This is mostly an US problem. Yes, some other developing nations might encounter these issues but in the US where kids get things easier, social media is all over and education is declining is more prevalent. Kids are wayyyy tougher in poor countries where they have to fight to survive. Resilience is a great thing to build character and toughness in life.

Comments like this can only come from someone who doesn't travel at all. Education is declining everywhere and in poor countries, education isn't even an option. Yet, if you go to india where some of the poorest people live, you will see everybody (young) have a "smart phone". Same goes for places like Africa or Thailand. They want to the same things our kids want. It's not a US problem, but a globalization and technological problem. Its very sad to see our culture no longer highlight strength, perservance, and overcoming those internal mental pressures to perform. This is a serious societal issue to showcase these athletes as heroes because it tells young people that when the going gets tough, stop and push yourself through it. This shouldn't matter but I have been diagnosed with both anxiety and depression, but it is not an excuse for me to quit or stop trying. I hate when I see these athletes use it as an excuse for giving up. I don't see it as brave or being a hero. A hero would talk about it, share their story, and talk about how important it is to work on it and how you overcame it to accomplish anything in your life.

This is learned behavior and they're not being tested with stressors as children, so when things get tough as an adult they don't know how to handle it. They fold under pressure because they were raised having none. Was being so meticulous about things like shaving his bat handles with bottle caps til it felt perfect in his hands something a zombie would do? Was Hank Aaron hitting fire flies in the dark with a broomstick as a child for hand eye coordination something a zombie Does? Sounds more like they were perfectionists and obsessed with their chosen field, and they battled through a hell of a lot more than these so called business savvy kids of today. imagine Osaka or Simmons seeing and hearing What Bill Russell or Ali did, they'd be headed for a padded cell, they have conniption fits and literally quit in crunch time at the slightest bit of criticism, they're soft and it's painfully obvious, they're in line to be more like Roberto Duran, Maybe still great but when the going gets tough and they don't like it they say "No Mas"

I think todays athletes are 10 times stronger. 20 years ago athletes didn't have the world watching their every move. Athletes couldn't hear the constant individual and collective criticism and hate that athletes experience today. Just the social pressure alone is 1000x more intense. Then the media is 1000x more intense and the competition is more intense. The fact that some of these athletes like simone, who is not the example you should have used, stepped back and said I need a break is not a weakness. This kid has been competing at a world beating pace for 16 years, breaking every record there was. She was past her prime but fighting to compete in one last Olympics only to have it postponed because of covid. To then have to maintain that edge for another year plus at that level is insane. You are not an athlete so you have no idea how hard the competition at that level is. No clue what you are talking about.

Another reason is we allow people that take mental drugs for whatever issue they might have so they can act confident but as soon as they have to compete they are not allowed to take whatever med they had. Than all that is left is a person that really isn't made for the kind of attention that world shines onto you. You see it with celebs, politicians and athletes. The girl in the thumbnail takes Ritalin they say ADHD but in reality its for that confidence boost and you can see that when looking at interviews when she competed for the olympics vs when she wasn't.

Some of this is the result of society now creating a “victim mentality “ in youth. If you are not “the best” at something it is because someone has done something to hold you back. I remember seeing Larry Bird laying on the floor of the Boston Garden during his time off the court because his back was killing him, then he would get up, go back in, and make the opposing players look like fools. I don’t see that sort of mental toughness in today’s players in any sport.

Is it athletics, is it academics, or is it culture ??? I don't know. But the timing seems off to call women athletes soft. I love and respect Biles and Osaka; and if they say what is best for them is to back off, I respect that. We don't need all of the judgment though. If they choose to back away and make room for someone else . . .why the hate? It doesn't diminish what they have accomplished, just makes room for others to shine!

I do agree to some extent, but I mean who can really say for sure. IMO I feel people are just able to express inner feelings and thoughts, and encouraged more to do so than in the past. To say people in the past didn't have issues people today have I think is silly. Is it better to just pretend everything is ok, and suffer in silence, or to express/deal with it. An athlete performs hard every time, practices hard and dedicates their life to perfection, but isn't allowed to occasionally outwardly deal with being human? That's some armchair quarterback shit.

It's true but you can come out about that stuff after you retired. Until then take care of that with your family, friend, coaches and therapist if needed, not in public. To mention Simone in this is egregious. She is the most decorated gymnast in the world who also had to over come a lot after being molested. Then on top of that, her and many of her fellow gymnast were ignored by the adults that were supposed to protect them. Even after dealing with all that, she still won titles. Simone is so good and talented that the Olympic board in gymnastics were trying to change the point system. So the ONE time Simone says "I need time for myself" you call her "soft."...how dare you.

This video clip went on a very stupid path, judging a very small amount of successful athletes for their mental toughness in a game, or rather their ability to identify that they're not right, and standing up for themselves... what's happened in the world, is people have decided that the more money you have the happier your life should be, so the first argument when an athlete begins to have mental adversity is .. "oh but they get paid millions of dollars" "oh they need to toughen up" this toxic judgement is what has lead to many people taking their own lives... Just because you are able to tough it out through situations, doesn't mean everyone else can.. I thought this was an immature conversation between grown ass men, who see money before well being.. need to be better lads
