Theoden was always my favorite character. He goes against "good' narrative convention in the sense that he can only react to forces and circumstances beyond his control, but that's the whole point of his character - he has only one choice - to rise to his duty, or not, and he rises to it magnificently.

Theoden is unique in that he is not some hero of prophecy, he's not the White Wizard, he's not the long lost King come back to save the world, by all rights he should be like Denethor, "the lesser son of greater sires", and yet he's not. He rises to his duty because it's the right thing to do, and he does it knowing full well it means his demise. Gen X'er here and it makes me happy to know that people your age are still learning these stories. King Theoden is a great example of what JP calls willingly embracing your sacrifice. Especially after one has been living in black pill Hell as he was under Saruman's influence. Slowly poison dripping his mind with the repeating message "abandon all hope". But as close as his inner flame was to going out, it had not yet. Such an example of a man for our time. You'd probably agree, but I think that one of the other greatest heroes from LOTR for our time is Sam. His reverie on the slope of Mount Doom, both book and movie. The way he could stand in the darkest, most dangerous and hopeless place in the world where it seems like all is lost and yet somehow, his faith is never broken. Even though it seems like a sure thing that the world is ending, he finds it in him to get back up and take another step forward.

Sam could do it because he was simple, and that's not an insult. He trusted his master, Frodo, totally. He couldn't have carried the ring, he never would have volunteered for it, but since Frodo did, he followed him. He was able to believe in their triumph over the enemy because he believed in Frodo, he didn't care for battles and hopelessness, because his master wouldn't fail. That's why, for me, the betrayal and sadness in Sam portrayed in the movies when Frodo refuses to throw the ring into Mt. Doom hits so deep. He's gone this whole journey, able to make jokes and be hopeful because he never doubted Frodo, but at the last moment his everlasting hope was slashed. Even Samwise the brave was brought low.

The thing about Theoden was that the Battle of Pelennor fields was essentially Armageddon for the peoples of Middle-Earth. Theoden knows just about everything that's going on with the War. He knows that the chance that can destroy Sauron can also restore him to full power. BUT...the stakes are "Total Ruin" or "The End of Evil." Faced with that, there's nothing futile about giving 110% against impossible odds because the potential gain is literally Everything. However he dies, he fought to save the entire world. Even his ancestors couldn't claim that honor.

Closest would be the Rohirrim founding father Eorlas, who pledged alliance with Gondor and his horse lords partook in destroying Sauron's forces in the War of the Last Alliance. As thanks, the Kings of Gondor had given his people the lands of Rohan to live in and inhabit. Afterwards, another term for the people of Rohan is Eorlingas, Sons of Eorl, and I think Theoden lived up to and maybe even surpassed mighty Eorlas.

@@supernautacus If he had been there for the March on the Black Gates, it's likely Sauron wouldn't have even opened them. Sauron knew that he had an advantage when Aragorn rode up with the Gondorians. But if both Aragorn and Theoden had been there, with the cavalry (or what was left of it) present? Sauron would've gone radio silent because he would've known that if this army at his front door routed 75% of his forces, then the remaining 25% wouldn't have stood a chance. Sauron was also losing ground in Erebor and Mirkwood (possibly Lothlorien too) because of the mutual resistance by the Dwarves and Elves. He might've said "Fuck it, let them stand out there for years if they want, I'll regroup in a decade or so." So no, Frodo and Sam likely wouldn't have succeeded unless the Orcs assembled at the gates to prepare for a battle that would ultimately not come.

Unsolicited advice coming: Seek out community organizations (maybe even your local political party!) and volunteer your time. I can speak for my own organization, a local Democratic Party organization in a fairly red county - we and others are starving for new blood and ideas - and we honestly need younger folks with experience and knowledge of the digital world. For example, I recently entrusted a significant portion of our digital efforts to a recent college grad. He’s now doing to be a delegate at the national convention. Get to know and learn from the older folks and you’ll find yourself being called a community leader before you know it.

