@cholanraje1410

@Vishan Silva That's complete bullshit. Thor was not dispensed. I don't understand how no one was able to see the sadness in his transformation. It's what Thor has been on the inside carrying into the outside. He's always been a dumb, undisciplined brute. His life in Asgard kept that from coming to the fore, but once he lost it and everyone he loved from it, his personality was finally released out into the open. Him choosing to sit on his ass, drink and play Fortnite represents how he's never had any real discipline as a character. He's grown in an environment where he is used to winning every battle and used to having everything served to him on a royal platter. When he's forced to adapt to modern Earth life after the Snap, the inability to cope without being treated like a king WHILE also suffering the guilt turned him into a fatass. After losing his first REAL fight, he became so scared and vulnerable the only battles he could be a part of were on a television screen. Even when he yelled at Noobmaster69, you could see the he was trying to recreate the banter he used to have with his enemies. He's a man stuck in the past and unable to move into the future; he can't bring himself to leave New Asgard, but he can't muster the courage to step outside his own home and look at the people he failed either. Thor was not a joke in this movie. A few "Cheez Whiz" gags don't turn him into a joke. When Tony refused to let him take the gauntlet, you could see the team was worried for him. When Hulk came to bring him back into the team, you could also sense that HE felt depressed just looking at Thor. Sure, people get made fun of in the MCU-- Cap for being a grandpa, Tony for being a dick, Ant-Man for being unknown-- but you need to be the butt of jokes if you want to be an MCU character. That's why no one likes Captain Marvel-- she's been spared from those one-liners. The jokes are made to humanize the characters and the people making fun of them. That doesn't make the characters themselves a joke.
@tori6056

Cholan Raje couldn’t have said it better myself. I also felt like the jokes didn’t make Thor himself into a joke. I found myself chuckling at the a few of the jokes, but that just made it even more obvious to me that there was need for concern. The comedy highlighted just how far he’d fallen to me

absolutely agree, one of my favorite scenes was when Thor asked the team if he could do the snap. He was desperate to do something meaningful and helpful for a change. Chris' acting in that short moment was absolutely excellent. And although a lot of people interpret it differently, I like to think that Tony stopping Thor here ( and offering him breakfast in an earlier funny scene ) is actually Tony empathizing with Thor. Because Tony is someone who experienced a similar character arc, it felt really appropriate for Tony to be the first guy to show concern for his comrade and friend.

Thank you so much for this. I love Thor's arc in Endgame. It's both darkly comical and heartbreaking. I'm a big fan of laughing through tears. My motto is "laugh to keep from crying" and I feel humor can be found in almost any tragedy. It's all about perspective. Seeing Thor lean into humor as a defense mechanism to keep from having to process his grief or simply TRY anymore... it's massively relatable. Though it's played for laughs, him breaking down into tears like a child when his mother calls him out, made me want to weep. Because seriously, who more deserves a hug from his mommy than this guy after everything he's been through? I also like how at a loss his friends are to help him. There's nothing they can do but be tolerant since they've all had to find their own means of coping. Then there's the whole 'God' aspect to consider. For us humans, losing even one year of our lives to depression is a tragedy. But for someone who has a millenia to work it out? Not so much. How long was Valkyrie drinking herself to death on Sakar? So long that Hela's existence was literally wiped out of Asgard's memory. She looks at Thor and knows he just needs time. She's not overly concerned because... well to her it's not a big deal and has only been 5 years. A blink to their kind. If this was the end of Thor's journey in the MCU, then I might have been disappointed. But because it's not, because I know he's going to get over this slump and find a new purpose for himself, I quite enjoyed this exploration of the character. Besides, he still got to be a badass in battle despite his rotund figure
@666melodeath666

Personally think its a natural progression of his Character after that. Being “King” was this Destiny thrusted upon him by birth and when he gets it they’re immediately attacked by Thanos. When he gets Stormbreaker and had a chance to kill Thanos he was consumed by Revenge and not the greater good. He failed, he has truly failed everyone not just his people but failed his role as King of Asgard and Protector of Midgard. After killing Thanos in Endgame with no more battles or ways to make up for his mistakes he becomes aimless. Thor was always the Party dude it makes sense hes a Depressed Alchoholic Loser now if he was some sulking emo dude it would be too jarring. It fit Hawkeye better to be the Revenge fueled obsessive not Thor. The whole point of Thor’s character is to be worthy and he believes he isn’t for failing the people. When he talks to his mother knowing she’ll die the same day with his mother not wanting to know the Future. His mother accepting whatever the future holds makes Thor accept the past. He accepts his mother’s death along with the Gone Asgard. He is ready for the Future no matter what it holds. Thor realizes Failure is not the end He takes back Mjolnir to prove to himself that he is still worthy. Even if he wasnt the Warrior he used to be he still volunteered to sacrifice his life using the Gauntlet. He was willing to Fight Thanos with all his got. Failure does not mean the end if you try you can still be worthy. Hulk however was super disappointing

