You missed the colonial theme, the cultural clash at every level, the woodcut style representing the puritan ethics of Cromwell's crew and the indigenous Irish and nature in swirling watercolor etc etc etc. ps, the real Oliver Crowell who died decades before the Restoration was dug up, his corpse quartered and buried in four corners of the kingdom. He also put the entire Irish city of Drogheda to the sword because they refused to surrender to him, and that god had put him on the world to rid it of Irish Lice.

We saw Wolfwalkers on KZitem and my family (particularly my daughter daughter) fell in love with it, so we picked up the box set with Song of the Sea and Secret of the Kellas. I wish we could have gotten the movies singularly, but Wolfwalkers is literally not available in full anywhere else. Those old women aren't nuns... Their drudges... Broken and bent and old from years of service.

Mebh is more Toph with a Merida model. Cromwell really did deify himself as portrayed in Wolfwalkers. Whenever he says, "That is the Lord's will," he's not talking about the Lord God, but about himself, the Lord Protector.
@ModernMouse

True, Mebh looks like Merida, but Robyn is really the character most similar in personality to Merida....and yeah, I actually didn't think Cromwell believed in god until his death because he was only ever talking about benefiting himself.

I honestly drew more parallels between this and how to train your dragon than brave the whole story centres around a young kid who wants to hunt the same beast as there dad only to find one that changes there whole perspective on the beasts and eventually becoming best friends with it leading to them being conflicted when they try to convince there dad he doesn’t believe them and continues to try to kill the beast leading to one final giant conflict where during said conflict the father comes to realize he was wrong and accepts there child was right in the end they make it through now being connected with the beasts they previously hunted idk I feel like these two movies follow pretty much the same layout and idea but they both approach it in such drastically different ways and the message comes through just as well in both of them I personally am in love with both these films

I have seen Wolfwalkers, and I'm in the middle of watching it again. Apple TV is terrible at this point with the constant bufferings every two minutes and the constant crashing. I really enjoy Wolfwalkers. Its indeed a masterpiece, and I like the hand-drawn and painted style. Did you know they used Blender at one point for the Wolf sight? They did well animating the characters, though some drawn lines are visible throughout the movie. The story was well made, with little to no contrived sections/plot holes. I haven't found a scene that broke the immersion. The relationship between the main characters, the antagonists, the protagonists, the environment, etc. There are a few points in the story they could've improved on, (such as when Robyn (spoilers) nearly gets shot by Lord Protector in his trophy room. I would've preferred the scene cut from the blast of the pistol to Robyn falling into the moat, implying she could've been shot, adding credibility to Lord Protector's aim later in the story). Basically a near perfect story! Music was well made and rarely takes over scenes where its suppose to take a backseat. Subtitles need some work, but I can ignore it. All and all, despite a few issues I have with the story (one mentioned previously), it's quite an amazing film. I hope the Wolfwalkers team are doing well!

@@ModernMouse Througth they are making some 20th Century Animation projects for Disney+ that started development long after the acquisition, both of which are co-produced with other studios (albeit not animation-only studios). In 2013 Princess kaguya costed billions of dollars of traditional handmade animation with the use of water colour only for big hero 6 to one the Oscars from 2016 (which doesn't even contain any Japanese culture) Netflix klaus took about four years to create such a hybrid 2D animation with SPA studios but was beaten by an unnecessary fourth sequel of Toy story. Then there's Wolfwalkers which was in the making since 2017 with the use of traditional animation only to be ousted by pixar's Soul. A movie I barely even remember that existed. At this point, I don't trust the Oscars any longer.

I have tbh One thing that does bother me about animation that involves religion but not done by Christians. This is that they typically Villiafy relgion and almost like ur suppose to think that relgion and believing in a deity is a bad thing. It kind of bothers me that they don't too often show another person who is religious but doesn't agree with the main religious villian as it gives people who may not be familiar with religion a sense that religion is bad and should be avoided at all costs. Yes as a Christian I admit the church has done things in the name of God that are not of God(crusades and the residental schools for example) but there were and are people that stand against these claims and I wish non Christian/religious media would show that.
@ModernMouse
3 жыл бұрын
The reason why it's easy to write a villainous character like this is because it's historically accurate and nobody would have stepped up to disagree with a religious leader. That would have gotten them exiled from the village because religion has always built itself off of fear historically. Could there be better depictions of Christians? Sure, but it's also easy to take shots at Christianity because it's the most followed religion in the world and really can't be hurt by the stories at it's expense. I also think that it's interesting that we don't see better depictions outside of Christian films because it's just not that interesting. The conflict involved where the villain is evil and uses something that should be good for their gain is much more intriguing and only makes them more villainous. I get what you are saying, but just thought I'd play a little Devil's Advocate.

@@ModernMouse True and I see where ur coming from I don't if ur religious or not its fine if ur not but as we say in the writing world (yes im an unpublished author) its easy to write a Christian as a villian for example but the books (movies shows whatever) that win awards are the ones that subvert ur expectation. For eg lets say u have a Christian man who seems to be the bad guy throughout the movie but then it turns out the main protanganist is actually the bad guy. That would win more awards than yr traditional one because people like stuff that subverts expectation.

@@davidfitzpatrick4254 The problem I see with making "the Christian" the hero is the same currently where the "straight white guy" the hero. Does it subvert expectations? Yes. Is it appealing to a large audience, not really. Thats coming from a straight white guy who went to Catholic school.

@@ModernMousefair enough but I would agrue that Christians nowadays are being privately persecuted more than ever at least here in Canada. We are nop longer allowed to pray in our HS (i don't mean saying the Lord's prayer over the PA I mean praying privately before lunch or pray in the halls) we are no longer suspose to talk about religion in school even though a lot of the subjects u can attach religion to (history and science esp) We are no longer allowed to sing a gol song or Christian song in talent shows but Hindus or Muslims would absolutely be allowed to do their music in the view of "culture diverstiy" if u want ot be diverse then why are u shutting out the Christian culture in the schools. If ur a parent that has a problem with religion in school I would assume it would be all religions but many of these parents who protest the name Jesus Christ in school would have no problem if a muslim or a hindu wanted to do a cultural dance.
