There are a number of sutlery companies which sell reenacting equipment and clothing. These include: JAS Townsend and Son (also has a KZitem channel which is excellent!) which primarily engages in cookery, accoutrements, and civilian clothing; GGGodwin, which has a great deal of weapons and military clothing (including bearskin caps, though I purchased my cap directly from my Regiment, so I cannot speak to their quality) but they tend to be a bit slower/less proactive in customer service than the others (took a long time for me to receive my order from them, around a couple months); others include the Quartermaster General and Smoke and Fire, though those are a bit more specific and sell ironworks, buttons, accoutrements, etc. for people who are already in the hobby (both are excellent though). Like I always suggest, if you plan on purchasing anything for an eventual impression (rather than just an historical fancy) you should look for a local unit and speak with them first. Don't want to buy anything of lesser quality or unusable for your impression!

the grenadier guards adopted the bear skin after defeating the old guard at Waterloo. i think it was the chasseurs of the old guard
@BrandonF

Specifically it was the much taller, 'modern' style of bearskin which they adopted after Waterloo. Earlier forms of bearskin had been employed by the army, though, not only in the AWI (as I am wearing in this video) but also in the Napoleonic wars (though generally only on home service).
@ImpCaesarHadrianvs

No proof it was the old guard which was routed at Waterloo... Historians tend to say that it was the middle or even the young guard which was routed. The old guard kept its quality throughout the napoleonic wars and would not have been routed so easily !
@Mulberry2000
7 жыл бұрын
Actually that is not true most of the men in the old guard died in 1812 and napoleon had to rebuild the imperial guard for Waterloo. It does not matter which part of the formation that were defeated. The middle or young guard was part of the imperial guard and these were the shock troops, the best of the best and was roundly defeated at Waterloo.. Also i have been to the battle site itself it is very small and hilly, the lay of the land is deceptive with valleys hidden. So from napoleon's point of view the British position looks not that high ( though the battle field has changed a little with the monument etc. The problems are the dip in the terrain, so it can make climbing that small hill look very steep. The battlefield is on 5 miles across.
@ImpCaesarHadrianvs
7 жыл бұрын
The old guard was probably the only unit which did not suffer that much from the russian campaign. There was no need to rebuild it. The guard after 1808 was an army inside the army. Middle and Young guard were constantly used because their purpose was to train soldiers able to pretend to be in the Old Guard. The Old Guard were the only regiments considered to be the best of the best and also the only ones to retreat at Napoleon's order at Waterloo.

yes same can be said for armies going 3,000+ back like the Greek Hoplites with their horse hair plumes, anything to make your soliders look more intimidating & hard would always be a plus to smaller or less trained militia. Plus on another note wouldn't a soldier fit some thin cotton or softer leather into the insides of the band to make wearing the bearskin (or anything else headwear for that matter) more easy? I used to when i was in the army modify stuff issued to me often.

@@bimazulkarnaen3520 Where is that theory confirmed? It presupposes that soldiers of the time had weapons that could be aimed with any success. Apart from the fact that the bearskin cap was seen comparitively rarely on the late C18th battlefield, any soldier who did aim his firelock and could see the opposing line through the powder smoke, would aim at the central body mass, helpfully distinguished by white cross belts. The function of the tall bearskin cap was to make the wearer more imposing.

One more use of shiny and impressive uniforms is that they prevent desertion. If your uniform makes you visible from far away, it is much harder to route and hide in the enemy territory. Both the general and the soldiers want to win the battle and they both want the soldier to survive. But for the soldier survival is the priority whereas for the general victory is. The general wants to make it difficult for the soldier to survive in ways other than fighting and winning the battle. Also, the general can get a much better overview of the battlefield when some units, such as the grenadiers, look distinct and he can locate them by sight even from a distance.

Armies in those days used to face off, sometimes quite close (maybe 100 meters from each other due to weapon inaccuracy), and musket were heavy, so usually fired horizontally. Most of the injury in the US Civil War had soldiers with half their face blown off as a result. I believe the taller hats with the large "target", ie the insignia above the head line represented an easier target especially with all the black power smoke, so rather than get shot in the face a lot would have been shot in the hat, saving lives. Just my opinion..

My coat, smallclothes, and bearskin were all commissioned with tailors in my Regiment. Otherwise I purchased my gaiters, belts, canteen, shoes, neckstock, and all of the other accoutrements and smaller purchases from various sutlers. These include JAS Townsend and Son (who also have an excellent KZitem channel!), GGGodwin, The Quartermaster General, and Smoke and Fire, all of whom have websites. If you are considering joining a group though, I highly suggest you speak with them well before you purchase any equipment. Even if something seems 'standard' across the hobby, various groups and regiments have their own little quirks and you want to make sure that the items you buy are usable in your impression and accurate!"

