Most Indian toilets just have a bucket of water and a cup. There is not enough flow or pressure to clean the anal region so people use their fingers and then because faeces clings to underneath the finer nails spread diseases like gastroenteritis and cholera under their nails. Soap and towels are rare India is terrible and notorious for this lack of concern with hygiene. Don't think for a second India is anywhere near Japanese or Korean levels. Most Indians don't care about their fellow Indians.

THE GREAT BIDET MYSTERY - II A classical bidet is basically a lavatory with running water, anatomically designed for comfort (in an elongated shape, to be sat upon or astride, according to convenience, leaving room for your hand), situated at a conveniently lower level than a face and hands lavatory, for the purpose of allowing you to wash the lower parts of your body whenever necessary, and that is why it is located near the toilet seat, but certainly not in order for you to transit from there directly to the bidet without previous hygiene, as many seem to think. It's as simple as that, but you will also find many other possible uses for it, as your good sense dictates, which hopefully will not be to wash your dishes or your baby in it or to fill it with earth in order to plant vegetables. There are no precise how-to-use instructions that you should expect, other than the dictates of the reaching limits of your hands and hopefully your common sense on hygienic practices, such as NEVER using a bidet for washing your rear end on leaving the toilet seat without a previous thorough cleaning with normal toilet paper, exactly as you do at home (how it is possible at all that so many people and pseudo-tutorials foreign to the normal use of the bidet conceive of it as a substitute (!) for toilet paper simply leaves me dumbfounded). You follow the use of toilet paper by washing the whole zone that was exposed to the paper itself and any droplets splashed out or in aerial suspension from the immediate vicinity of the toilet pit, with one hand, as you do in a whole body shower, using soap and water -- preferably running water, very much as you do when you wash your face or hands in the appropriate sink if you're not an excessively conservationist zealot -- then you dry yourself with a small towel, or paper towel, or whatever you prefer for your own individual use. Then you wash your hands, return to the social world and wonder at the thought that anyone can possibly think of water jets directed at one's bottom from the same pit one's waste goes into -- even if the mechanical marvel that squirts is not randomly malfunctioning and does stay in its protective, hopefully clean, cave while one is not looking and one's elbow does not accidentally hit the wrong button (I shudder to think of what happens if it does at the wrong moment) -- as a great and wondrous improvement over its simple non-tech ancestor that has been in practically universal use in the Euro-PIGS urban centers for longer than living memory can recall.

What North Americans don't get is that a bidet does not replace toilet paper, you still use toilet paper THEN you wash. It's not about saving money it's about hygiene! I grew up with bidets and there if your house doesn't have one you won't ever be able to sell it.

In california water droughts are frequent and long. They charge more and fine people for using to much water. Even if we have good jobs you can get increase as high as 15% and bills being over 200 a month alone for water during a drought. They go as far as threatening to completely shut off your water in some rare cases.

I use a "wet & dry" cloth system - which I wet in the sink to clean - I use 2 white cloths so I can tell when I am still not fully clean - so I rinse and repeat until the cloth is white - then to finish I rinse & dry. I clean the cloth's after each use and hang them to dry. The cloths last years and cost nearly nothing. I never run out of toilet paper and never have to go out to get any - so I am not contributing to deforestation (even though they do have Bamboo Toilet paper) As for having to go when not at home? I use wet toilet paper and try not to wipe too hard (or the TP breaks down) then I dry.
