I think one key aspect that’s missing now is the sense of exploration, real sense of danger while adventuring, having the fear of dying while you travel the land. Modern MMO is like mindless run 🏃♂️ through zones or teleports
@NostalgiaGaming
2 жыл бұрын
@@tinyblackmage Yeah, I always felt disappointed in FFXIV that zones were so easily traversed the first time and then fast-traveled from then on. Fast travel is one of the QoL changes I really disagree with in modern MMOs. Traversing the world is how you soak it in and engage in the game. If players find that boring or pointless, then you did it wrong. Make it interesting so travel always feels fresh. Put little rewards or secrets out there to make the risk of exploring for hidden areas worth it. Give death some consequences so those risky situations are a choice and not a foregone conclusion. Have random events that pop up in various zones based on day/night cycles. Honestly, I think MMO developer should have a team dedicated to each zone to keep things updated and interesting on a regular basis.

@@NostalgiaGaming totally agree. The journey to Sky, through Zi’tah each time and some times seeing an NM spawned along the way. Rallying the PT to engage etc. those were part of the adventure. Or camping in quicksand cave, or hunting for Artifact Treasure chest, those felt real and substantial. And Don’t get me started on rubbish gear system now, with gears being outdated in 3 months due to new iLvL. Stats are just bigger number with no clear distinction in elemental weakness, traits It didn’t matter that gear was hard to get, because the gains were big enough that ppl felt great getting each piece of the 75 AF, those gear lasted years

I was actually working full time when I started playing right after Zilart came out. I would dedicate 3-4 hours a night to it. Start in Windy, run all the way to Mhaura, take the boat across to the dunes ( fishing a little along the way), group up for 1-2 hours, then take the boat back and run home to windy so I'd always be able to refresh signet the next day. I still have real friendships with some of the people I met first in xp parties, then we'd do missions, bcnms, key farming, skill up parties. It was so much fun.

Never played FFXI, but Maplestory had similar traveling systems and design. Especially at low levels, enemies were dangerous, you could explore a high level area and legitimately get stuck. Players regularly asked high level players for potions or help or waited for mobs to group up and plan your escape and execute perfect jumps. And there were airships too where you had to wait for the next scheduled flight and on the flight there was a high level boss that could ko most players and so everyone hid below deck and just chatted during the flight. A chance to fail, become stranded, or simply wait for flight departures and arrivals is like the music between notes, the gameplay between dungeons and bosses. When traveling is more than press forward to walk, it seems to elevate all experiences in the gameworld.

I remember blowing people's minds on FFXIV: ARR relaunch week using the auto translate to make typing things so much faster. One ODD thing I don't miss about XI is basically playing the game entirely off of Macros. XIV I just go with the flow, but in XI you needed gear swap macros and timing macros, etc. In XIV those macros would ruin your rotations, I only ever used macros outside of combat
@NostalgiaGaming

I'd like something in between both games. FFXIV feels like I'm constantly button mashing, and FFXI leans too heavily on the macros (however, I kind of enjoyed assembling gear sets for different situations - weapon skills, Steal, etc.).

