As an airport manager, the orientation of the runway is screaming at me. This project would never make it past the noise study when people realize that planes will be arriving right over the town. Then there's also the possibility of landing mishaps and the risk that poses to the town. In fact, the town sits right in the middle of accident potential zones, the areas that are defined as having the highest potential of aircraft accidents. The FAA would have a field day with this and Mayor Lee is looking at crazy lawsuits.
@tillycatcat
11 ай бұрын
I think you'll find that after the meteorological study, this was the only orientation that would work due to unusual crosswinds causing extreme wind shear should the runway be orientated the other way. Noise abatement was put in place, with the SID requiring an immediate turn out to the sea, however for some reason, the plates were mispublished and Jeppesen are on it with a fix. Mayor Lee is in contact with the FAA to fix things.

Airport manager here; If you’d like lighting along the roads, it would most likely be very low level lighting. The tall mast lighting would interrupt your FAR Part 77 Surfaces (approach, transitional, etc). The ones near the ramp, hangars and parking spaces are perfectly fine, just the ones close to the runway ends and sides. For a smaller airport, security wise, you worked it out just fine for the “checkpoints” to enter the Air Operations Area as well as the perimeter fencing. Hope that helps! @@QemeH I like to imagine that Chuckles and his wife moved to the area in the 70's, living out of their Volkswagen camper van on the very land that is now the park. Partly because of his wife's love of animals and partly because he thought it'd be a "groovy" thing to do, they started a small rescue center for injured wild animals. Always struggling to have enough money to care for the animals, vet bills, keep up the enclosures, and also feed themselves, they opened the center as a "park" so they could charge admission. They'd give tours to scouts, school groups, and anyone curious to see wild creatures up close. Over time Chuckles realized there was a lot of money to be made from people's love of animals and so things evolved and the park grew. At some point it became more about "making money" than rehabilitating animals and the park became what it is now. It's possible that there is still a good deal of the younger, more altruistic Chuckles that is surfacing as he gets older. Only Phil knows. 🙂

Hello! Not a pilot but an aviation enthusiast here. Basically EVERY commercial airport has a fence at a bare minimum, it should be impossible for somebody to enter the runways/taxiways without passing into a restricted area first. Also because im nitpicky - You can download some great plane assets on the steam workshop. Try some you'd find locally, like United, American, Spirit, etc. One more thing - taxiways should come out of the END of the runway, since a plane cant turn around if it gets to the end (unless with a dedicated turning spot)

Chuckles has the right idea. Making a preserve not only will roll in nature loving tourists, but it also makes for a landmark that locals can be proud of. Then again, Lee has the right idea to keep up with town ameneties and affordable housing to those who live there. My vote goes to Chukles though, and here is why. If the preserve can be made, there might be people who wish to move in to the town. If that happens, then Lee can take the seat next vote to develop affordable housing, thus roping in the people who want to move there. Thus, they won't loose money on housing taxations and earn more money on the tourism, and can also make way for new businesses.

My local airport serves mostly for medical purposes (like the medical helicopter depot) but also acts as a general aviation airport used by amateur pilots, as well as events like airshows, and use by farmers for cropdusting. hi! pilot here - the airport looks fantastic, although 2 things stood out to me: the lighting around the roads as well as the lack of a control tower. the lights are too tall and bright to be that close to a runway, though i would suggest some smaller dimmer streetlights. as for the tower, an airport this size with commercial traffic would likely be a class-c or class-d airport, and would subsequently have a control tower. some airports are uncontrolled (their airspace is class-g), and while they do exist, you wouldn't really ever see these bigger commercial jets using them other than that, great build! love it!

Pilot here, almost all small paved non-commercial airports at least have a fence, oftentimes with a code to enter for both people and vehicles. At an airport like this one that offers commercial passenger service security would be more strict in the secure commercial section where everything would need to be screened by security. The general aviation section with the private hangars, FBOs, tie-downs, etc. would have no real security beyond a gate. Also, some people are pointing out the flight path over the city, but another important consideration is the general wind direction must align with the runway.

As a pilot, I noticed that the service road lights that are paralleling the runway could be confused as runway lights from afar. Since they are white and similar to the runway, pilots might think that the lights are the edge of the runway and not the edge of the airport. Bright lights also affect night vision making it harder for pilots to see details at night. I would recommend to either change the color of the lights to amber, dim the lights considerably, or remove the lights entirely to prevent confusion and distraction from the pilot. I am so happy you are building another airport for this build! I fly commercially on regional jets to northern Michigan all the time, and it makes me happy to see this addition. Certified Aviation Nut and De-icer - Those "water retention ponds" serve a bigger purpose than you might think. Airports, especially ones in the north have specific drainage systems to capture and treat De-ice / Anti-ice fluid. These ponds generally have pumps in the middle of the water that keep the water moving. Additionally, these ponds tend to be lined with rock. One example of these ponds at a smaller airport can be seen at KRFD. Hope this helps explain the ponds you saw at Mackinac!

