This was so fun and relaxing ... Mum belongs on the BBC without doubt (or possibly Crime Watch as it's always the seemingly innocent types 😉) and the Farm deserves so much more interaction from the public. Will continue to spread the word.

Loved the music 😂. I've seen sheep with it and they seem to enjoy them. The farmer dropped a small trailer full and it was like charge of the light brigade to get to them.

We had an old turnip chopper like yours years go, we put a pulley wheel on the shaft after removing the handle and ran a belt from the tractor pulley wheel. As youngsters we thought it was brilliant as it saved us having to turn the handle.

Someone mentioned an electric motor too Eddie! Sounds like a bloomin’ good idea to me

I caught sight of that root chopper when you were at the farm recently, then I came across an identical machine in Lacock last week. Could put a crank handle on it, then you could turn it which ever way you wanted. The one I saw was made by Bamfords of Uttoxeter. Presumably, the one mum had would have been driven by a pulley and flat belt. In my much younger days I used one which had two rotating cage rollers. These fed the roots into the chopper, but in doing so, knock any dirt an stones off. That was driven by an electric motor . Bear in mind that I'm talking about the mid 1950s. I love the way cows put their tongue out to take the beet from your hand.

Good morning, have y’all thought about a feed mixer tub? We have them call “haymoginizer” it’s purpose is you put all the feed in , hay silage almond hulls ect and it chops and blends them together then we have a shoot on the side to load it out out or feed down bunkers. Most of ours here are on trucks for dairies but there are smaller ones pulled by tractors. I personally don’t have one ( small hobby farm). But I’ve seem here used for sale too. Great video Ru, your expressions looking at the beets priceless.

Fodder beets are closely related to sugar beets and mangels. Cattle love potatoes too, so I used to buy seconds from a local grower. I don't grow enough for our beefers but feed beets, potatoes, pumpkins and sweetcorn stalks to the housecows and weaners pigs

That’s a lovely approach. The comments are getting me very curious about how easy these are to grow / how to grow them!

I love your mum's impressions of the cows and their beets! Looks like she has a farm sized Vitamix for the beets! She could get an electric motor and put a pully on the pto shaft of the chopper and it would work well, just a thought. Great video, thanks for sharing.

Eccentric doesn’t do it justice 😂 Electric motor would be surely a heck of a lot easier than pulling the tractor over every time too!

Up till recently I did exactly the same to feed my sheep either chopped in the barrow and spread on the field or through the chopper for housed ewes😊

What do you do now Mark? Or no more beets for you?
@markbutters5829

@@flankfarm Only a handful of sheep now to keep the grass down so no more fodder beet for me. The poor old cutter just stands up the corner of the shed. My friend grows acres of the beet to feed to their cattle and to be part of the crop rotation. The beet, haylage and straw from the cereal crops feed and bed yards full of cattle for finishing.

Hi Ru and everyone at Flank farm, i just love your videos mate, the make me quite emotional as i grew up on a sheep fold with my grandma but due to things i wont go into my family lost it all when i was a young boy.... my dream is to go back to working on the land but im old (44) and too unfit and skint now LOL.. But i wanted you to know that watching your videos of you and your mum on the farm really bring a happiness to me, yes my eyes leak sometimes but in a good way mostly (not the vid about the fire tho, that was so sad)... bigger and better in the future tho. Anyway, sorry to ramble on, i cant wait for next one.. Would love to see a video about you growing up on the farm, maybe a future video..hint hint.😊. Take care everyone, love to u all.
