I would say that part of the answer to that question is that the English word "empire" means two things that are split in various other languages, such as German or Dutch - "monarchy ruled by an Emperor" and "large realm of disparate possessions", the latter being a far vaguer term than the former. The confusion sets in because some empires were both, while some fall decidedly in the former (the late Byzantine Empire) or the latter (the Dutch Empire) category. But even in English, Britain's empire is often used in the sense of "Britain's overseas possessions". In fact, one might argue that Britain itself wasn't even part of the British Empire.

Actually for a long time there was only one imperial title in Europe, the roman one, diffrent countries lay claim to it. The byzantines, ottomans, the holy roman empire, the russian tsardom, the french empire, the german empire the austrohungarian empire. They all lay claim to the same imperial title. Britain changed that when the British monarchs proclaimed themselves emperors or India which opened the floodgates to everyone and his uncle styling themselves emperors.

This is a good explanation as to why the British didn't have an Emperor even as an Island Empire, despite being similarly styled to Imperial Japan. The obvious extra and very important factor that you ought to have mentioned is that Britain theoretically held its Indian possessions until the 1857 mutiny as holders under the Mughal Emperor. So with a historic emperorship, dissolved only a dozen or so years earlier, open for the claiming, the preciswnr was there. I don't think 'lesser value citizens who could be bossed around' was at play as much as justification by tradition, tho' it was doubtless a factor. (You did miss vanity too as a factor). It was mentioned slightly during this video but not very concretely: An Emperor is simply needed where Kings have to be governed over. The Byzantine Emperor existed because he saw himself as a formal King of those Kings who ruled a part of the former Roman Empire. The Austria-Hungarian Empire was simply a nation consisting of multiple nations, one with a King. If you have to outrank this King: An Emperor is needed. The most popular example for this system is the German Empire. There were dozens of Kings in this realm. The German Emperor had to be an Emperor - otherwise he would have never been the head of a nation with multiple Kings. Great Britain never had this issue in the first place. That made the rank slightly idiotic.
@thomasbravado
Жыл бұрын
Then you have France, where the title of Emperor of the French was meant to imply that Napoleon was the leader of the French people but did not own France as the French kings had under feudalism. Similarly, the title of Roman Emperor was at first supposed to indicate the leader of the Roman Republic, and the emperors preferred not to be associated with the kings of Rome who had ruled it before it was a republic.
@AaronOfMpls
11 ай бұрын
And as I mentioned in another comment, the word "emperor" itself comes from the Latin _imperator_ -- literally, "commander". In the Roman Republic, an _imperator_ was someone who'd been given _imperium,_ official command/authority over a particular military or government entity. Later, it became a "victory title" given to military commanders; Julius Caesar himself got it this way. From Augustus on, the emperors co-opted it as one of their multiple totally-not-a-king titles (alongside _Caesar_ and _princeps_ ("first") and such) to bolster their own authority.
@richeybaumann1755
10 ай бұрын
Notably, though, he was never the Emperor of Germany, but the German Emperor, which meant that he was technically _primus inter pares_ , the first amongst equals. As the King of Prussia, he, in theory at least, simply held the highest status of the kings.
@Saurophaganax1931
9 ай бұрын
Further worth mentioning is that, despite being declared "Dictator for life" Julius Caesar never adopted the title of "emperor". That being said, while the emperors that followed him shied away from being associated with kings; Caesar to the contrary wanted to become king really badly. To the point that he started wearing purple all the time and had a big gold encrusted chair installed at the front of the senate just for him that was definitely not a throne winky face. But we all know how that ended. His dreams of monarchy died in a pool of blood on the senate floor.

As the video points out, Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom had the potentially awkward position of being at the same time the head of state of the most powerful country on earth at the time and holding a title that was outranked by other monarchs on the European continent (Austria, Russia, France (for a time) and, later, Germany) who held the title of emperor. The awkwardness was compounded by the fact that, in due course, she would have a daughter (also named Victoria) and a grandson (William / Wilhelm) who would be respectively empress-consort and emperor of the newly-unified Germany. And having the ‘Grandmother of Europe’ curtsy to her own descendants because of a point of protocol would never do! Ultimately, it was the then-PM, Disraeli, who navigated the problem brilliantly by suggesting that Victoria become Empress - of India. This gave the Queen the title she wanted and solved the protocol problem but avoided the problem of the British distaste at having an ‘Emperor’ / ‘Empress’ rule over them. This was achieved at the expense of the people of India, who had no say in the matter.

Something he doesn't mention - Emperor was also an existing title in India. The Mughal Emperor was deposed in 1857 and Victoria took the title in 1876. On independence in 1947, the Emperor title was dropped and the title King of India and King of Pakistan was used until both countries became republics.

Monarchs used to have many very different and seemingly contradictory titles. For anyone wondering, India did not cease being a monarchy upon independence, but instead became the Union (or Dominion) of India, with George VI as King of India until the abolition of the monarchy in India in 1950. Also mostly all these Colony's still hold Queen Elizabeth as Head of State, Even though she just reigns but doesn't actually Rule. Knowing the Roman aversion to kings, shrewd Octavius styled himself Augustus of First Citizen, with his only distinguishing mark being a purple stripe on his toga. Although his power was absolute, it maintained the charade of the emperor still being of the people. Augustus was the title used by all subsequent Roman Emperors.
@AaronOfMpls

And the word "emperor" itself comes from the Latin _imperator_ -- literally, "commander". In the Roman Republic, an _imperator_ was someone who'd been given _imperium,_ official authority over a particular military or government entity. Later, it became a "victory title" given to military commanders; Julius Caesar himself had gained it this way. From Augustus on, the emperors co-opted it as one of their multiple totally-not-a-king titles (alongside _Caesar_ and _princeps_ and such) to bolster their own authority.

Also, declaring oneself as “Emperor” was a matter of being recognised as such by other countries. Prior to Napoleon, the title of Emperor in Europe was strongly associated with the Holy Roman Empire. For this reason, to be recognised as “Emperor” you had to be (theoretically) elected, rather than just declaring yourself one (in practice the Habsburgs just used their influence to get themselves elected each time). Nevertheless, Spain is a good example of this particularity of European imperial dignity: while Charles V was indeed called Emperor in Spain (as Charles I) after his election as Holy Roman Emperor, his heir was only considered king (King Phillip II), since he wasn’t the Habsburg who ruled in the German territories. This tradition persisted until Napoleon, and afterwards the title of emperor was used more freely, such as with Napoleon III, the emperors of Brazil and Mexico (outside Europe, but still held by Europeans) or the creation of the German Empire.

@Neptune's Daddy That's also why Austria declared itself to be an Empire. The Austrian king had previously been Emperor of the HRE, and when he saw the writing on the wall, he abdicated but still wanted to be an emperor, so he just declared Austria to be an empire instead. Which kinda makes more sense really as Austria was a multiethnic empire whereas the HRE was by then essentially the German nation (granted a nation in spirit, certainly not a unified state).

During the Middle Ages, the title _Emperor_ meant the _official_ successor to the authority of Rome. Though there could only theoretically be one Emperor in the world at the time, the title was claimed by Charlemagne and his successors in the Holy Roman Empire and the rulers of the Byzantine Empire.
