All of the failings of popular media seem to bottleneck in the belief that the most fundamental human experience is politics. At best the emotional, even the spiritual essence of a work is treated as a means of achieving to the true atomic unit of art, the political statement. At worst, metaphor itself is misinterpreted as a candy-flavored coating used to make political assertions more palatable.

Yeah... "the political" supplanted "the meaningful". This is a trait common to all ideologies of modernity, be it liberalism, communism or fascism... they are all obsessed with monopolization of meaning and twisting it into its own shallow tenets.
@ImperfectWeapons

@@MagneMirare "The monopolization of meaning." All the most impactful films I can think of struggle with meaning like it's a living animal. They don't try to bottle it up or pretend to have catch-all answers to the human condition. The best ones will follow artistic intuition off a cliff, even when it flies in the face of reason. People obsessed with a "message" don't have the stones for that. It's likely you've already seen it, but if you haven't go watch Tarkovsky's The Sacrifice.

It's also the arrogance to rewrite the story and lore to your liking or ignore it even if the best authors in the world wrote it. The hubris to think you can do better than them, to want to take the credit for it.

I don't think it's politics at all. I would have no problem watching a movie about some dude lobbying for solar panels and making shady deals and then the author can decide if he gets rich in the process or not. It's all about worldview. If you say "women are just as intelligent as men" that's an empiric statement. I can just look at all the women I know and all the men I know and see if that seems about right. But then it gets deeper. If women are as smart as men they are equally dangerous as politicians, right? Right. No! Because women aren't as evil as men. Doesn't that imply that men are ... subhuman? Or like the idea that a black person should be president because it's "their turn". Doesn't that imply that when leadership is like a participation trophy that we are doing so well that everything is smooth sailing? Why then are you standing here with a sign that says "ecosystems are collapsing"? The thing is on an intellectual level it's easy to poke holes into the prevailing worldview. Or, to give another example one game I play has lots of trans characters. I don't like that and make sure I only get normies. Why? Because I think it's very much like a drug addiction. Some coping mechanism with maybe some social flair, but as you get older you'll regret it. Does that make me a bad person? I think it makes me a good person. But back then if I played a game that has druggies - I mean it's a fair artistic choice if you want to go for that - and I'm like, yeah, I don't want that, I would just release a user modification that removes it. Everyone would be like ok, cool, whoever wants to download it can, and everyone else plays vanilla. And now? You get banned from modding sites. And that's the root problem. These things are actually deep and meaningful. Only that they aren't convincing. So instead you try to force people into accepting it (that's where the politics come in - it's the how, not the what). I mean this is getting long, but my point is this is actually worse. Having some meaningless opinion in a movie is like taking a pill if you don't agree. Orally. Maybe it scratches a bit but no big deal. Pushing a really big idea is more like a giant rectal suppository. The point is as an artist you can put some pretty weird stuff into your art. But you leave it open to the viewer to decide his opinion on it. And if you are really good, you also put in other views and represent them fairly. And that part is missing. That's the childish shallow part.

Years ago, there was art created by elites who had studied the western canon and aimed to create the greatest work ever. There was also art created by people who had also been through great experience, that no studies could ever inform (war, grief, romance, deep spiritual belief, etc.) The greatest works being created by those who had both (Tolkien was one of those greats). Today, in our safe western societies we are producing art from people who have studied very little and experienced even less. They know only trends and politics that stream by at light speed on their phones. This is why I strongly oppose post-modernism. It is not based on experience, but opinions and reflections on the experience of others. It's no wonder Hollywood hacks and other such writers today can only write about their shallow identities, after all, what else do they have to offer? They don't know war, only some movies and books they saw about war..and all they remember is that it didn't represent them and their life experience.

