I disagree. In fact I almost never take a saw with me when going into the bush. And I'm still here so I must have survived. Silky has superior cutting power but will break. That's not what you want. So if you're gonna bring a saw choose one that might have less cutting power but will bend before it breaks. kzitem.info/news/bejne/2459q3qvj3igfqQ

@@StevanOutdoor I never broke a Silky saw. Recommending a lesser quality tool over using proper technique is "funky" at best....
@StevanOutdoor
3 жыл бұрын
@@SurvivalRussia You might not have broken a Silky saw yet but loads of people did. So it's just how you define 'quality'. Proper technique is all nice when you're at home, well rested, had a good breakfast with coffee. Than you remember to only put pressure on the pull and not the push. But when your cold, wet, tired, hungry, etc. proper technique goes down the drain really quick. You will make mistakes with a saw, a knife or whatever you're using so you need a different 'quality'. The Bahco Laplander being a push and pull saw, that will bend before it snaps is now the 'quality' you're looking for. No user manual. This video of the Dutch Bushcraft Girls is about the best saw for bushcraft and survival. That's why I disagree and many people actually practicing bushcraft and survival seem to agree with me. In fact the DBG's snapped one in the intro of the video and they're not even in any kind of bushcraft or survival situation.

In Russia, we have a proverb: "The slower you go, the further you get". I've found that this is the main rule with Silky (and pretty much with any work you do in the woods in fact). Trying to do things faster then you should leads to oversweating, injuries and broken tools. Btw, I've broken my PocketBoy 180 the very first time I've taken it to the woods. I was abusing it as much as I was abusing my BigBoy 360 not properly considering the fact that BigBoy's blade is around 1.5 times thicker than PocketBoy one. P.S. This video is actually a good response to any firesteel maniacs ("Matches or Bic lighter? Nah, only firesteel!"). It takes 30 minutes of struggling to make a fire in the cold wet woods (like in spring, when everything is soaken wet as of the melting snow) to adopt the "use everything which works" principle. Then suddenly you start to fulfil your kit with various firestarters (even the ones you can just buy on the gas station).

The lumber you use in the video is definitely more suitable for the Pocketboy, but the wood I buy locally comes from the bark, so it's a thicker piece. It was designed by rmj who does special forces tactical tomahawks. it's designed for combat, breaching, rescue, tearing through steel or pick axe through concrete in an emergency, and chopping fire wood. basically when your packing light and need a tool to do as much as possible. Versus a specialized hatched for bushcraft which breaks down further into hunting, chopping, and splitting hatchets. Kangee is a great bugout shit hits the fan tool. or just a general purpose tool. It does everything but when comparing to a tool that designed just for wood it's not going to compete very well.

I've been using folding saws for years in my work as a gardener on an almost daily basis. Started with the Laplander, never broke a blade on those. But buy the NATO blackened blades, they don't get a corrosion build up and become sticky with age. Then for a while tried the Silky. It's good but not better. Didn't like the whippy blade, bends too easily. I'm now using the Felco folding saw. Much better. Saws like a demon. And the handle is much better, especially with cold wet hands. Cheers, Everyone. I have several Silky saws, from the compact F-180 to the massive Katana-boy 650. Generally speaking, using a saw and a knife, you can harvest firewood with much less energy expense and in less time that with an axe. On group outings, we all have saws, the Silky Big-boy the most popular, and just one axe as group equipment. Groetjes uit het Zwitserse Jurageberchte.

@DTL Could be true. I'm talking more about 10 days in the bush. Let's say 5 days. I did not see them do that. Still this is the way to test your tools.
@StevanOutdoor
2 жыл бұрын
@DTL True. They don't claim to be bushcrafters or survivalists and they do mention it in a lot of their videos. They are very honest about 'just goofing around' doing these tests in their backyard and I'm fine with that. I often give them a like and they are entertaining to watch. The problem is that some viewers might take their advice seriously and do go into nature with just their Silky Toyboy. Or the viewers get the idea they need to save up for this expensive knife (a lot of expensive knives are promoted and very few budget options) instead of getting a budget knife and save up for a camping or bushcraft trip. I did and do challenge them to let me bring a budget option and do the stuff they do with the expensive one so people can compare. And I don't even like being on camera. I did advice them to take some courses maybe or arrange some 3 days challenge in the woods themselves. I could give that course but many others also can. It will probably be 4 days because all that camerawork will take up one day extra on a 3 day course. I did challenge them to participate in a 10 day bushcraft and survival course I developed with a school in Argentina and will start as soon as borders open up aka covid restrictions go down. The problem for them being that there will be very little time to videotape the course bcs they will be busy all the time. It will also be impossible to bring all their camera gear. They joke about Survival Lilly and I know that's also just goofing around but been watching Survival Lilly pretty much since the beginning and she did make a lot of mistakes. But she went out there and seen her in Canada, Africa, etc. and really depended on the knife out there in nature and developed a knife that would meet her criteria from her experience. It's a good knife. DBK took a TRC model and put a DBK stamp on it. If you put it in a big box with other TRC models and some Bark River models people would not recognize it. So for me there's a big difference between a knife (design) only tested in the backyard or a knife (design) tested in the actual outdoors over a longer period of time. I do advice to test a new knife you are gonna take in the outdoors first in your backyard and there's a lot of practice you can do in the backyard also. I do promote that but only as preparation for going into the bush for days, because being out there is the real test.

Like the Hultafors GK you can baton with it using a hammer. But I like the high saber grind on the Bahco and also the orange in the handle. I have to see if it's available here. It's another 'all you need' knife and the carbon steel is probably SK5. That would be my guess anyway.

Good video guys!!! Big fan of effective saws. Silky are effective and importantly efficient. The demo Silky vs. knife scenarios on fire prep, ignition, to establishment was good also for exhibiting (that in reality) all this feather-sticking and battoning (while good to know) is hardly the fundamental necessities for fire making. In certain circumstances more efforts in fact delaying sustainable fire establishment. Silky saw teeth are crazy sharp plus the spines are sharp as well for scraping shavings and sparking ferro rods. Food prep was doable... maybe not Julia Child in the wild presentation... however end resulting in good eats. The destruction 'shot' was pretty much 100% predictable upon impact. I do think targeting the saw was a good idea to showcase that impact energy transfer to the blade is a no-go for 'this tool' and tempering. As a follow-up: try shooting (and hitting) a few other folding saws. I'd try the Bahco Laplander for certain, and perhaps a much larger Silky like BigBoy 2000 just to see some comparative impact results.

Once I did try basic bushcrafting with that saw only, as I had no knife back then, and it is funny to see you do way better than I did (my first saw has no sharp spine and has very rough teeth).