I remember my first Linkshell in FFXI... way back in 2004. "Dark Crystal", with the black linkpearl. Leader's name was Gila. Super cool person. I wonder how they're doing these days. That said, your bit starting at 6:26 is a common sentiment, but it's definitively incorrect. The MMO population isn't a monolith of players who started with the old-school titles and "grew up" with them, so it's all the same people. There were kids, yes. But there were adults, with careers, and families and homes and other hobbies and responsibilities back then, just like yourself now. They played FFXI and EQ1 and DAoC and UO, and all those old-school, time-intensive titles. I was already in my late 20s when I started playing FF11, and played for the next 8.5 years. My good friend was married with a child, a home, a mortgate, full-time job, etc. It's not that people now are somehow different back then, or that being busy with a career/family/home/etc is somehow any more demanding now than it was back then. Adulting is just as demanding now as it was then. What was different back then were the expectations and priorities and time management people brought into the MMOs. People knew they only had a couple hours, a few nights a week, to play... so they just set their expectations, and what content they'd want to do, accordingly. They didn't log in expecting to gain x number of levels, and it wasn't some horrible thing if they didn't. They might not level up for days. But it was okay, because gaining levels wasn't THE goal. It was a given. You play the game, the levels come. What mattered more was how much enjoyment they had along the way, the people they met, the experiences they had... all those things that made old-school FF11 so cherished by its veteran players. I don't remember when I hit any given level. I don't even really remember my first 75, except that it was DRG. But I could tell you, like it was yesterday, in detail, about my first trip to Jeuno. About my first time to Khazam, or getting my chocobo license. I can tell you about the epic crawler train I died to upon entering Crawler's Nest. Or the first time I saw a Carby pull and how cool it was. I can tell you about the hilariously failed attempt at finding the "Mahogany Door" for Windurst mission 2-1. All of those memories and experiences are what the games were about back then. It really was about the journey, not the destination, not about "racing through the content to get the reward so you can move on". That "go go go", "real game starts at level cap" mentality came later. TL;DR: The idea that "everyone playing MMOs back then was young and has grown up and has less time", etc.. is just not true. Again, the MMO population isn't a static monolith. It's a rotating group of people... new folks coming aboard as older fans step away. People's responsibilities and time limits haven't changed. People's mentalities and expectations have.

Modern FFXI is still group-oriented. You can do a good amount of endgame content solo, but the rate at which you progress is a fraction compared to a full party. Yes, the old-school levelling 1-99 is a few days solo instead of months grouped, but the essence of party levelling has moved to the 2,100 Job Points needed for Job Mastery or ultimate weapons (and yes, also possible solo, but quicker with friends). The endgame events and battlefields are all party-based. And you can experience lv1-99 content (including the storyline) at your own pace. You want a lot of walking, try tracking down the Beastmen leaders that spawn once every few days. It takes 20min to get to them from the nearest teleport, and then you have to still wait days for a spawn. I think too many people threw out FFXI as never being as good as it was in the 75-era as soon as the level cap raise arrived in Abyssea. Those couple of years were highly tumultuous as players adjusted to new content and new gear - things that many had strived for for years becoming worthless overnight; the prestige they had built washed away and with no desire to build it back up in the new post-99 era. It didn't help that soon after the majority of the population went for a fresh start on FFXIV or ARR (myself included). FFXI persisted and it's still great. New quests and missions don't hold your hand with quest icons or pointers. You can't list unlimited things on the Auction House, so inventory management is still a thing. Mastering crafts and hobbies is still an enormous commitment. The community discovers the new monthly updates together - whether that be the battlefields, events or quests. It's not all golden. On the busier servers, gilsellers, bots and mercs permeate the experience which can be frustrating for players who want to earn their accomplishments. There are many things that modern MMOs do better, but FFXI retains its unique position. I just hope next year's significant 20th anniversary update doesn't detract from that.

In the spirit of making seemingly counterintuitive arguments about quality of life standards ruining the genre, I'd like to mention one aspect of FFXI that I miss dearly as I plow through XIV: non-regional servers. As a night owl generally who worked a night shift back in the early-late aughts, I loved that 1-3am hitting didn't mean a slowdown in activity/population, but essentially a changing of shifts for the player base. NA would check out and Japanese players, with their rigid time schedules and general attitude towards the game, would clock in. It was a totally different feel partying with Japanese players (when they would have you), and it made the entire FFXI experience so much richer to have that diversity of people participating. I remember a really harmful myth about beastmasters that used to persist in XI, and to an astonishing degree: almost everyone you would ask about it was under the impression that a BST's pet would eat up party xp. Consequently, nobody would invite a BST to or want a BST in their party. I loved the job though, partially because you could just wander out solo with it whenever you want and with no prep, and for as long as you wanted. One day though, when I was out leveling BST late at night in Yuhtunga Jungle, I encountered another, Japanese BST of the same lvl targeting/charming the same mobs. We decided to team up, and the xp-ing went a little quicker for it. After that happening a few times within the same week or so, we friended each other and would hit each other up for some BST duoing very regularly. I didn't speak Japanese (and didn't have a kb that could access those characters even if I did) and his English was incredibly basic, but with the auto-translate system, we were able to establish a bit of a rapport - beyond just [throne room] [short time] when one of us needed to hit the bathroom. Today, FFXIV has a far, far more robust auto-translate system in-place, but it's completely worthless - everyone speaks English, and communication is largely unnecessary. A friend of mine doesn't even play with a kb on his PS5. He just doesn't need to type to anyone. And when 3am hits and NA is mostly stacking Zs, you'll need to get comfortable while you wait for a party to get something done, as it's going to be a longer wait than usual, even with cross-server matchmaking.
@NostalgiaGaming

