As an Arab-American myself, I appreciate shining a light on our marginalized society in this country. I love that they educated people a bit of what we are about as a people in general. However, I agree with most people in the comments, that a "heritage month" is not necessary or helpful in doing that. Plus, there are so many other cultures and races that are more common in the country but that doesn't mean that everyone needs to have a "heritage month". I personally think black history month is different and specific because their roots go deep in America and are not immigrants or just a different race; but that is a different conversation...

We don't need Arab American Heritage month any more than we need any other "heritage" month. I'm not sure if people have noticed, but the United States is comprised of a lot more than 12 ethnically/racially/culturally/geographically distinct peoples, and we've only got 12 months in the year to work with. To give priority to any one of those groups above others would be an act of discrimination, racial or otherwise. If you want a Heritage Month, make it a HERITAGE month, where everyone is encouraged to learn about, explore, and celebrate their own heritage. Find out where they come from, what their ancestors were like, and the culture they were a part of.

Arab American Heritage Month is a great idea. Obviously we should celebrate heritage all year round. But if you don’t know any Arab folks and you don’t schedule time to educate yourself, be real-are you gonna take time out of your day to learn and celebrate Arab heritage (and every other culture out there if you don’t “believe” in heritage months)? This isn’t the ONLY time to celebrate, it is another reason TO celebrate. Since the news is flooded with painful images and messages about Arabs and Arab Americans, a celebratory message of joy, life, and triumph is a welcomed sight in my books.

White people were the very first people to end slavery and the very last people to ever be racist white people were corrupted by racism in slavery but God forbid if we have heritage month that's racist. Black people stared the slave trayed and they have a black history month. Arturo Martinez the only common similarity between us is Islam. We don’t eat the same foods. We don’t wear remotely similar cultural clothing. Our music doesn’t even have any Arabic influence.

Y’all need to get better at social integration first. Do arabs have black or Asian friends? Spouses? Don’t just come to America and try to enrich yourselves. I’m biracial and I have never even met an Arab before.

Do the natives and jewisg got a month as well? It's okay to be proud of your heritage, but claiming a month for each heritage is kinda counterproductive towards tolerance. Kinda ridiculous if you ask me because the US is made up of multicultural people, even among whites there are different stark heritage.

I this groups heart is in the right place, but i don't feel "we" need a month. Arab is an ethnicity (held together by a common language, Arabic). Arab is not a race (some Arabs are fair and do look "white", some have darker features), Arab is not a religion (some Arabs are Christian, Muslim or Jewish). Each Arab country is very different in it's culture, mentality, religious composition etc. I think being proud of who you are and educating people are positive actions, but I don't think representing a group as a repressed marganalized community that needs a "month" is the way to go.

I understand that atrocities shouldn't make you an applicant for recognition. But i think this would diminish the importance of black history month in america. Black history is so prevalent and ingrained into America and needs to be singular remembrance month(Months if it were up to me). And by diluting the culture and including different heritage for every month, it would inadvertently make it pointless. So whilst i emphasise with the plights mentioned, i would have to disagree.
