In many anime and manga, scenes of yukaku like Yoshiwara and oiran/yujyo are often portrayed.
You might imagine the Wano arc of One Piece, or the stories of Gintama with Hinowa and Tsukuyo for example.
Yukaku are the red-light districts that existed from the samurai eras for more than 300 years.
In many stories today, they are simply expressed as fancy and gorgeous cities where rich men went to be entertained, but there is so much more than that.
But what were the cities really like?
What did the prostitutes living there experience?
This movie, “A Courtesan with Flowered Skin”, will let you take a closer look at the lives of the yujyo and oiran, and it might entirely change your image of the matter.
I will first briefly introduce the plot of the story, and then share my personal opinion!
In the end of the video, I would like to introduce a few reviews posted by other Japanese audiences to share different points of views.