Man, thanks for the thoughtful comment. It was really wild that everyone played on the same servers. The Japanese player-base did seem to have a better handle on the game, so it was always awesome to be invited to one of their groups. Also, I remember that rumor about BST pets leeching EXP haha - and admittedly, I thought that was the case until I read your comment just now. I thought BST had to strategically dismiss their pet just before a mob would die for full EXP?
@shokosugi2346
2 жыл бұрын
@@NostalgiaGaming It's been a long time but as I recall, that last part is correct, and having an active pet would cut into a BST's xp a bit, and so you wanted to "leave" a pet before the kill. The part that wasn't true (again, it's been a long time but I think I'm describing this accurately) was the part about the presence or absence of a pet putting a dent into xp for the rest of the party. It only effected the controlling BST. It was somewhat moot I suppose, as many areas didn't lend themselves to having a BST in an xp party, which would force a BST in a party to resort to a jug pet, making it a fairly underwhelming DPS role in the group, as jug pets (early in the game's lifecycle at least) would generally whiff when trying to attack IT mobs. Only somewhat moot though. Many areas did lend themselves to it, with IT mobs for the party to kill as well as nearby DC-EM charmable mobs for BST to manipulate. On top of doing decent damage in those cases, if the lay of the land permitted, BST was arguably the best puller in the game for xp parties. The reason being that when a BST used "leave" on a charmed pet, the only hate that the BST retained was that of a mob directly attacked by the pet. As such, as a BST, I could approach, say, a closely-grouped cluster of 3 IT crawlers, attack one of them with a DC-EM charmed pet, watch them all attack the pet as I'm already running back towards camp, and then "leave" the pet at some point on the way back to camp, the result being *only* the targeted mob chasing me back to the camp, with a little health missing and with a good deal of distance between the mob and myself. It's as safe as pulling can get. Alternatively, you could quickly recall the pet (I forget the actual skill name to tell it to return to your side) after it lands a couple of hits and as you're running back to camp, have all 3 of the crawlers chase you and the pet back to camp, "leave" the pet when you get near, and just quickly recharm it to aid in the fight, or even let it wander off for a bit to recover some HP for the next pull/for the current fight. There were all sorts of ways to finesse a variety of situations. {Also, you could charm a lot of aggroing mobs off when in the middle of a fight - ITs usually took a few tries and didn't stay charmed long, but long enough to move them elsewhere and de-charm.} If I may pat myself on the back, I put on a masterclass in this type of pulling in Boyhada Tree on one occasion when a Japanese party nearby where I was soling had a member leave and invited me to fill the role. I pulled for those guys/gals for a few straight hours and in two different spots, and they seemed to be most appreciative. Sorry for the wall of text haha. I guess it's been many years since I've had an opportunity to nerd out on the minutia of BST mechanics/strategies. Good times. *edit* I even took BST into a couple of story-mode battles that didn't have a known configuration that included it, along with my LS. I remember that fight against the group of "ninjas" (Mammet, maybe was the real name?), I made a joke about bringing my BST, and my LS leader was like "eff it, let's give it a shot. It ended up being most valuable. The timer margins (with summoning a pet, feeding it, etc) were razor-thin, but I was able to use jug pets for very effective kiting while we separated the enemies one at a time and DPSed them down. Point being, it was a woefully underutilized job.

