Togo has over the years capitalized on its small size to turn into West Africa’s largest trade hub. Thanks to modernization reforms, in just a few years, Lomé port has rapidly increased its cargo volumes from 300,000 TEUs in 2013 to 1.9 million TEUs in 2020, astonishingly overtaking Nigeria to become West Africa’s busiest port and a vital node connecting the region to global markets. In contrast, things have stagnated at Nigeria's largest port in Apapa, Lagos which remains hamstrung by a combination of decades of inefficiency and red-tape leaving room for corruption to fester. Like any place rooted in arbitrage, Togo indirectly benefits from its neighbors’ challenges, whether political instability, trade bans, or congested port infrastructure. This means that Nigeria’s loss has proven to be Togo’s gain as the small West African nation doubles down on reform and investment plans to transform itself into a pivotal transit hub in the Gulf of Guinea.