I think people's frustrations come from the fact that his arc is still incomplete. What with Endgame being a definite end for many of the original Avengers story arcs. As I watched the movie I did think to myself, "Uhh, I hope they don't leave us with a spiritually/mentally broken Thor by the end" because even though it does reflect reality of what happens to people who lost a lot in life, we still want our heroes' sendoffs to be glorious and fitting for the heroes they are. So yes, the fact that it seems Chris Hemsworth is prepared to play Thor for more movies makes me feel better. But I also do have to say... Cap being worthy does diminish a bit of what makes Thor special.

This is exactly how I feel. This was one of my favorite arcs in the MCU. Seeing that even literal gods that look like Chris Hemsworth go through slumps, and sometimes feel like they are not good enough anymore, made Thor feel more human and made me feel less alone for going through the same thing. And relatable characters is what made Marvel so loved all the way back since the first Fantastic Four comic.

I liked what they did with Thor and professor Hulk, it was hilarious. But sometimes it was just too much for me personally. I think they should have chosen one of these radical character changes for this movie. Maybe they could have saved the professor hulk arc for the next movie. In endgame, banner could've gone full smash mode when he (SPOILER!) heard the news about Natasha, only realising he has to gain full control after Tony's sacrifice. Still a great movie though.
@politereminder6284

But He needed to maintain his Professor Hulk stature in order to do the first snap and bring everybody back. We've already seen Hulk be the Trump card for the avengers. That would have been too samey samey. Doing Prof Hulk now enables them to take the character into other incarnations later. The Natasha thing was sad, but they never got time to grow into deep love. Maybe he will get another chance at true love later, then he can hulk out properly into worldbreaker.

Thor before Endgame: "I'm gonna save the day, cause that's what heroes do (I don't remember the exact quote)" "I'm gonna get down and take that giant eyebrow off your face" "Thanos is just another bastard in a line of people who've tried to kill me and failed" Thor in Endgame: *(Calls his hammer)* "I'm still worthy (says that with a genuinely surprised tone)" "I'm not afraid of him (says in clear denial)" "Please, just let me do something right for once" That last one...it just gets me so much, and its such a subtle yet powerful line with complex and tragic implications. Thor's character arc makes perfect sense, he feels like he let everyone down, that it's his fault that half the universe died. And...yeah..he's kinda right. Everyone throws shit at Quill and says he's useless or idiotic because of the consequences his actions brought upon everybody else during IW, and I'm not gonna tell you that you're wrong if you think that (even though you're wrong cause that mistake is totally in character and is one of the emotional highlights of the movie). But Thor brought this upon himself. All jokes and memes aside...he could have gone for the head, he could have gone for the arm, but he didn't. He didn't cause his priority wasn't to save the universe, his priority was to let Thanos know who killed him, to revel in his pain, and to make sure he (Thor) had his revenge. If people don't see how clever is the arc of him shutting himself down, ashamed of his failure. Idk what to tell you. And yes, a lot of times his transformation has a comedic tone to it, but...this is the MCU. Have you been asleep for the last 11 years? They've always combined humor with drama, sometimes not that well, others really good (like in this occasion).

I find it very interesting to watch Thor go from a smug, everything-is-easy-for-me, spoiled man child who always expects to win to someone who loses everything. Everything. We get to see the self-doubt that lies beneath someone who never had to try too hard. When push comes to shove and he fails to save his family, his friends, his home world, and ultimately half of existence, it almost proves to him that he was never that special to begin with. He gives up all hope that he deserves the adulation he had received in the past. When his hammer actually comes back to him, he gets a glimmer of hope that maybe he does have the worthiness after all. Much more intriguing to to watch a superhero have insecurity and find some inner strength to pick himself up and start again.