Am I the only one who actually had LESS time to play games when they were a kid? Seriously, I struggled. I shared a PC with my bro; I wasn't allowed to play games during the week; and during the weekend I had a max of 2 hours to play. All that said, I still managed to hit level 55 on my BLM, god knows how, and I only quit because my PC died. I played some classic FFXI a few months ago too and had a blast. It's still as good as it was all those years ago, and it's not like I have a ton of time to play now either. Honestly, I think the issue is not that the formula is outdated or won't work, really it hasn't been given a chance since it disappeared. No good game dev has revisited it. We've moved so fast and far away from it, it's kind of forgotten in the mad dash for more "content", faster gameplay, wetter graphics and big wads of $$$ from pixel bikinis. With some work though, I believe the socially centric MMO formula could still be viable in current gaming culture. The real issue is however, what dev is going to take a risk when micro-transaction anti-social fashion show hamster wheel MMO's are so obviously profitable nowadays.

I was the youngest of five sons, so I think my parents were so tired they were content to let me game in my room all the time lol.... probably wasn't the best for me, but things have turned out okay. You hit the nail on the head at the bottom of your comment there. MMORPGs are extremely expensive and time-consuming to develop, so I really don't ever see a company trying something like FFXI ever again. There may be a happy medium to be found somewhere, but we'll never go all the way back to something that hardcore.

Its not that XI was better. Its that it was better for a certain type of player... Everything tauted as being "dangerous and exciting," from my perspective as a person who also played it when it was new, was always "boring, frustrating, and in the way of my fun." My goal isn't to go on a year long journey fraught with unyielding perils and setbacks. My goal is to buy a hat. Not a particularly special hat. Just a hat that will maybe help me die less... which can apparrenty only be bought in one city on the planet, halfway _around_ the planet, through about 90 dungeons that I have no chance of surviving. And I can't afford to not survive, because I have all of 4 gil total beyond what I need to pay for the hat, because of the aforementioned constantly dying to things that by all rights shouldn't be a problem for me since about 10 levels ago. And of course even once I have all the gear I need, I still look like a hobo and die like paper anyway because the game is designed to intentionally be impossible to play 1v1 at any stage ever for any reason. Still something of a problem its sequel XIV has, that... a lot of other MMOs from before and after didn't have. Its fine if you get off on denial of satisfaction... But that doesn't mean its a better way.

Something I liked about FFXI is that all your additional effort was not instantly obsolete when reaching 75. So many things you could do to help you out for a long time, like getting Ochiudo's/Ochimusha Kote or Emperor Hairpin. Equipment for the level 30 area that was still useful on max level. Modern MMOs are like two different worlds: Leveling and Endgame. Once you reach max level the endgame begins and all other work up until that point is now completely obsolete, all equipment completely useless. Leveling now is just a glorified, pointlessly long tutorial, sadly.

I started playing XI in 2014... very late if you ask me but even then I got help from so many veterans ingame, they were very welcoming, I was actually pretty surprised. But still I guess it wasn't the same as the early 2000's. My MMO from back then was Ragnarok Online, and it was VERY similar to FFXI, no instanced dungeons, you had to do parties with real people to do content, and there was freedom to do whatever you want, there was no predetermined story or path to follow. That was a huge reason I could never get into WoW, the questing was just so boring for me, I preferred to go explore and kill mobs and party with people, but it was such a linear experience it wasn't anything like RO, or FFXI even.

Videos like these are depressing. I want an FF11 remake / spiritual successor that is more interactive, since the game is drastically more interactive at the Su3 level for most jobs. I don't miss the struggles of Dunes, trying to find a Healer late at night. Using Trusts and murdering every single Goblin I came across has been one of the most cathartic experiences in my entire life. The itemization, skill bloat and class design in FF14 are trash, I can't believe the quality of Weapons alone in FF11 and how they made everything into a boring stat stick in FF14.

