TorBoy9 - No shade on the workers there...but they routinely price trash as if it was treasure...and treasure as...you catch the drift! It takes a lot of life experience with a broad range of manufactured items to develop a sense of their current value. Most workers there don't have a clue, which is why those of us who do can often find wonderful values.

You will love this! I always wanted a KA mixer for occasional use, but didn't want to pay the high price. I went to a local church bazaar about 10 yrs ago that sold many used items. A table for appliances had a covered (why? don't know) tall item that I thought was a blender I didn't need a blender but was nosy. As I lifted the cover, lo & behold, the same Hobart mixer as in your video! K5ss. Cream color. Perfect condition with the bowl & 3 standard beaters. Asking price was $10!!!!! Wow I snatched that heavy item up fast along w/the quilted cover. If the cover hadn't been on it, it would surely have been bought by the many dealers that raid the bazaars now to resell for profit.

Thank you for that tidbit of info! I just found a lift bowl KA5SS, marked only *"Heavy Duty,"* instead of "Classic" or "Artesian" and have been combing the internet looking for information on it. Your comment is much appreciated! Btw, I found this 5 qt lift bowl KA5SS with all the attachments at a local thrift store just a few days ago for an out the door price of $75, goop and grime at no additional cost 🤣 and scooped it up instantly! Immediately scrubbed it up when I got home and it looks and sound like new!!! I'll regrease it and replace the gaskets before I use it but, for now, it graces my kitchen counter as it's sisters, three lift head mixers in pale yellow, pale green and white, look on in envy! Thrifting is definitely the way to go. The prices I've paid for them were from $95, $60, an amazing $12 and this lift bowl KA for $75. Who needs groceries when you can buy a KA instead? 🤣

Had no idea about Hobart, so I'll look into it for future reference. Right now I have a $54 standmixer/blender combo. Besides the price it saves a bit of space which is a major premium in my tiny kitchen that is badly designed but can't do anything about. Still my cheapo off brand Chinese thing is pretty cool and allows me to keep on baking with arthritic hands.

Congratulations! The Hobart KitchenAid Mixers are definitely better than the Whirlpool ones. I have a KA KSM5 that I got in 1989, made my Whirlpool. Hobart sold the KA line in 1986, but they were still using the Hobart specs during the time my mixer was made. It runs like a tank and I love it. I think you will get many years of satisfaction from your mixer. I notice the whip has had some wires bent, so please be careful to use it only for cream, eggs, egg whites, etc. Sometimes people try to make cheesecakes with the whips, which can bend the wires. I recently got a great deal on a Kenwood Chef Titanium mixer, which included the blender and the food processor (a real food processor, not just a grinder attachment), for only $45 USD. It is 5 years old and the mixer had been used less than 10 times. So, good luck with your "new" KA. Speaking of cheesecake, maybe you'd like to make one with this? Thanks for showing us this.

@@IWantToCook You're very welcome. Your K5 mixer has a much nicer motor sound than the whining of the Pro 600s . Plus, those older machines were built very solidly. Many people wish they could get their hands on a Hobart KA mixer, so you've done very well, especially for only $30! It looks great, too, and you've done a great clean-up job. One never knows what can be found at thrift shops. I got a Lagostina 8" chef's knife for $3 that I like just as much as my $100 Wusthof knife. And a $350 Staub cast iron pumpkin-shaped pot for $15, with the stickers still on it, never used. I've subscribed to your channel, so I hope to see the KA in action. Thanks again.

In fact, your vintage kitchenaid is better than modern ones, as I understand it. Hobart manufactured them with metal gears. That's actually kind of a misconception. This model is the k5ss bowl lift which had since been discontinued. However it does utilize the same internal components that the current tilthead mixers are using. These models have always had a sacrificial nylon gear that was designed to strip out of the machine get overloaded. It just happened to be dark gray in color making it look like it was made out of metal. The current bow lift mixer models KitchenAid do actually have all metal gears.

It's probably more likely an 80s model since it says solid state. I have the pre solid-state k5a which this is basically the same thing that you have just with older Electronics. Interestingly the whip attachment you have is all stainless steel unlike the new ones where the top piece is coated aluminum and not dishwasher safe. Some of the early Whirlpool KitchenAid did come with that all stainless steel whip. I recently acquired one on a KitchenAid I got at an antique store and I do find it just a little bit awkward to put on the machine due to its narrow top so I do kind of understand the redesign. You can always buy stainless steel attachments from third-party sellers for these mixers in the whips typically follow the modern design.

Lol, believe it or not I’ve really scaled back. Nowadays I’m lucky if I hit a thrift twice in a month. I think the key is, I know what to look for. For example, I can scan a rack of pans and know what kind they are by their handle. I also intentionally shop at thrifts in wealthier areas with lots of inventory turnover. But beyond that, it’s often just luck. And that’s what makes it fun.

@@IWantToCookExactly! Hit more affluent neighborhood thrift stores and get familiar with telltale signs, like handles! Also, know what days their sales are on and hit the store the day BEFORE because a lot of people will put off their shopping till the actual sale day! Another hint is to scan the store from one direction then double back from the other direction. When shopping, a different perspective sometimes alerts you to items you may have missed eyeballing on the first run. And finally, always bring CASH! At times, the internet goes down and bank cards can't be used! You don't want to miss out on an incredible find just because you have to run to a bank for money! Happy thrifting!!! 😁

In reality, the gears *should be cleaned and regreased EVERY YEAR!* The gaskets can be wiped off and reused if not soggy, BUT, the *"FOOD GRADE GREASE"* needs to be changed *annually.* If you notice a greasy goop sliming from the silver band that runs horizontally around the machine, check it's color. Over time, the grease changes from a bright white, to yellow, to amber and when completely overused, to a black, dried out mess. For $11 for a small container of *"FOOD GRADE GREASE"* and a few minutes of tedious cleaning and washing of the gears, you can make your KA Mixer last forever! Skimping on the maintainance will lessen the efficiency, work the machine harder, wear down those $25 (each) internal gears, and lessen the lifetime. Don't let maintenance intimidate you. It's very simple to do! Many YT videos are available to walk you through the simple, but very important process!
