Fucking A!!! I think this was his finest moment of the series only next to his final call to Skyler where he absolves her of any involvement to the evesdropping police. What a goddamn actor. The intensity of this scene, the pulsating music, the sheer weight of the moment for Walter, the shift in his mental state from frenetic and looking for his money, the desperation to escape, to confusion, and finally disbelief into a state of complete mental breakdown and maniacal laughter. Acceptance of his fate, at the ludicrous thought of being brought down by freakin' Ted was too much for him to process. Anna Gunn was tremendous as well.

It's never a cliche to praise a great piece of work - the feeling of being astounded can never be a cliche as that feeling of "wow" is rare in most creative works. The reason I first hooked onto Breaking Bad was because I saw some repetitive social media talking about an important reveal (probably Gus Fring's exit). And when I finally decided to check the show out, I couldn't believe I'd been missing out on some of the BEST television I'd ever seen. The biggest irony was I instantly became addicted to the series, just like people became addicted to to the high quality blue meth Walter and Jesse cooked.

Just some extra analysis. Let's look back on the Ted Beneke situation. Skylar had previously quit that job because Ted made sexual advances towards her, but went back to work there because she thought a solid job was better to help pay for Walter's bills. As she works there, for someone she's uncomfortable around, she discovers he's been lying on his tax reports, and is placed at a critical position to either report this discovery and lose a job she believes is helping her family survive or become complicit in Ted's criminal behavior. Walt knows nothing of this, just as Skyler doesn't know she doesn't need to be in the position at all because of Walter's drug money. Skyler chooses to falsify the records, and is now intertwined in Beneke's lie. When Skyler discovers Walt has been lying to her, she's enraged. She was putting herself under a predatory boss to help her husband, who was lying about what he was doing to pay off his own bills. More, she now had committed a major felony for Walt, and felt angry and disgusted to be put in the same position Walt was previously in. As a sort of hypocritical revenge, she sleeps with Ted to piss Walter off. All Walter really knows of Ted Beneke is that his wife slept with him and she is breaking the law for him too. He doesn't know that Beneke has to pay his taxes to avoid getting the Whites audited, and doesn't know it's to the tune of 600k. Walter believes that his money is still under the house. Gus threatens Walt's entire family if he doesn't let Gus deal with Hank in his own way. So, Walt gets Saul to place a phone call to the DEA at a specific time, giving a tip that Hank is in danger. This will put Walt's family on the chopping block, within hours of being warned what not to do. In Walt's mind, however, he, Skyler, Jr, and Holly will be gone by then, assuming new identities. We as an audience know the money isn't there. We know that Saul is placing a phone call off screen that is jeopardizing everyone's life. No one can stop what is happening. As Walt dives into the crawlspace, we watch as all the threads unravel at once. Walt learns his wife gave the money that he had saved "for the family" to the person she slept with as revenge - in Walt's mind, for him cooking meth to secure finances "for the family". Everything he had done "for the family" had been disregarded and rejected or attacked, resulting in more and more suffering to what he felt was a noble cause. And then, Skyler looks down on him, and says she gave the money that would now save their lives to the man she cheated on Walt with - "for the family". The phone rings, right on time, meaning Saul put the call in, and the fuse has been lit on a chain of events that cannot be stopped. It is hilariously, painfully, morbidly ironic. Best intentions between words unsaid have left these people staring down the cliff's edge, with nowhere to go, and no immediate way out.

The crawlspace is a metaphor for the space between his home life and the underworld, not life and death.

The music is phenomenal. It mirrors, like stated, the passing of time, or a slow heartbeat, a death knell. The scene is stunning.

Thank you for such a well-made breakdown on this masterclass of an episode! I loved every minute of this critical analysis, especially the end line about the crawl space being Walter's coffin. I had to watch this video a second time to make sure I "liked" it. Turns out I did, but I forgot to comment and subscribe. Looking forward to more of your stuff! Cheers!

An amazing comment I saw under a video which was this scene made sense, but I didn't realise it at the time. It said "It feels like the entire series is having a panic attack" and that stuck with me for a while.

"What is certain is that Walter crawls like a dead man." .................................... Sir did you know dead men don't do much crawling

You are right. This scene and the baby kidnapping scene in the last season were probably the most disturbing for me..

I believe most of us can agree that Breaking Bad was a masterpiece. The only other TV show that comes close to Breaking Bad is Better Call Saul. I haven't found any other show that has kept me on the edge of my seat as much as Breaking Bad did. If you know of any other show, let me know. I'm always interested in giving new things a chance.