Airport Technician here those roads (we use asphalt but dirt is possible too) around the airport is usually used for maintenance. In general you have a fence around the airport and along that fence are camera and other security poles. there are also small, sometimes underground, facilities for power, water, network, etc. If there are some underground roads or railways even emergency exits might be possible - usually fenced in separately. On bigger Airports you also have some small parking lots inside the security area because those service car for us technicians working there need parking too ;) International Airports also need some other services like firefighters or even some police station but given the games limitations one could skip that here. Like others said already in general the taxiway is connected to the ends of the runway. you can add additional connections further down the line for planes that don't need the whole runway to land/take off though. unfortunately there is a game limitation on the runways. Usually a runway is used bidirectional depending on the wind. In general the airport tries to schedule take offs against the wind.

Tons of others have already left great suggestions for the airport. A control tower isn't necessary at a smaller airport, the pilots would either broadcast to each other or a nearby facility would remotely control the airspace (leaving ground operations uncontrolled). This airport looks busy enough it may need one, though, with those queues on the taxiways. I would also consider the queuing distance vs taxiway directionality, you could end up with gridlock with the way it currently is. The helicopter route flies a little too close to the city for a 24hr transit operation, not to mention efficiency. Either restrict it to daytime only or move it away from the residences (and making it a much more direct, straight route). Only a scenic/tourist attraction would detour along the coast like that. And of course it goes without saying, great video and thank you so much! I always look forward to what you've got cooking up next and even to seeing chuckles move into c:s2!

Great episode! I had some thoughts as we wrap this series up with the major airport update this week: 1. For this week's episode: Would it be possible to create a smaller shuttle from the airport direct to some of the major hotel and motel destinations? Maybe even service directly into Superior state? 2. Since we revisited Marquette Island, it reminded me the passenger ferry terminal would work so, so much better if it let off in the downtown area instead of in front of the rural home frontage. I know it's tricky with car-centric roadways and all, but I believe in you! 3. And in wrapping up: I know others have mentioned it before, but now that the beaches and lighthouse have been put in place, finally putting in the historic Fort Michilimackinac would be such a great final touch. 4. Lastly, did we ever revisit the name assigned to the new cabin development up over by the driving range? As a Michigander, I am going to miss Nicolet Bay and Clearwater County so very much. Recently we had some new nerdy neighbors move in from the Keweenaw Peninsula so I have been turning them on to your series to get their thoughts too. My wife and I have made it a point to sit down any time there is a new Nicolet Bay and play armchair football with your builds, but also to audibly call out whenever you put the pipes underneath the road, right where they belong. She finds Cities Skylines to be a bit too complicated for her tastes, but really enjoys your builds and calm, thorough explanations, even if we don't always agree on the direction of the build each episode, but that only inspires us to take your knowledge and do better in our own save files and to always respect the topography. I feel this should be a part of the Airport Expansion, or an asset needs to be made to maximize realness. If you have a relationship with CO, this is a suggestion you should make.

I’ve flown around a good portion of the PNW and a lot of the smaller county airports do have that little of security. Sometimes just a small gate and chain link fence. However if the airport has scheduled flight like you have here, there’s more required security.

I’m a fixed wing flight medic, and I go into a lot of Airports. The only airstrips I see without fences or with “employee” parking inside the fence are unregulated gravel airstrips in villages here in Alaska. All other developed airports are much more secure. Also since you added the helicopter depot, you should add fire and medical helicopters to the airport as well.

A small regional airport is referred to as class D. There is no tower and the only security would be offered by the FBO (Flight Base Operation) the lights at night are controlled by incoming aircraft by clicking the Mic key button so many clicks to turn them on, but be careful!! They are on a timer and will switch off after 15 minutes or so. The only airport below a class D would be the grass fields that a lot of farmers have, especially back in the day.

As a former resident of Michigan, I've been a fan of Lee for a while, but this election cycle I am one of the 1,815 that voted for Chuckles. I agree with Chuckles' vision in preserving wildlife and urbanizing the current city. Nevertheless, this is one of my favorite builds!

First, I absolutely love your series, and this is my favorite! I do wish you slowed down, though. It feels like there’s more and more sped up parts, whereas the reason I got into CPP videos is because I enjoyed watching you figure out how to build things as you went! Just a piece of positive-intent feedback. THANK YOU for making such high quality content!