Thank you for this, my young friend. I’m an 82 child. Things were indeed kinder before technology made us aware of everything and everyone everywhere. Fear didn’t rule and insist on our cowering participation at every turn. Your video gives me hope. We are all so partitioned off from one another, this video shows me we see the same broken realities. The same poisoned wrongness. That awareness breathes hope. We are in a time of an awakening. People ARE realizing this is NOT the world they want to live in. There will be a time soon where we must be as Theoden and choose courage, even amidst fear. Choose to be kind, even to the unkind. Question what the Grima Wormtounges spew (there are a lot of those guys these day). We will find that courage and forge new better realities. Such battles begin with us making a simple choice. Reject the false reality, where we are told to hate each other, and be kind and open. Bring laughter and light and awareness. These things chase the dark. We can choose to embody light. To be strong. To be good. And I believe we will. My unconditional love to you all.

I love the poetic way in which Tolkien describes the moment where Théoden's story arc concludes and he finally lives up to the fame of his forefathers: "Théoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them." The shadows of Mordor are driven back just as Théoden steps out from the shadow of his ancestors, shining like the sun, restoring colour to a bleak world and entering the realm of myths and gods. Théoden here is no longer a weak, bent old man, but a mighty warrior-king who has overcome all of his own struggles to become a living legend that will inspire countless future generations to greatness in turn.

An excellent piece, young sir. I did not expect that I would be left feeling great empathy and fellow feeling for those much younger than myself. I have spent sixty odd years seeing the world my fathers and grandfathers died for and built be diminished and their glories squandered by self-serving, evil-minded, men at the pinnacle of the pyramid of power. Nearly everyone I have ever known, trusted and loved is dead - as Elrond said, my list of allies grows thin! Certain things, shiny, ephemeral, things, have come into being that distracted far too many of us from what was really going on. And I do fear, in that way of older men whose power is nigh on spent, that there is no way to throw back the dark veil that is eclipsing all that has been built. But hearing that some of those who still have vitality in their limbs and spirits have a mind to resist, solely because it is a call of duty to their civilisation that they hear ... that gives me hope.

However, as a german Gen Z member of almost 25 years, I have to always remind myself that it is largely untrue how I put the ones before us on such a high pedestal. My forefathers have done terrible things that ruptured the earth. My great grandfathers all died in the second world war, probably defending Hitlers values and exterminating the hopes and homes of other nations. I am saying this here so that you all keep it fresh in your mind, that the generations before us have made and done terrible mistakes and deeds. We *have* to be better than them. Many people say that The Two Towers is their "least favourite" movie of the three, but that's not the case for me, I loved the second movie so much because I simply loved the entire Rohan plotline, the healing of Theodén, the tragic of his only son's death and the display of courage in hopeless times during the Battle of Helms Deep (especially since his courage falters first, but Aragorn is able to ignite it again). Bernard Hill played Theodén magnificently, so I was really sad to hear of his passing a few months ago. May he rest in peace.

I have been feeling this way about Theoden for a few years now. The line by Tony Soprano in the first episode of the Sopranos “I came in at the end. The best is over.” Is also another sentence I constantly remember. Perhaps it was different, it can be great again, we must make it not so. It is in ourselves to do so. One of the generations in ages to be poorer than their parents and grandparents. In many ways, we are at risk of more addiction, health issues, less opportunities, sexual and social issues etc. We probably have more in common with the silent generation in my opinion. In an ever changing world that is alien to the previous world. However, there is hope. Even if there is darkness, light will come. We must all try to stay in the light and have faith, work hard and keep going. God bless.

If there's one thing that we Millennials have in common with Gen Z, it's that many of us became adults at a time when things were stacked against us. In the U.S., the American dream has slowly been falling out of reach, and our country's leadership has become too proud and too privileged. In other parts of the world, like Japan and South Korea, the birthrate has fallen well-below what is required for demographic replacement, which will inevitably lead to a slow crumbling of their economy and infrastructure over the years. In the third world, more and more corruption and wars have been taking place, painting a grim future for the young in those countries. All this, while climate change is an ever-looming threat that simply can not be contained with the way things are running in post-capitalistic societies. It almost seems like there is a global plague eating at the very soul of humanity. I'm not sure how much hope I have in this world's current leadership to make the best choices for the future. It will ultimately be left to future leaders to correct the mistakes of our past and current ones. I only pray that they will be the right ones, though I fear that things will only continue to get worse over the coming years before they get any better.

