Another great video Nick! Cape Town is still my favorite city in the world as a tourist. The Algave region is a close second with the benefit that it is a safer area to live. I fully agree with you that it’s never easy to leave your comfort zone but once you leave you might not ever go back. There is so much to explore and learn from different cultures. We left the USA 10 years ago on a “two year contract” in Southeast Asia. We still live in SEA and now own a property in Portugal. We have become global citizens. Where can I buy one of those t-shirts? Keep up the great videos!

You came across so honest and passionate! What a great story and very inspiring. Especially, in the end, telling people that they don't have to move to Portugal to get their life in gear.....look around you and just do it, whatever the choice is. But, if you do decide on Portugal, dive into the culture, the history, the respect for it all. Great message, Nick. Thank you! M

If I only had a few months to live, I’d spend it in SA (Kruger, the Cape, Garden route, Durban coast ) But for a calm, retired life, you cannot beat the Algarve. You need to follow Nick’s recommendations to get the best out of it though. It’s not good to sit drinking wine… Arguably, you need to hike/swim/sail/golf and ride a motorcycle!!

Great advice Nick. When it comes down to it, I guess one's attitude can make any place and any life, for that matter, as meaningful or as meaningless as you want it to be. Your attitude toward life, the way you embrace nature and your zest for living a good life really shines through in your work here. You are definitely a "glass half full" kind of guy.

I am going on vaca in a few weeks and will speak to a few friends to see if i can get any leads but i would love to live there again now that im older and somewhat wider, lol! I admire your courage to move there 20 years ago and i know how intimidating it can be. If you know of any tips to find something that a Canadian/Portuguese gal would be happy doing i would greatly appreciate it:))) Love ur videos btw!

Thanks Nick, I wonder if you'd shed some light on the 'friendliness' aspect of the Portuguese, please be honest because on reflection of my various trips to Porto and The Algarve this year, I've been met with anything but friendliness by locals, and on one occasion, I was followed around Santa Luzia by a local man on his bike who eventually stopped me and gave me a diatribe on how incomers like me were ruining life for Portuguese people; inflating their house prices, taking school and hospital places, on an on he went. I suspect it was because I'm a solo female that he thought he could pick on me and I can entirely understand his point of view, an estate agent I spoke to also mentioned that there's a problem with North African immigrants which is compounding the problem with golden visa incomers. I'm not imagining this, it actually happened, and before I make any further plans to move to Portugal, I'd like some honesty on the situation.

Look, everyone has their own particular experiences. Like you say a single woman walking around would have a different experience to me walking around as a 6'4" large man. To be honest, I found the Algarvians rude in the shops. There were no niceties when I was buying something, but getting to know people, they are super warm and welcoming. I've heard countless stories of people (in the more rural areas) being plagued with gifts of fruit and other produce and the warmest introductions to Portugal ever. I saw what could only have been an American driving around in a massive Ford F150 in Fuzeta the other day, and I thought to myself, if you are from America, do your best to blend in (like so many Americans I have spoken to want to). The moral of the story is people are essentially good here and if you blend in and respect their culture, their clothing etc they will respect you.
@kilted4567

Thank you Nick and I appreciate your honesty. A couple of things; I'm Scottish, very well travelled since a young age, and am very aware of respecting locals and their culture wherever that might be in the world, it's one of the reasons I chose Portugal. Apart from my last trip where I hired a mini car because I was short on time and wanted to see as much as possible, I use the train and bus systems, always found them reliable. I know what I experienced and it was nothing to do with a flash car or inappropriate clothing. I'm not in portugal to be flash, or anywhere else in the world for that matter. Thank you. @@AlgarveAddicts
@AlgarveAddicts
Жыл бұрын
I wasn't suggesting you were being flash (it was just an example that came to mind of the American in the F150), I think you just had a bad experience. It's not reflective of the country though (but we all have different experiences wherever we go). Generally Portugal is very friendly and hospitable to foreigners.

Portugal is like marmite , you love it or hate it . Since I’ve being living here I know plenty expats hating it and have left . If you have money or retirement is where you at then Portugal good , but if you have to work here and get involved with day to day Portuguse life it can be very frustrating. The people can be very friendly but also very very rude . All I will say is come live here, for a while , not holiday and see if you like and don’t give up all your contacts back home . Work , accommodation etc … . My daughter has being told a few times at work she’s not Portuguese go home by Portuguse from up north . Great video Nick as usual.
