Vegeta has always been my favorite character in the Dragon Ball series. But one noticeable thing about him is that he can never seem to catch a break when it comes to defeating the main villain. It seems that Vegeta is brought up to be powerful only to be made an example of from the new villain. He is a character who suffers from the Worf effect? What is the Worf effect?
"It's a quick way to show how dangerous one of your unknown characters is? Simple, make them do well or win in a fight with a character that the audience already knows is tough. This establishes them as willing to fight and marks them as sufficiently dangerous."