Another thing is that from our perspective, US and EU are basically mordor, and we are and have been in the dark ages for a long time where evil and Saurons rule over the world, and few good people have no choice but to resist against far stronger forces of evil and inveveibly be martyred, so the the whole "Fall" thing from our perspective is like the fall of Sauron and the dark ages that started vaguely around the start of colonial era, and honestly it feels good, i can't explain it but there is a deep feeling of relief that tides are finally turning against Dark forces, i hope i conveyed the perspective good enough, and that that the experience is not the same for everyone.

I don't think it's necessary to achieve heroic feats to be a great man, just like Tolkien said, it's the ordinary deeds or ordinary folk that can sometimes make the most difference. My father was firefighter by the time they were in their 20s. I compare myself to them and find myself wanting. What he also said about our generation feeling like we're fighting a losing battle I also feel and it's why I love the Dwarves from warhammer fantasy. They are a people who are dying out, but unlike the Elves they don't seek an "escape" from there doom by ignoring it or drowning it in excess. The Dwarves meet it head on knowing they most likely will die. But them it's not about winning its about there honor there clan, there home, there people and there ancestors. They know that when they die it would be better to meet it axe in hand filled with grim determination to see it to the end no matter the outcome. So that when they do dies they can take pride that they died the way there forefathers did. That's what appeals to me and while they might not give me hope what iy give me is just as useful determination and will. To see whatever may happen to end no matter what it may be because I know its how grandpa would have done it. It's how he did do it in WW2.

Rest in peace Bernard Hill. As a young kid who loved the films - and then a young adult who read the books - King Theoden's death made me cry twice. Two very different times, through two different mediums, for different reasons based on how each was depicted. Goated character

Great video man, Theoden is my favorite LOTR character. Keep it up. If there’s any advice I would give, It would be that your narration is clear and well written, but maybe a bit slow paced and monotone. It is kinda easy to zone out for someone with ADHD. Not saying you should do stupid exaggerations or anything, maybe just speed up the reading slightly and add some inflection.

If this is an issue you have with certain videos you can always increase the playback speed slightly in the settings, just upto 1.25x or 1.5x speed. It only takes a couple of clicks and is just as easy to change back again. It doesn’t make the narration sound like chipmunks or anything lol it just ups the pace a little 👍

I would say but there are many ways that the Western world has suffered a lot in recent decades. And there are certainly many socially affective dimensions that indicate that things are worse in the western world than they were in the 90s. But certainly there are ways that it's better, and I don't necessarily know about the world as a whole.

I was a gen Z kid raised by a Boomer father and Gen X mother. All I have ever heard were the stories of glory days and simpler times. As I grew older, I lost my home, lost my friends, lost my identity, and lost my hope. I desperately yearned to achieve the dreams of my forefathers while stuck in a position where I believed it was impossible. Only when I left the hands of my parents did I realize that their goals were unfounded. That their whims were not my own. I could achieve greatness in my own way. It took the love and compassion of my partner and new friends in college to drive me away from the shell I had become and accept my new identity. I am not my forefathers. I am not a puppet for someone else's dreams. I am my own man. And I have been fighting for that fact, despite all the opposition from my family. I've lived in constant fear for my identity... but then I remember that I have a family of my own now and I have to defend its right to exist. Being a transman in this era is not an easy thing. A lot of people hate you just for existing. Your very presence becomes a political statement, whether you want it or not. I've been threatened, beaten, assaulted, and demeaned by so many people. But here I stand. And I am proud of how far I've come. And whether I die today or when I'm in my twilight years, I will continue to fight for my place. Even if I am pissing myself in fear the whole time.

Same story here, except my parents are both Gen X. I see a problem in the housing and rental market though. I agree that the attachment to parents really does prevent us from establishing our own goals but I also must mention that so many of our generation can’t leave home due to rising costs, they can’t experience what we have yet. I think it’ll be in due time when people of our generation (and some late millennials) will finally have a place to call our own but the opposition will be staunch as it’s in corporate and wealthy interests to keep us renting, and we will have to face against the largest voting block in US history that being the baby boomers.