FFXI is hands down my favorite game of all time. I played from 2002-2012. I have tons of fond memories, but the one that sticks out the most is when me and my buddy were Skilling up in boyahda tree. (This was in the 75 era ~2005) We had just finished, and decided to check out dragons aery to see if anything was going down. We zone in, do a /sea, and there was over 200 people inside. We thought "oh shit fafnir is gonna pop" I was on MNK, my buddy on BRD. We started jokingly talking about what we would do if we claimed it. We knew we had no chance, because of all the claim bot users. But we figured we would at least stick around to watch the drama unfold. Then all of a sudden I hear a "Stomp, Stomp, Stomp" (no visuals because of the crazy high lag due to over 200 people in this tiny ass zone) So I spammed my target enemy macro, and as soon as it targetted something, I Chi Blasted that sum bitch and claimed it!!! Me and my buddy start freaking out not only because I claimed it, but because the red name, that glorious red name that popped up.. didn't say Fafnir. It was Nidhogg!! We both popped our 2hr, in an effort to do something (we knew we wouldn't win) but by god we made over 200 players watch us fight this bastard with all we had. ...we did die, but we survived a lot longer than we thought we would. Lol we named ourselves the Douchebag Duo (DD for short). And we still occasionally talk about it when we hang out.

Everything you said is spot on. I played FFXI from beta through Seekers of Audolin. I moved on to other things in life after that. Some friends from that game recently got me to buy FFXIV and play on their server. I had some fun, but it felt very hollow. Its weird. I have friends on that game. But I never really saw them. I grinded my way through missions so that I could get up to level. The missions that need a party I just used the system that matched me with random other people. Quest are very straight forward. just follow the icons on your map. The quest itself is usually in or very near the area of that NPC. Go kill some beetles up yonder. Go check this spot down the block or whatever. Long story short...I can't tell you the name of any other player I've run across. I have no idea how to get around much of the cities or areas without my map. In XI I could close my eyes if you ran my charecter into the middle of anywhere I could look around, know where I'm at and walk myself to the nearest town,teleporter or home. I could go to town and see random people and know what jobs they usually run on, or what crafts they do. Give me some random NPC's name and know what quest or rewards they give. XIV just feels like a single player RPG where you sometimes play with real people every once in a while.

I have a lot of great memories playing FFXI. One of the best ones was when I was trying to solo Genkai 2 in Xarcabard and didn't have a clue what I was doing. I was shouting for help and this married couple did come help me. One of them had to go back to their home nation, change jobs and came back. Walked me through it so I could complete the quest. They took a lot of their personal time to help someone they never met before. It was this really awesome feeling of community that you just can't get anymore. @6:00 -- Let me stop you right there. I had all those responsabilities back in 2003+ myself. Still made it to level 75 and finished most content up to ToAU. The argument that : "Would not have time today" is wrong. I had only the sundays where I could play from like 1pm to 5pm. The other days I had a few minutes up to an hour, maybe two hours if I got lucky. Yes it's harsh, but it makes the game far more rewarding. And it is possible. You just wont be able to seek a party for 3½ hours for your thief and then level in that party for 3-4 hours anymore, but it is possible ! Sorry but that argument is the defacto excuse thrown around by players, designers, and just about everything. To me it's as insulting as "You think you do, but you don't" It's simply not true. But IT WILL alter how you schedule your gameplay and makes online friends with same-ish availability worth more gil than a noble tunic ! Loved the vid, FFXI was awesome (still is today but Parties do not exist and that kinda killed the soul of the game. Also level 99 cap be damned. Thanks for the Reddit post which brought me here. I just came back from since 2011, and wowsa... still quality stuff. The music is the best in the whole FF series IMO. Now everything we had to for takes mins with trusts. I know the endgame has evolved significantly, but I don't plan on touching it (unless I meet some people willing to guide me into it lol.) For now, I'm just having fun revisiting old areas and wrapping up main-quest lines. What makes me take XI over XIV any day is the versatility. Equipping and swapping gear as-needed, using skills in unconventional ways, etc etc. XIV I simply call Final Fantasy Land, because you just have the generic gear sets of blahblah, and dungeons/raids are on-rails; with most of it all being homage to previous FF. Vana'Diel just feels more wholesome, XIV feels ...current gamer generation lol.

