Regular and even audiophile vinyl pressing these days are inferior in quality to those of the 70s and 80s. About 40% of my vinyl purchases get returned either because of groove distortion, non-fill, warps or deep scratches. I never had these quality issues in the 80s, 90s, and up to 2009 when I was buying lots of dance/dj music 12-inch and remix singles. This resurgence of the vinyl format has been more negative than positive in my view.

I've always hated vinyl records, even when I was a kid, that is why I tried to make a tape recorder in the fourth grade, I didn't succeed obviously, but at least I tried! The ticks, and pops, plus surface noise, and the eccentricity of vinyl records drove me (when I had enough money), to purchase a used teak A1500U, reel-to-reel tape recorder, but I could easily still hear the difference between "source and tape", the dreaded tape hiss. In 1978 as an engineering consultant for the "Great American Sound Co., I traveled to Japan to visit GAS dealers and the Tokyo Electronics Show. In the Sony booth at that show, I saw for the first time, a model PCM-1, 12-bit digital processor playing music from the video track displaying thousands of black and white, undulating bits on the monitor, from the same SL-8200 Beta max VCR I had at home, I had to own one of these! In 1983 I attended an AES meeting featuring Marshall Buck who was presenting his new "coaxial two-way" loudspeaker he had designed for Cerwin-Vega! In his demonstration he was utilizing a "vocal-only" recording of a female singer that sounded fantastic with an incredible "dynamic range" and no background hiss. Immediately after Marshall's demonstration, I walked up and asked him what equipment was playing back his recording of this singer? He pointed to this diminutive silver box, and said I'm using a Sony PCM-F1, 16-bit Digital Audio Processor and a VCR. I said how much for the PCM-F1. He said $1,500.00, and I said sold! I built a portable recording rig that included the PCM-F1 and other custom-made equipment that I utilized for various musical performance recordings made on location and I won an Emmy for an outdoor performance of the opera Faust! I've been a digital advocate ever since, if you wish to learn more about my current endeavors, search KZitem with the following: "JBL SYNTHESIS CREATOR", and ALSO: "HOWTOHOMELIFE". Doesn't Vinyl also have a much more limited frequency range? I'm only beginning to learn mixing and mastering but the first thing they touch on is how you have to cut out the low frequencies if you're mixing for vinyl.
@maxvahling3832
3 жыл бұрын
I think that's because lower frequencies need deeper and/or wider grooves (I forget which) and they're not really needed because a good vinyl setup will make up for bass loss. (Must be wider - that would explain the 12" single format.) Anyway, there's a trade-off between sound frequency range, loudness and the amount of music you can get on an LP.

I grew up with vinyl records, and nostalgics seem to forget how we all used to dream of a better format where the grooves didn't wear down, the discs wouldn't warp in the heat or scratch or skip when anyone danced, not to mention dust gathering on the needle by the end of a side, and the inner track of an LP sounding crap because the grooves were too close together. Then there's the cost of having to buy new a stylus regularly, and making sure the speed was right. Also, we forget that records would be mastered or pressed badly, especially by lesser-known artists: recording engineers' hearts would sink when they heard how vinyl ruined their mixes. How many distorted-sounding records from the 60s are we stuck with because they wiped the master tapes once they were released on vinyl!

Excellent overview. I only wish you'd touched more on the overall fidelity of the captured audio for the analog process vs digital. The limit of our hearing around 22Khz. Nyquist's thereom suggests a sample rate of ~44Khz to accurately capture that data. So, DACs and speaker limitations aside, is ANYTHING lost in the conversion from analog to digital in terms of the fidelity of the audio?
@robin_hare

These are all excellent points, but what do you think about vinyl's relevance in the loudness wars? Record companies compress albums to death for the radio/CD/streaming master, then hold the dynamic master hostage on the more expensive format. One justifiable reason to buy vinyl seems to be to listen to a much more dynamic master of your favourite album, right?
@TheBunkhouseStudios
3 жыл бұрын
yes, ironically because vinyl can't handle transients and dynamic range as well as digital, it's become a platform for more dynamic masters as music can't be as heavily limited in the same way as it can on digital. More dynamic masters on digital would sound technically superior, but because the increased range is there with digital that usually means it's used to make music as loud as possible these days (and therefore less dynamic.) It's kind of silly really!

love vinyl because it's where engineers have the freedom to master properly. But there are also people doing the same on cds. CD actually has more depth than vinyl and is cleaner, and cheaper. In short, there is music that is preferable to have on cd and other on vinyl. I have both formats. And I love it when I'm forced to buy an LP. LOL

I really miss reading about wow and flutter and hearing it between the pops and clicks. I'm kidding of course, I don't miss anything about vinyl. The dynamic range of digital is certainly superior, and if you are a jazz fan it's wonderful. I remember buying a DBX 3bx dynamic range expander to attempt to get that range. It never worked well though, I could always hear the expander "breathing". As a player in a band, nothing came close to the amazing sound of live instruments.