@@jacobmejialevy5 Thank you! It's annoying when people abuse others who just want to express how they feel. As for me, I see both why it DOES and it DOESN'T work. DOES-It illustrates his depression incredibly well, as he is showing various symptoms of PTSD, from denial, to compensating with jokes, to avoiding the issue, unable to cope with the past, doubting his worth and acting like nothing's wrong. I think the Russos got that part spot on. Also gaining weight is not an uncommon thing with depression as people can often fill that empty void in themselves by indulging in gluttony. Not saying that all people depressed but in some, it happens. DOESN'T-The depression isn't portrayed as serious in my opinion and it comes across more as a joke to others. I wasn't laughing at Thor's new state but rather saddened by his transformation. Depression is NOT funny. And there are several ways you could have illustrated it better. Maybe Thor decides to look after the New Asgardians that were injured in the Thanos attack and dedicates all his time to that and forgets to help himself through his time of grief. Within the space of a week, Thor lost his father, his hammer was destroyed, his long-lost sister started a chain of events which led to him losing his eye and throwing the kill-switch on his entire planet. Then one of his ships got raided & blown up, and he watched his newly-redeemed brother being murdered in front of his face. He mustered up the strength to fight back, but arrived at the critical moment a few seconds too late and aimed his shot a few inches south of what was necessary. As a result, he witnessed the death of half of everyone left that he still cared about...... PTSD much?? I think I'd be a lot worse than depressed drunk & fat if I went though what he did!

I think at times the fat jokes were a bit gratuitous and I can totally see where some people might take offense to that BUT with that said I agree with the statements made in the video. I think putting him in this situation was a great idea. Just making him his typical macho, bravado self would have made it dull imo and to have really hit rock bottom emotionally was smart. I also think having him interact with his mom was a great dosage of estrogen to this testosterone heavy film (with all due respect to Widow and Nebula). To see a tough guy like him find his confidence again through the encouragement of his mother is counter to a lot of macho story-telling where that usually comes from a paternal figure and I think that was a great move on the Russo's part to have that. great stuff as always, Cap!

Endgame and Infinity War "continuing Ragnarok's arc" is the weirdest thing I've heard in a while. The Russos seemed hellbent on cancelling everything Watiti had added. Thor learns that he doesn't need a hammer? He gets another one, and then goes back in time to get the old one back! Turns out he is indeed the god of hammers rather than thunder. Thor accepts his role as king? He gives that up. Thor gains knowledge symbolized by the loss of an eye? He gets a glass eye so that the audience can forget about that. Hell, even small details like the new haircut went away. I wouldn't be surprised if the next appearence of the other Ragnarok characters is them unceremoniously dieing. Thor losing hope and becoming miserable is fine, but that being used exclusively as comic relief or for a lame pseudo-arc isn't. His mother literally stated the theme on his face, then he regressed by having to "prove to himself" that he was still worthy (something he had grown out of 2 movies before).
@xandercesari9773

Exactly! I thought I was taking crazy pills when the video said that Ragnarok-Infinity War-Endgame make a complete arc for the character. The whole point of Ragnarok is that he gave up that roving warrior lifestyle to be truly responsible for his people and he became a king. He also winds up humiliated and nearly powerless on a junk planet yet he spends the entire movie not giving up on getting back to his people and doing good. In Endgame he just gives it up. In Ragnarok his people are literally decimated and he escapes with a mere handful yet stays strong to find them a new home and lead them. In Endgame he was just like "eh half the people is basically no one, I give up". It really does feel like Infinity War and Endgame went out of their way to undo the arc of Ragnarok. If Ragnarok had never existed I would probably have loved his arc in these two movies. But Ragnarok existed and was awesome so no take backs Marvel!

Hemsworth's ability to do comedy and tragedy at the same time is amazing. And I don't just mean in the same movie, or in the same scene, but even in the same line. Like in Infinity War, "Well he's never fought me twice," got a laugh, but his delivery and body language conveyed an immense amount of pain at the same time. Also, Taika's next MCU movie is gonna be Valkyrie. I just know it in my gut. She debuted in his movie, she's great, Tessa Thompson's great, Thor passed the torch to her in Endgame, and Taika himself plays Korg. No solo series in the MCU has gotten a fourth entry yet, not even Iron Man, so I think this would be a great way for Taika to continue the spirit of Ragnarok without breaking that trend. Oh, and the Valkyrie movie's gonna have Throg. A frog's gonna stumble upon the shattered remains of Mjolnir, pick up a chunk, and become Throg. Wild speculation, but I'll look super cool if I'm right.

I get pissed off at people who just see Fat Thor in Endgame as just a joke, and that it was a degradation of his character, when in reality it was a dark point in his life. The man let go, and put up a horrible facade of recovering from his loss of a chance to save the universe+his personal family losses. (Facading through his pain is pretty consistent for his character, remember he did this in Infinity War, as well as arguably Ragnarok as well) It's not until his talk with his mother that he regains confidence in himself, and him taking back Mjolnir proves that regardless of his lying to himself of his true pain, regardless of his multiple failures, and regardless of him being at his lowest point, he is STILL worthy, and that he hasn't lost what made him Thor in the first place.
