Bora understands Turkish, English and Spanish but does not speak. Why? His presence generates peace and harmony but, at the same time, he is surrounded by a certain halo of mystery... - One senses in him a strong openness to listen, to connect with the other. A humility manifested by a silence that leaves the protagonism to others. He does not speak but communicates by writing on his phone and showing the screen. He is also very expressive with his gestures and very smiling.
How did he come to this decision? On August 5, 2020 Bora decided to stop talking. For how long? He doesn't know. That day he woke up and realized that he didn't want to say anything anymore, that he was looking for something and that words were holding him back from getting it. He understood that the emptiness he was filling with words was limiting the potential of everything he could achieve in his life.
Some people have made similar decisions throughout history. Such is the case of John Francis, a U.S. environmentalist who took a vow of silence for 17 years to protest pollution. While he claimed he could go the rest of his life without speaking out, he decided to break the vow on Earth Day 1990 to share what he learned and raise awareness.
So Bora decided to go for a slow walk, as this has been a way of meditating for hundreds of years: keeping the body and mind present in each moment allows to access a state of concentration, create harmony and make each moment unique. His purpose was to walk from Istanbul (his city) to India. He started his journey on March 15, 2021 and walked 4756 kms over 9 months, until on the 215th day of walking something happened....
He was arrested by the military police of one of the countries he was visiting, accused of illegally entering the country, photographing a military base and espionage. Suddenly his trip became an experience of 23 hours a day in a very cold cell of 4 square meters. He was held incommunicado and while he received no violence, he received no sympathy or empathy, and no outside help of any kind. It was key for him to give himself completely to meditation and fasting. On the sixth day, without warning and without explanation, he was simply released and decided to return home to be with his family and process what he had experienced. He bears no grudge against the country that put him through this, nor against his captors. He sees them as opportunities for growth that fate put in his path.
To this day, Bora remains faithful to his vow of silence and his experience is a lesson for anyone who is willing to listen. He invites us to think about the importance of silence, something so scarce and yet so valuable in a world as convulsed as the one we live in. In times of conflict and chaos, Bora embarked on a personal path that is an example of life, a call to peace and introspection, to better connect with himself and his environment.