Even Polybius writes about how the Romans of his era were not the same as those who fought against Hannibal in the Second Punic War. And economic ups and downs have happened throughout history, short term and long term trends. Century after century. We are in a low point. Do not give into despair, get busy making life better for you and those around you. Acknowledge things are bad and get to work. All that matters is the present and the unwritten future. Nostalgia is a drug like any other.

Probably because he appeals to everyone, and "gen z" are just young people. We really have to stop this cycle where we act like the newest generation is the first to ever be young.
@kozlorog

It's a perpetual cycle. Time and time again, generation after generation, young people assume themselves to be THE GENERATION. The generation that made huge advancements in sex, partying, entertainment, philosophy, etc. And of course they face the hardest and most important problems. Such notions are always cured when a new generation comes, does exactly that, but this time around you personally are excluded and alienated. A light bulb brights up: "Oh, so I am one of many generations and other generations actually were not a cardboard caveman I have imagined..." But, Theodon is indeed a hero of Gen Z. The movie he is in came out at 2000's, just in time to impress the young Gen Z minds. As the time goes, new movies will come out and new heroes will emerge. As great as LOTR is, it would be naïve to assume it will be so revered forever. Do we still widely revere the books of the past, like "Song of Roland"? Enjoy the ride, it's not awful long.

Sorry if this comes off as mean, but I don’t find this video to be very compelling. The idea that the past is grander than the present is an illusion that has always been around; the fact that The Lord of the Rings is such an old story is proof of that. History focuses on large figures and large events, which are actually quite rare. If you traveled back in time to “the good old days” you’d be surrounded by regular people just trying to get by. Same as now. We will only know who and what our large figures and events are in retrospect.

Having lived through the past, it was certainly no utopia... heck, among other things, we all lived with the very real possibility of nuclear annihilation, but life actually was better than life today. We were not rendered isolated and lonely by technology, nor politically impotent by the technocrats who controlled it. Political radicals and reactionaries existed, but the overwhelming majority of people didn't hate each other (including their own families) based on things like which political puppet they casted their ballot for or whether or not they got jabbed with a needle either. Racial animosity seemed like it was dying out and the "Cold War" was coming to an end... or so we all thought. Of course, both of those evils are back with a vengeance, but the simple fact that ordinary people treated each other better, at least for a few precious moments in the long history of the world, did, in actuality, make for a better life.

Being trapped in a pit of nihilism and a profound sense of inferiority are sensations which I think are also shared by Gen Z's predecessors and successors. Millennials and Gen Alpha also struggle with these feelings, but I think each successive generation after experiences these feelings to a greater degree. In our technologically soul-dead world it is hard to look to the future with optimism, and we often look to the past with shame, like we are spitting on the memory of better, older generations with our despair and decadence. Yet we forget that these dark times we find ourselves in have come before, and they will come again. This video essay makes an excellent argument, because just like King Theoden, despite our circumstances and overwhelming sense of ennui, we can still pull ourselves up from the abyss and achieve our own measure of greatness. Theoden, perhaps more than any character, is emblematic of that famous discussion between Frodo and Gandalf: “Frodo: I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened. Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”

I think the reason people think gen Z is "less peaceful" is the same reason that people thought that the young generations of the 60s were "Trouble makers". Certain groups of people that have been looked down upon, pushdown, and undermined are once again speaking up for even bigger change and now being met with even prouder louder voices of previous generations who seek to return to "Normal Life" a.k.a. when said marginalized people were under the boot of society. Also for anyone saying that "the world was so much peaceful when I was growing up in the 90s and 80s". I could day the same thing about the 2000s and early 2010s. You know why? Became i was I'm looking at the World Through the rose tinted glasses of childhood. It's all about perspective but I believe in no single time in human history is more peaceful then the next. It just seems that way because you live in a first world country.

Lines that always hit me like a ton of brick. "I wish it had never come to me." "So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for us to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." And "that there is some good in this world. . . and it's worth fighting for."

It feels real to every generation, not just Gen Z. But it's always rose-tinted goggles looking back on a complicated past. That stuff you mentioned early on, building countries and whatnot? Depending on the perspective you look at them from, those aren't so spectacular or good or great things at all.