On Star Wars, whilst the Original Trilogy is simple, the old EU got pretty deep with The Darth Bane Trilogy and Darth Plagueis, which I have yet to read the latter. Great video 👍🏻 P.S. I'm an American, but I just started reading The Withcer. I like it so far. 👍🏻 P.P.S. According to the Jedi, balance is fighting the influence of the Dark Side and the Sith, who spread chaos. But I wouldn't mind a Star Wars show, book, etc. that delved deeper into this without going into "The Jedi are actually evil" cliche.

Back in the day, Disney was criticised for getting rid of the darker sides of traditional European folktales such as Snow White. Little did they know the depths of 'tarditude that Disney could sink to. It was a bad idea to let Disney monopolise the IP of so many fictional settings.

I feel this personally a lot... I am by nature quite liberal (or libertarian) and alternative. But the incredible failings of "liberal and alternative" that are being demonstrated in the modern culture really forced me to reconsider how should I go about it. For example respect for tradition and ancestors is just necessary to be a healthy human being.

Honestly I think the complete lack of trust in any institution and general contempt of nationalism comes into play here. You can't tell big stories about big numbers of people without the trust that people know what's going on, and can anyone say that everyone knows what's going on these days? We were in the greatest Golden Age in Human History, whether or not you actually agree with it, and now it's collapsing apart and everyone's scrambling for all the pieces. It's going to be a rough decade, entirely focused on the present reality instead of any lofty ideas that the centre of globalist wokeness LA has gotten into their heads. And as someone who has swapped over from the Material Science Degree I knew I wasn't good enough at to being a writer who is about to release my debut novel in this climate, yeah it kind of sucks.

16:25 "To write such a philosophical masterpiece, you would have to be some kind of ephemeral, divine, disembodied eye of wisdom." If only there was someone nearby who fit that descripti... wait a second! I would be fascinated to see how you might approach such a task, MM. Even if you're not a big fan of the films, I'm sure you could deal with them, and their philosophical insights, respectfully. The Jedi Order does look to have some parallels with the Catholic Church. Both are ancient, powerful, and with leaders possessing a complicated blend of wisdom and blindness. Meanwhile, they have individuals within them who go against the grain. They might try to reorient them from within, like Qui Gon Jinn, or who become disillusioned and leave, like Dooku. Your own insights into the Church's history should equip you well for this task. 15:45 "The premise is actually quite ingenius." Excellent works have come from terrible premises and vice versa. As they said in revolutionary France, it's all in the execution. One of my favourite works is Toradora. It's animated adaptation is popular, but the book series is even better. The series premise is that of a cliched rom-com, where a guy and a girl form an uneasy alliance to get with each others' best friends. The show turns out to be a complicated exploration in family dynamics and abandonment, and culminates with a young man tackling the difficult task of undoing decades of family turmoil, and managing to make good progress in doing so. The books go into even more detail of his mental struggles in doing so. Cliched, cotton-candy premise, surprisingly insightful and intelligent execution. On another note, on KZitem, you can find an abundance of videos discussing why modern shows just aren't up to scratch. Contentification, the ideological narcissism of creators and their obsession with identity has been discussed to death, but your video brings a new point - the creators' lack of true inner experience... but it forms less than one sixth of the video. If you ever make a companion video to this one, giving examples of creators, the types of inner experiences that shape them, and what sort of work one has to do in order to become a creator of truly profound work (like Shakespeare, Dickens, Sapkowski or Tolkien), it would be a very useful guide for the next generation of creators coming through. In all, nice vid. It was like eating half a bar of chocolate - I'm left wanting more!

I have a problem with this video. Had you chosen to restrict the target of your analysis to a specific product (see KZitemrs like Nerdotic or Critical Drinker in respect to Disney's or Star Wars'), the criticism would have had some ground. And i would have easily agreed with you. But when you speak of western entertainment (with masterpieces like Shogun, The Good Place, Reservation Dogs and countless others) your arguments are quite shaky, unfortunately.

This may be obvious, but I'd like to point out that this is endemic mainly to the established production sources (and even then, you'll get something over decent every once in a while).