Thought about the helo stop on the island that maybe the airport folks could weigh in on: wouldn't the recycling centres be FOB central for loose debris that could get thrown up by prop wash? Might not be smart to have them so close.
@simongeard4824

Not a big deal. That location - jutting out on a peninsular on an offshore island - is probably windy as hell anyway, so the recycling centres would need to avoid leaving loose stuff sitting around anyway.

Oh, and responding to my since vanished post. Yes, Irish is used regularly in western Ireland, so air traffic controllers, like I was once, have to speak Irish since pilots might use it as their primary language. That's fine by me, I'm a Gaelgoir (that is, my first language is Irish Gaelic).

I live in Niagara Falls USA , and we have a regional airport that is definitely bare bones (with major discount airlines flying from it) compared to the airport in Cheektowaga, NY which is much more heavy on security as it is somewhat a major hub.

Mayor Lee should adopt Chuckles' green belt idea. It's not a bad idea. It's just a bad idea alone. Chuckles would have been a terrible major. He clearly only ran to maintain the status quo and BTW he owned and profited from the primary tourist attraction in the area.

If this is indeed meant to be a small commercial airport, as I understood, and not just a general aviation airport, then there should also be a small area for rental cars, and the service area near the entrance should include a gas station for filling them up before returning them.

I've worked multiple airport jobs and am in flight training at a large airport, so I am very familiar with airports. Your gate checkpoints work just fine, I would also advise a fence around the employee parking to seterate it from the air operations area. The lighting on the road is an issue. 14 CFR Part 77.17 a) 3) states (regarding what is considered and obstruction) "A height within a terminal obstacle clearance area, including an initial approach segment, a departure area, and a circling approach area, which would result in the vertical distance between any point on the object and an established minimum instrument flight altitude within that area or segment to be less than the required obstacle clearance." 14 CFR Part 77 covers a few different requirements for airports and obstacles. But without getting too technical, essentially the lights are close enough to the runway that they would be considered and obstruction, and they would need to be low level lights, and preferebly on the other side of the road. I'm not a massive fan of the runway sending planes straight over the town, but it does happen sometimes for one reason or another, so I wouldn't bother changing the layout. An airport this size would most likely have its own fire department on site. And something I like to do is to copy the approach lights and runway markings to the other end of the runway too. Apart from that, everything looks right as far as airports go

very small airports do have fairly lose security, you don't need to even show an ID to get onto the grounds at them. But there is always a chance you'll run into someone with the FAA doing random ramp inspections.

From an outer banks sandbar local, beach accesses like that typically have a parking lot. Most of the time it’s on the opposite side of the road with ab 2 handicap spots on the beach side

Referring to the beach accesses you put down with the walkover. There’s also a few in between them with drive over accesses for emergency vehicles (ocean rescue, ems, etc.)

There should be a small gas station next to the motel and diner where people could gas up their rental cars before returning them to the airport. That would also add to the commercial value near the hotel.

I haven't worked in an airport, but I have lived in the very rural Midwest, and I can confirm that small airports will often have security that amounts to little more than a fence and a checkpoint. Then again, the airport that I'm talking about only really served private hobbyists and a twice a day 10 seater plane, so perhaps the size of those jets would be too large for that lax of security.

As an Airline pilot and owner of an architects office in germany I have to totally agree with @mikejober The citizens wouldn't be happy about the noise of that airport. Also it's never ideal to position airports parallel to the coast line as the wind is most of the time coming from the coast. (And vise versa depending on the time of the day) paralleling the runway with the coast means that there is most of the time crosswind and as airplanes have crosswind limits (~30kts depending on the plane, the airline and only on dry runway) it could reduce the productivity of the airport. Rotating the runway only 45° could already help with the crosswind limitations and to avoid the town. Some other issues: -the light masts would most probably behind the fence to prevent people of going up. -also employees parking lots can't be without a security checkpoint as everyone who is entering security sensible areas like aprons or hangars have to goo through a screening. A container would already help at both gates. -the heliport is normally part of the airport and should be on the area of that with only fences towards the street. The security will than be inside the building. -last but not least: it would be nice if you couldn't add two rapid exit taxiways to the runway to improve the amount of airplanes that can land behind each other. The game is sadly not allowing real taxiways but you could fake them with concrete. Sorry for the long list. Hope I can help you with that. I always enjoy your videos 👍 Btw. what do you think about my short Cities Skylines video? The accounts name is @pilotect

You can’t use those lights near airport. They’re too tall. Airports have height restrictions. Especially near the glide slope of runway.
