I want a Beetle so bad :') I'm not even done with my drivers license but if I could get one of these as a first car I'd be so delighted :')

Nice review Mr. I had 2 of these...and 02 and and 07 facelift. I’m over them being bagged so badly by VW haters. Both of mine were gems (and yes I had a FLOWER in the vase) and I could not fault either of them too much. The 07 build quality was not up to the same standard as the 02. Yes barbie beetle, retro etc etc but Beetle fans have VW oils in our veins.....we are sold. To this day I have a 14 1.4 turbo in Toffee Brown. Love it. Back in the day my all time fave was a 1963 Candy Apple Red 1200CC called Thomas. man...the places we went together.....from one end of NZ to the other. Beau

Your transmission is not maintenance free.. Change your transmission filter and fluid.. it's 4 bolts to take the pan off. The 01M is a great transmission. If you never changed your engine oil you would develop problems as well. Take that into consideration

ooops. not a good idea if fluid never had been replaced way after 200 000k miles, then leave it and use the bonus life left of it. if you change it beyond 200 000k for example it would be undriveable after fluid change

I am a big fan of this cute beetle. In fact I own 2 of them and previous own another 2, total of 4 of beetle. All of them develop a very strong toxic odor which prevent any living being inside the car. The automatic transmission is guarantee to fail and would cost your legs and arms to repair it. Don't be fool like me to fall in love of it's look and have the2003 beetle like new condition with less than 38k seating on my driveway for just a look. Because of the toxic smell will kill you in every single beetle. Last, VW use the most cheapest materials to build this car, such as all interior plastic will melt and become sticky. Most of parts is made by plastic instead of metal. If you are a parent, don't buy beetle for you son or daughter.

I didn't know that Beetles in the US were converted to run on gas. Is it LPG or CNG? In the rest of the world they were only available as diesel or petrol versions.

The transmission on any car is not "maintenance free". I would have preferred a manual in the 98+ Beetle. I believe they were assembled in Mexico.

Yes, the transmission is free of maintanance - until you get strandet on the side of the road! Really!?! Do an atf and tilter-change!!! I drive a beetle myself and love the car! Change oil every 4-5.000 miles, only fullsynthetic. The rocker-panels are a problem - they are always very rusty. Buy wind-shields for the windows, and the care is perfect!

it’s definitely due to the sensors just being faulty, a very common issue with all new beetles.
