Growing up building cars with my dad we built either 454s or SB 400s and we always put them into late 60s early 70s Impalas, Caprices. With a well build TH 400 trans these SB 400s , when built right are screamers on the street, crazy torque, without drag tires you have to pedal the motor to get a decent hook up. here is my SB 400 in a 1972 Caprice- my first car I ever owned. Resto was in 1996, my first paint job as well, still looks good. No one has non donked 4 door hard tops anymore, but I do. Pure old school build. Just rebuilt motor for second time in 2018 with exact same setup I ran in the 1990s. Stock cast iron heads, hand ported and polished, a Edlb performer dual- split plain elevated runner one side of plenum is higher then the other while still being dual plain. I don't know where my dad found them I know they are early 70s manufactured. I sprung for a new Edlb carb the AVS 2 650 CFM -nice design and improvements over the older carbs. I'm running a 278 Issyk cam with essentially all stock internals besides pistons, rocker arms and push rods. Fun street cruiser. 400's had a reputation for overheating. Never experienced that but we always run them with no thermostat and 4 row aluminum radiators with electric fans. You can literally idle the engine for an hour and it stays at 170F I have the thermo coupler set at for the fans to engage at 180F. Also higher rev driving Iv never seen temps above 190F on a 85F temperature day of cruising and romping it down the highway. Its a 6000 RPM reving torque machine. Never dyno tested it, Who Cares! Its fun and it will pretty much take on anything its gone against on the streets around here these days because no one drives their trailer queens on the road anymore. Why Ah !! build the motor and tranny to match your desired use. I run a 3200 Stall B&M hole shot converter and my rear gearing you ask? the stock 273 rear gears is the key to final power evenly delivered to the roadway surface. 1st gear to 2nd at WOT that comes at 60 MPH 2nd gear to 3rd shift that comes at 85 to 90 mph. tops speed ? dunno, speedo only goes to 120mph. When your sweeping dash gauge needle goes an inch past 120 on the cluster you know your really moving LOL. Yes I have the properly calibrated spedo pickup gear in the trans I did pay a shop to dial that for me years ago. Keep the SB 400 Alive Folks!! My vids below enjoy! The first video I posted 12 years ago. I had balding rear tires and decided to do a burnout till they blew.. Well one did blow as you will hear. The tire tread separated from the sidewalls , shot out the back, ripped my quarter panel nearly to shreds blew the bottom of trunk floor pan upward, tire left the car and went through wall of garage into the closet in the house that just so happened to be my wife at the time's wardrobe room. LOL we aren't married any more LOL. She was never a car person anyway. Total invested since 1995 in car- 350 dollar purchase , just over 12,000 spent on resto and the newest engine rebuild. Value to my life.. priceless! kzitem.info/news/bejne/1nh5sIWwpX5enI4 kzitem.info/news/bejne/sIpts5Wqj6SJdWU kzitem.info/news/bejne/tXp_qYyvbaWKf6w kzitem.info/news/bejne/2XtvmoNvsJmnjHo

We at SBR -Still Building Rockets and Wells Engineering were building this LT2 engine back in early 1990's and having great success long before the 383 came out. The 400 small block also used shorter connecting rods. Not so good for performance considering a lot of high performance builders like to use a six inch rod.

@Curtiss Smith A lot of people equate HP with spinning an engine at high RPM's which is unnecessary for the street. I use the stock rods and with the combination of parts I put into the 400's I build they make about 470 hp @ 5700 rpm, have good street manners, and don't break the bank doing it. And as Larry the Cable Guy would say, I don't care who you are that's good performance.

From 1970 they came in cars -1972 they made a heavy chevy chevelle with aluminum heads from the factory. This 400 small block was a car motor fro 70-75 then from 1975 - 1980 it was a truck motor finding it’s way in to 1 ton vans that motor homes are made from and only in a 1/2 ton if it was 4wd the rest were 3/4 ton or bigger . Now back to the car heavy chevy those were the factory 4 bolt main blocks that had 3 freeze plugs down each side of the block were the motor mount is also they were puffed out like a big block were the 3 freeze plugs were those were what GM designated to be SPHE that’s Special High Performance Engine. It also had what was used on the late 60s corvette transistor ignition! That’s basically electronic ignition they never released that on all cars until 1975 that’s the first year of HEI we’re the coil is in the top of your distributor cap ! That’s HEI High Energy Ignition it was around 38,000 volts compared to the points set up less than 20,000 ! Also just a little fun fact 396 got factory over bored to make them see 402 cubic inches the last 2-3 years they were released. There bore and stroke is 4.126 x 3.76 now the small block 400 was 4.125 bore and 3.75 stroke. The cars were sold as 396 but we’re actually 402 71 &72 the trucks were a bit different saying 400”invader” and that’s why they all say 400 small block ! Because in the binging the trucks were knowen to have a 400 big block ! Then this the saying always you hear 400 small block no one just says 400

if you can get 750 hp by boring a 400 30 over you are worth millions to anyone who knows that the bore size has no real hp difference it is the stroke, compression ratio, and by far the heads where you get 750 hp and that much hp with pump gas or race fuel is hard to get unless you run power adder it is possible but very few engine builders can make that # happen with a stock 400 you need a aftermarket block to hold up to that kind of hp around 600 hp you need to get a better block because it just won't hold up to that kind of stress like a dart block or even a billet aluminium block

400s were designed to tow around ever increasing size cars. Low comp sluggers. They can be modified ofcourse but not much around in pistons or rods. The siamese blocks end up expanding to oblong bores! They never seem to last well modified. 400 Ford is a far better engine to do that job. 350s however will always be superior

400 studded 4 bolt is stronger than the 2 bolt though.....
@darinr9424
4 жыл бұрын
na start with a 2 bolt. get 4 bolt splayed caps and have it machined to use them. add studs and your set. if you start with a 4 bolt and go with splayed caps part of the bolt or stud is exposed in the original outer hole for the factory 4 bolt cap. 2 bolt and machi e to accept 4 bolt splayed caps is the way to go.
@albertseelig4776
3 жыл бұрын
A 400 4 bolt is stonger than a 2 bolt. All main 5 main caps on the 4 bolt block are made w/ nodular iron caps. I have a 2 bolt(509)casting and a 4 bolt 511 block. Ive measured all the dimensions in the main saddle on both blocks and they are exactly the same. A 4 bolt block is better than a 2 bolt block period. A 2 bolt with aftermarket splayed caps is stronger than a factory 4bolt. I wish people would stop spreading crap that they've head instead of actually checking.
@DaveMcLain
3 жыл бұрын
@@albertseelig4776 No they are not stronger. Take a look where they drilled the holes for the outer bolts on the 400 and you'll see that it is right where the main webbing is at its weakest. In a sense you add fasteners which is good but you weaken the main webbing by drilling the holes which is bad. That's why the 2 bolt is thought of as stronger.
@shovel5180

@@DaveMcLain I'm with ya. Have had best luck with 2 bolt studded with the stock blocks. 600+ go with the aftermarket block, way too much invested into reciprocating and top end to put it into the factory casting.👍
