes hell. This is true in any relationship. Tourists should go to Santorini (and any other place abusing animals) and complain. If a muleteer asked me to ride a donkey I would say "when he's been fed, watered and rested in the shade" and I'd wait till that happened. Don't settle for anything less. If all the tourists did that... Also the donkeys working on buildings need tourists to complain and take food and water to them.

Isaiah 5 9The Lord Almighty has declared in my hearing: “Surely the great houses will become desolate, the fine mansions left without occupants. 10A ten-acre vineyard will produce only a bath a of wine; a homer b of seed will yield only an ephah c of grain.” 11Woe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their drinks, who stay up late at night till they are inflamed with wine. 12They have harps and lyres at their banquets, pipes and timbrels and wine, but they have no regard for the deeds of the Lord, no respect for the work of his hands. 13Therefore my people will go into exile for lack of understanding; those of high rank will die of hunger and the common people will be parched with thirst. 14Therefore Death expands its jaws, opening wide its mouth; into it will descend their nobles and masses with all their brawlers and revelers. 15So people will be brought low and everyone humbled, the eyes of the arrogant humbled. 16But the Lord Almighty will be exalted by his justice, and the holy God will be proved holy by his righteous acts. 17Then sheep will graze as in their own pasture; lambs will feed d among the ruins of the rich. 18Woe to those who draw sin along with cords of deceit, and wickedness as with cart ropes, 19to those who say, “Let God hurry; let him hasten his work so we may see it. The plan of the Holy One of Israel- let it approach, let it come into view, so we may know it.” 20Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. 21Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight. 22Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks, 23who acquit the guilty for a bribe, but deny justice to the innocent. 24Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel. 25Therefore the Lord’s anger burns against his people; his hand is raised and he strikes them down. The mountains shake, and the dead bodies are like refuse in the streets. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised. 26He lifts up a banner for the distant nations, he whistles for those at the ends of the earth. Here they come, swiftly and speedily! 27Not one of them grows tired or stumbles, not one slumbers or sleeps; not a belt is loosened at the waist, not a sandal strap is broken. 28Their arrows are sharp, all their bows are strung; their horses’ hooves seem like flint, their chariot wheels like a whirlwind. 29Their roar is like that of the lion, they roar like young lions; they growl as they seize their prey and carry it off with no one to rescue. 30In that day they will roar over it like the roaring of the sea. And if one looks at the land, there is only darkness and distress; even the sun will be darkened by clouds. Job 36 1Elihu continued: 2“Bear with me a little longer and I will show you that there is more to be said in God’s behalf. 3I get my knowledge from afar; I will ascribe justice to my Maker. 4Be assured that my words are not false; one who has perfect knowledge is with you. 5“God is mighty, but despises no one; he is mighty, and firm in his purpose. 6He does not keep the wicked alive but gives the afflicted their rights. 7He does not take his eyes off the righteous; he enthrones them with kings and exalts them forever. 8But if people are bound in chains, held fast by cords of affliction, 9he tells them what they have done- that they have sinned arrogantly. 10He makes them listen to correction and commands them to repent of their evil. 11If they obey and serve him, they will spend the rest of their days in prosperity and their years in contentment. 12But if they do not listen, they will perish by the sword a and die without knowledge. 13“The godless in heart harbor resentment; even when he fetters them, they do not cry for help. 14They die in their youth, among male prostitutes of the shrines. 15But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering; he speaks to them in their affliction. 16“He is wooing you from the jaws of distress to a spacious place free from restriction, to the comfort of your table laden with choice food. 17But now you are laden with the judgment due the wicked; judgment and justice have taken hold of you. 18Be careful that no one entices you by riches; do not let a large bribe turn you aside. 19Would your wealth or even all your mighty efforts sustain you so you would not be in distress? 20Do not long for the night, to drag people away from their homes. b 21Beware of turning to evil, which you seem to prefer to affliction. 22“God is exalted in his power. Who is a teacher like him? 23Who has prescribed his ways for him, or said to him, ‘You have done wrong’? 24Remember to extol his work, which people have praised in song. 25All humanity has seen it; mortals gaze on it from afar. 26How great is God-beyond our understanding! The number of his years is past finding out. 27“He draws up the drops of water, which distill as rain to the streams c ; 28the clouds pour down their moisture and abundant showers fall on mankind. 29Who can understand how he spreads out the clouds, how he thunders from his pavilion? 30See how he scatters his lightning about him, bathing the depths of the sea. 31This is the way he governs d the nations and provides food in abundance. 32He fills his hands with lightning and commands it to strike its mark. 33His thunder announces the coming storm; even the cattle make known its approach. e

My childhood. From a donkey I learned to respect "working animal" - once, as very small kid, I tried to ride it without "asking". It could have thrown me down immediately. But it went to the only one bush around and " delivered " me into it. So I don't break a bone! My dad said "he just spared you a month in hospital Next time you ask it politely first!" From a Donkey I learned that animals sense cavities under the ground - it was choosing its route on the street so that they never stepped over a channel (cables or water). Donkey showed me Evolution! - it has a black spot where the thumb used to be. A million years ago. Grandpa had a donkey. As his last one died he took his cap down and cried. I've never seen that hard man cry before. Later I found out he cried because with that donkey died one world. One universe. True. It was 1989. Cars came everywhere. Donkeys disappeared. People got rich on Stuff. On plastic. People became poor on Heart. On empathy. No donkeys anymore.

Very well said i agree with everything she said. This is slavery this is abuse!Donkeys and horses shouldn’t be used as transport anymore. We can use our legs, cars or lifts. It’s 21 century, come on people! How can you feel good riding a living creature that is not able to speak or to remove all these things from its body. Every time i see a donkey or a horse carrying stuff or pulling a cart..it’s disturbing to me.

It is our fault that animals in general are abused for our food system, clothing, entertainment and experimentation. Until we change our way of thinking and stop supporting these industries this will never change. We should stop supporting industries that abuse human also. Live in this world but don’t be of this world.

I got married in Santorini, it's the most beautiful place. However, I recall sitting at the old port watching overweight tourists taking Donkey rides when a walk would have been better for them! Some people just have mindset of entitlement and to hell with the bigger picture. Behind the boutiques, designer shops etc though, life can be tough for some locals who rely on tourism, so you can't blame them for trying to make a income. As tourists we just need be more aware and not just have a "well I'm on holiday" mindset. Poor things.

The relationship between humans and animals including birds is the most shameful aspect of the human character. Nothing seems able to persuade people of the cruelty and suffering endured by other species at our hands. I despair, I really do. Whether it’s the grotesque chicken markets of Nepal, the chained elephants in the same country, or the manifest cruelties of cat, caged bird, and dog owners here in the UK, the dreadful street markets of Barcelona, the in humane treatment of horses in Hollywood, and so on and so on humans just cant seem to stop being cruel to animals. I believe psychologists call it displacement - taking it out of the helpless for the injuries and wrongs one suffers at the hands of people stronger than us - you know like having to have sex with the producer to get that part in the movie

How many ways do humans abuse animals who cannot complain at all and just surrender to their fate? Let me count the ways. The truth is you cannot count the ways. When will people learn to be kind to animals?
