Did I miss something? Something about Deanna Durbin being a cheap woman? She was the opposite - a true lady with a splendid voice who rejected the phony nonsense of Hollywood for a long lasting marriage and family, on a farm outside of Paris. How is this cheap? She was a lovely person whose higher values relieved her of the sinister lure of Hollywood. Hats off, Miss D. Also, there were rumors about her lack of public appearances - that she went into hiding because she got fat and lost her youthful beauty. She finally succumbed to the challenge and allowed one photo of her at an advanced age. She looked exactly the same - pretty, slender, bubbling with vitality - a representative of an earlier, more innocent time.

In this case "cheap" refers to the bargain salary at which Universal was able to sign her her to a contract. It was just over $15,000 a year. Her first film at Universal, Three Smart Girls, made her a star and had box office sales of $1,635,000 against a budget of $326,000. Her films became big earners for the studio and reportedly saved it from bankruptcy. Of course, she was able to negotiate far better terms as her popularity grew but initially she was a "cheap" investment that paid huge returns for the company.

In the Soviet Union, Dinah Durbin was treated with great affection. Many older people in our country remember her films with gratitude. The actress's performance of Russian songs was accompanied by applause in cinemas - not only in the 40s, but even in the 90s, when Durbin's films were shown in Moscow film clubs. It is no coincidence that the American press called her “the queen of Moscow screens.” When, half a century after Dina’s first film, the Melodiya company released a record with recordings of the best musical fragments from the actress’s films, Durbin was very surprised. It was a discovery for her that she was not only remembered in the USSR, but had ever been known at all. “Doesn’t Deanna Durbin know how popular she was in our country? - wrote Gleb Skorokhodov. - She doesn’t know what a wild success one of her first paintings, “One Hundred Men and One Girl,” had in our country back in the pre-war years?! How did the audience sing along with the actress when she sang in “Spring Waltz”?! She doesn’t know how they listened to her “Wicket” and “Why and Why” with bated breath at the very height of the war in “His Butler’s Sister”?! And they applauded during the show at the Metropol, in three halls of which one picture was played “back and forth”... They applauded and admired its Russian accent, sincerity and inspiration, and, of course, the songs that were “not recommended” for performance in those years. She also doesn’t know about the queues that lined up after the war for “trophy” films with her participation?! In markets and on trains in those days, homemade photographs of Dina clutching a crimson rose to her chest were in great demand... She doesn’t know, of course, how we sympathized with her when we read in our newspapers about the capitalist sharks who squeezed out of our beloved actress all the juice - our press didn’t skimp on paint! - and at the age of 27, they threw her out of Hollywood. One thing consoled me then: what if the actress finds her happiness outside of Hollywood?”

A great dinosaur fighter, a lovely girl with a lovely voice. So glad she had, a happy ending which was so much better than that of her contemporary Judy Garland who was destroyed by the demands of the film industry. Low cost not cheap.

She was a good actress, but Universal didn't give her better roles. She could have played the role Yvonne de Carlo played with Burt Lancaster, and would have played the character successfully. which would have improved her career.

Good video but sorry you've caved to the woke affectation of calling actresses actors. Part of the irrational, supposedly feminist crusade to eliminate all feminine words and force women to use the male terms. "Actress" is one of our language's noblest, most revered words, more so than "actor". It was good enough for everyone from Sarah Bernhardt to Meryl Streep, but not for a supporting player on a soap opera today, who insists on late-night chat shows that she is an ACTOR. I know, activists say "well, we don't say doctoress!". Yes, that's because the sex of the person who removes your gall bladder makes no difference, but the sex of the person who plays Juliet or Hedda Gabler generally does. Eschewing "actress", you are forced here to substitute the phrase "woman actor." Let's drop this woke charade and return "actress" to the place of honor and veneration it deserves. :-)

@@stache1954 Who didn't like her in the industry? Producer Joe Pasternak, who was credited with discovering her, stated in his memoir that he visited her several times following her retirement and would be always be interested in making a film with her if she ever wanted to make one. Jack Cummings sought her for the female lead in his 1953 film KISS ME KATE and only offered it to Kathryn Grayson after Durbin refused. Lerner and Lowe sought her out for the female lead in MY FAIR LADY. The Theatre Guild, which was producing Rodgers and Hammerstein's OKLAHOMA! for Broadway in 1943, sought her for the female lead. Where's the dislike iin the "industry"?