I agree with everything you said (well done!) except for ONE thing. I honestly don't think a hardcore MMORPG (like old-school FFXI) would be "dead in the water" today. It seems like an automatic comment whenever this topic comes up. Maybe because nobody wants to admit that they still have free time, hobbies, or enjoy video games as an adult? There is also a huge rise in adults without kids too. A hardcore style MMORPG will most likely not bring in WoW/FFXIV numbers because of the casual crowd (which is smart if the main goal is $$$) but if we want to address or encourage developers to consider the "risk" of making something like this again - then I think we should be more outspoken about wanting the challenge back. From my perspective, there is still a ginormous population of people that enjoyed a slow grind and immersive experience/world to jump into (for all the reasons you said). Again - great video and I'm glad you made it!

Thanks for taking the time to write this thoughtful comment. There's definitely a segment of people like you said that will prefer the slow grind & community-driven gameplay - Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen seems to be targeting that group. Great video. I spent approximately 4 years on FF11 and, unfortunately, I allowed it derail my life a bit before I got my act together. No job, poor social skills and little incentive to go outside. As detrimental this game was among other issues I had, it doesn't change the very real relationships and experiences I've had and it is interesting how I think of this game not as an old game I used to play, but as an old life I once had. I miss the people, the world and the adventures to the point where I sometimes have to catch myself because it genuinely hurts to think about how much more of a life I had in this game than in real life. I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. I am a grown man now with children of my own and a career and I have to screen games and choose to play simple 10-20 hour experiences like Uncharted, The Last of Us and Resident Evil. Thank you for this video. It is a great piece of nostalgia and everyone who played this game will remember their days in it until their last day.

As a 22 year old currently playing my first MMO ever (that being XIV), I totally understand where you're coming from. It's the same reason I appreciate Morrowind so much more than Skyrim. There's a certain feeling to having to take your time, discover things for yourself, struggle with each important battle and never get off too easily. However, that experience is not why I wanted to try an MMO. I play XIV for one major reason; my friends. I don't think a grueling, difficult journey is the only way to enjoy an experience like this. Yes, of course, if getting that piece of gear is incredibly difficult it will feel more special by default. However i'm invested in XIV because I play it with friends. We hang out and talk, we do roulettes and raids together, we make fun glams and decorate our FC house, we experience the story blind and rave about each twist and turn, we adore the amazing soundtrack when we fight major bosses. It's a genuinely special experience, and I don't think it's fair to say that MMOs NEED to be hardcore timesinks to be special. Did I miss out on the experience XI offered two decades ago? Of course I did. But if I only had that experience, I'd be so attached to it that I wouldn't be able to appreciate what XIV offers right now. Just like in 20 years I'll be so attached to what I had with XIV that I'll think whatever new wave of MMO is popular by then has lost the soul of what made the genre special. It's the nature of nostalgia, nothing is ever quite as good as what you loved when you were younger, because it's different and you're different and you wish it all wasn't.

FFXI is still the best one ever made by far. As far as main titles for the series it is also my favorite. The game has evolved so much since it began but has still felt like the same game the whole time. I would also bet it has made the most money of all the FF titles as its been going so long and has had a huge player base for nearly all its time. Less now yes but like most I know for every one person playing it its actually 2/3 characters as many duel box. which means they are paying twice as much just to play and are more than willing to do so.

My first and really only MMO experience. Obviously tons of great memories, but some standouts were my first time walking to jueno after hitting lvl 20 or so. It took forever because I had to wait for mobs to turn away and sneak behind the whole way. I remember taking a group screenshot after hitting lvl 40 in crawlers nest. Only to de-lvl the very next fight lol. Lvling in the jungles was crazy too. It was always stressful when a party member had to leave. You find a replacement who now has to traverse the landscape to get to the party and sometimes you would just watch his health fall and die before he could get to you. Whole party would take off to try and save the new guy. Good times.

Yes!! I think that’s what made it so addictive. Making progress was so grueling which made it feel so rewarding.

Not sure about not having time thing, back in the ToAU era I was in a very hardcore endgame LS and at 19, I was the youngest. People would often schedule things around kids, after work, on weekends, etc. Having to AFK to send the kids to bed seemed to be an everyday thing, and a lot of them played with their partners and were on the same LS. Who knows, maybe I just lucked out, but all of them seemed very much responsible adults, that could still do Dynamis, HNM hunts and other stuff... Granted, we all had established characters by that time, so maybe the issue would be to get there, but still think it's possible.
