Great advice and I continue to hold my key positions, however if you know that things like inflation are going to affect the market short term, is there anything wrong with selling something you have high conviction for and buying it back at a later date?
@stoffelbrian
2 жыл бұрын
Here's the tricky part -- if *YOU* know inflation will affect things short-term, then *EVERYONE ELSE* probably knows that too, and has traded accordingly. That's not to say selling something is wrong -- the market could surely continue downward. And if it helps you sleep at night, it's definitely worth it. But if it's because you think you know where the stock will be going in the short-term, that's not as assured as you might think.
@TheRealDaveATL
2 жыл бұрын
If inflation is the worry, there's no better place to be than in stocks. With stocks, you own shares of businesses that can raise prices should their costs increase, minimizing the damage inflation can do. On the other hand, cash is a SURE THING to depreciate in buying power in an inflationary environment, making it a terrible asset to hold during inflationary periods. As difficult as high market volatility can be to stomach, long-term you're going to be better off having equity in good businesses than any alternative. Also, if inflation turns out to be short-term there's a better-than-average chance you'll be buying back those shares at higher prices. It's not so much inflation as the fear of higher interest rates that is spooking the market right now. Any whiff of inflation actually turning out to be "transitory" will send the markets higher because the Fed will not have to raise rates as aggressively. I've seen a lot of these cycles come and go and what works for me in a down market is the same as what works for me in an up market: Find well-run companies that have great products and throw off a lot of free cash flow (or at least have a clear path to doing so). Then just hold on as they re-invest earnings and compound your investment. Tune out most everything else. 😀

Great video as always guys, I am interested in your opinions on dip-buying, - when stocks correct into lower price territory than what you had initially bought it for, is a reassessment on the BUY position necessary if nothing fundamental has changed? What would not be a good reason to buy more if it’s cheaper amidst uncontrollable events? (i.e China fears and Omicron)
@TheRealDaveATL
2 жыл бұрын
Just speaking for myself, if I had excess capital parked in cash to invest, I would put it to work by buying more shares. I wouldn't borrow money to invest. I wouldn't use any "emergency funds" to invest. If you like a like a company at $X, and nothing fundamental has changed, why wouldn't you like them more at $X less 20%? One caution, however: Just as markets can overshoot on the way up, they can overcorrect on the way down. We may not have seen the lows yet.
@BrianFeroldiYT

Good question -- it depends on why the stock is falling. In this case, most growth stocks are getting sold off, so it's less likely to be company-specific. In some cases the company deserves it. As always, the key is understand if the business is broken or if the stock is broken.

No one likes to lose money. I always try to look at downdrafts in the market as healthy stress-testing of my portfolio and personal finances. Also, I have no intention of selling the businesses I own for many years, so it doesn't really matter what the stock price does tomorrow, next week, or even next year. I pay attention to sales, billings, expenses, cash flow, competition, and other important BUSINESS stuff. Stock price is way down the list. That being said, I may ocassionally "skim some cream off the top" by selling a handful of shares, if I really feel a holding's stock price has gotten way ahead of itself. Paid off my mortgage early doing exactly that. And not having a mortgage payment feels great. But, in general, I hate to sell ANY shares of a business, if it is performing well. I want to stay fully invested and let them keep doing that compounding thing I like so much. 😀

Really appreciate your contribution to this channel. I was actually debating whether or not to sell Upstart when it was $400+ (up over 300% for me). Figured that the quick and steep climb was the stock getting way ahead of itself. But then I remember what my friends told me, that they sold out of Shopify after a massive run up, and now they wish they had held.. 🤷🏻♂️ So it's hard to know what the future will bring. I figure that even if it runs up, you can't go wrong with still holding. Eventually it should end up way higher. Long-term.

Then the market would go down. Luckily, some of those companies are not excessively overvalued, so maybe won't be so bad. Who knows though? Once the twitchy-money herd starts stampeding in a direction, they can keep going for a while. Wouldn't be surprised to see lower lows all around. The nice thing about just staying focused on buying well-run companies with great products is that you can just tune out the twitchy money. If they want to sell me shares of companies that I love for less per share, I'm okay with that. Over the long haul, well-run companies adjust to the environment and come back stronger.

Every sector have their ups and downs. The whole year, 2021, has been rough on growth and esp. tech. The inflation and interest rate is exaggerated. This fall is just like the fall 2018. Its exactly the same arguments and critique against tech and growth stocks. The same bears that showed their faces then is doing it all over again. The only difference is that the inflation is higher now, esp. in the US. But its exceptional times with the pandemic and its consequences on logistic and transportation. It will clear up and probably sooner than most people think. The question is not if but when tech and growth will be rewarded again. Switching strategy now to "value" or FAANG is a mistake. I also find it interesting how value bears gloat about growth and tech falling while they themselves own big "old tech" that used to be the same highly valued, non-profit, growth stocks. Zero self-awareness.
@TheRealDaveATL

Good comments Tommy. Yeah, some people's memories can be pretty short. Personally, I've never bought into the adage that you're supposed to sell tech and growth when interest rates increase. If rates go up, I'm very happy with my stable of tech companies, most of which have little or no LT debt to roll over into higher interest payments. That being said, I do love me some of those "oldies". Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Facebook are some of my biggest holdings and I sleep pretty well at night.

Hard to know when to "switch" though. Personally, I try to just invest in companies that I have very high conviction in and not worry about what label they have on them. Some of those are "value" like Tractor Supply, Dollar General, and Camping World. Some are "growth" like Sea Ltd, MongoDB and Crowdstrike. Some of my favorites are kind of hybrid with good top-line growth but more mature cash flows, a la Facebook, Google, Amazon, Adobe, Intuit, or Salesforce. For me, the key is to have conviction in the company, so you don't bail during the inevitable times when the twitchier shareholders cut and run. I agree Avi. Valuation does matter. But you can only assess what a business is worth AFTER you fully, deeply understand that business. The Brians spend all of their time trying to understand the business. I'm okay with that. Only once you grasp what a company's potential is, can you have any idea of what you are willing to pay for it. And I don't believe in using artificial constructs like DCF models. It's like trying to forecast the weather ten years from now. If you use such valuation models to run your investing, you would have never invested in Amazon or Google or countless other great companies that always seemed "too expensive".