Totally agree! I think what a lot of people attribute to the better sound of vinyl is often in the mastering, as the increased range of digital allows for more 'brickwall' limiting, decreasing dynamic range (ironically.) But if music is mastered well digital is technically far superior.

I’m especially interested in well recorded rock and Prog records from the era of vinyl: Steely Dan, early Rush, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Yes. Vinyl sounds different. I live with the contradiction.
@TheBunkhouseStudios

this is completely legitimate and understandable. In the end if you get enjoyment and satisfaction from it that's what matters. Music is hugely subjective and that extends to the way it was recorded and the formats it's reproduced on. Yes on a purely technical level CD and digital formats are objectively better but subjectively some people prefer the way vinyl or other formats sound.

I’m a music fan and I don’t like listening to the quality of my music degrading as it moves towards the inner grooves. Imagine if every time you watched a movie it started in 4k and by the time you were half way through it was in 480p. You know I have vinyl, they are a pain in the ass, some sound better than my digital files, some sound worst. But I like them as a collector item. I like having old pressings from my favorite albums. Also what matters is the mastering. Some digital modern mastering is kind of awful. Some is great. A common example is the Beatles stereo remastering from the 80s. It's awful imo. The original stereo masters are much better (with some exceptions). But then again you can get some of the mono Beatles CDs that sound incredible.
@TheBunkhouseStudios

I understand the collecting aspect. I prefer CD's for having a physical collection, but it's the same mindset - there's something very personal about having a physical collection, and the stories that might be attached to your copy of each album. The Beatles remasters are awful! Totally ruins the albums and it pains me that some people will experience such great music that way! Mastering in general for CD and digital mediums is technically better due to the increased dynamic range and higher fidelity, but arguably that led to the 'loudness wars' and ironically decreased dynamic range because of that. Vinyl has to be mastered differently because it can't handle transients and low end information very well, but again ironically this can lead to more dynamic masters (even though the medium has less dynamic range) because of the limitations.

I still prefer a good vinyl sound because it feels warmer to me. Trouble is, you don't always get those amazing mixes these days. CDs sound better than ever, but LPs are hit-and-miss. I think it's not so much about the player technology - there's high and low-end stuff on both sides. For me, it's mostly about the records and how the recordings were made. CDs used to sound worse than the first mp3s, partly because they were cut from LP mixes and lacked dynamic, partly because digital recording just wasn't that good yet. That's how CDs got their bad rep. They earned it. Vinyl suffered from it, too, because a lot of 80s' LPs were made from digital recordings. It was a bad time to be a music fan.

totally agree with your point that it's less about the medium and more about how the record was recorded. As a person that collects vinyl, and CDs and collecting music in other nefarious ways... I have no illusions about the quality of the two, in fact. Unless you are a DJ mixing a hardcore record, you'll never really notice the difference. And yes everything you have said is true and I have heard this argument since CDs came out and only the blind rabid fanboy could possibly and idiotically claim vinyl is better sound quality... I mean it is obvious, grooves cut into an object by a needle or a laser scanning millions of bits of data on a 5" circle. That can hold as MP3s a few hundred songs or in a higher format the album in near perfect replication of the band performing the music and the engineer boosting the quality of the recording eq using computers.... And yes, PVC is toxic, but so are cigarettes and drugs and alcohol.... 😅
@TheBunkhouseStudios

agree with your points. Although i'd say I 100% hear a difference with vinyl. A CD inherently doesn't have 'a sound' and neither does a CD player, it's a perfect digital representation of a recording, so the only variable is the speakers and the listening environment. Whereas with vinyl the quality of the pressing, condition of the vinyl, quality of the turntable and needle and cartridge will all have an impact on the sound. All these things give vinyl 'a sound' which granted some people like, but whether you do or not there's a very audible difference to my ears
@artblack01

@@TheBunkhouseStudios That's not 100% true, a CD and Vinyl are both created with a digital representation of recorded sound, yes both contain the exact same signal source, you can look this up, even if recorded onto a reel to reel it is still transferred to a digital source for replication. The difference is truly the quality is lost on vinyl because of groove imperfections in vinyl as well as having to lower bass frequencies so that the needle doesn't jump out of the groove. Hence, why you can hear a difference of any kind between the two.