Ah, the bearskin hat is worn by the British Army's Guards regiments as penance for their cowardice in a past war. During the 4th War of the Coalition (Britain and Napoleonic France on one side, pitted against Russia and Spain on the other), the 1st Foot Guards was pitted against a regiment of Russian regulars as part of the Battle of Schleiz. Upon seeing the Russian bear advancing towards them in their iconic tall hats, the British guardsmen lost heart and broke, fleeing the battlefield in great disarray. Many men were lost. Upon seeing this, the Russians threw their hats at them in disgust. To this day, the Guards wear the bearskin as a punitive reminder that their misdeeds will follow their regiment for perpetuity.

hmmmm, right here we go. the bear skin/tall military head joys were practical. as heavy Calvary faded and lighter cavalry developed (post British civil war give or take, also why thoroughbred breeding and horse racing became popular creating a pool of light faster mounts etc) the sabre became the primary cavalry weapon. the tall 'helmets' were good at absorbing a downward slash being less likely to make it to the head through the thick reenforced leather and also is more likely to deflect a blow (if I could I'd draw a picture to the difficult angle a sabre would have to travel to hit a foot soldier from the saddle it you tuck your chin in and point top of hat toward the incoming rider). it is also why often the chin straps of brass rings and thick padded leather are worn across the cheeks and sit under the lower lip rather than under the chin, to protect the face rather than hold the headwear on. obviously some aesthetic considerations snuck in, but the thick tough bearskin leather or the various helmet designs were of some practical purpose. I agree that once battle is joined among foot units and the cavalry threat is not pressing they would very likely be tossed aside for the martial mobility required in the cut and thrust of the melee. but the kit did start out with a practical purpose.... it is partly why heavier straight sabre that would be used in a more horizontal flat swing became more popular as opposed to the curved sabre used for downward slashing.... anyhoo, something you can look up and consider. :)
@BrandonF

Interesting stuff about how the rise of lighter cavalry influenced equestrian sport- I never thought of it that way! Relating to the caps and helmets, you're right that the height of the bearskin could help towards lessening the blow of a sabre or otherwise 'fool' the rider into thinking that the target's head is higher. That said I wouldn't consider it the sole purpose for a few reasons- primarily being that, if the purpose were wholly practical, every man would likely be issued a leather or metal cap rather than the cocked hats they were. The bearskins of this time period were also not stiff things, and did not have leather the way that a cavalryman's cap or helm would have, and so would not do too much to protect against a strong blow to the head, just as an older mitre cap wouldn't. Similarly they did not have the straps a cavalryman's helm would have, which, as you say, served to deflect blows to the face. And, I don't mean to say that men would abandon their caps in a battle (especially a uniform item so expensive as a bearskin cap)- I meant that they would abandon them during entire campaigns, storing them before going out for forage, etc. So while I would agree that they do have a practical application, I think this is an aside or addition to their primary purpose, being a psychological one, rather than the starting point in their design.

Brandon2495 just as a little game, hold your sabre at arms length (or hoover pipe) then bend the wrist to try tap the top of your head, and again with head kit on. a practical little trick to get a bit of an idea of how it might work.... cavalry history let's say, post dark ages and from introduction of the stirrup. started off with lightish horses who would ride up and down a shield wall throwing spears (see 1066) moved on to heavy horses to carry a knight if armour with a big stick to punch holes through ranks to then let the foot in. at this time jousting was good training. with Agincourt the heavy cab died with the flower of chivalry and cab became light and quicker to harry the flanks and attempt to shift direction of opposition units and attack communications and logistics. moving to the sword meant dressage style training to stay mounted more the mount gait quickly, turn tightly for stabbing down at foot units. firearms made moving slowly and precisely dangerous, so quick horses were bred and they become a unit to try punch holes in the line again. though now of firearms rather than a shield wall. and also to force actions of the enemy. send in cav to force the forming of square which then makes a better target for artillery, and also allows a general to manoeuvre his own foot to gaps in the line... also once through the line, racing about cutting off communications and logistics making the conduction of battle that bit trickier as well as perhaps getting through to rout enemy guns. all requiring different horses and training. dressage style training/indoor riding was the height of sophistication, aristocrats spent fortunes on stables. the Spanish riding schools being the best examples still existing today..... hmmmm I think this got a tad stream of consciousness and may not make sense :p

@@mburg2711 Cavalry are not trained to cut at the head but diagonally at the shoulder. In any case the bearskin cap of the late C18th was a surprsingly light piece of headgear. There was no thick reinforced leather only a piece of tin plate at the front, but as Brandon pointed out, if such protection was effective and necessary, it would have been provided for all. The French experimented with more solid crested leather helmets in the 1770s, and again in the 1790s, and decided they weren't worth it.

Still, can't argue with effectiveness. If you see a 7-foot demon ambushing you inside a forest with a bayonet that can only be described as a 'RIPPER', you'll probably just piss your pants.

Notice, I said Ambush. Besides, Malekith just single-handedly creamed 2 platoons of gun-armed pirates and 2 platoons of siege cannons ON A HILL SURROUNDED BY FLAT LAND! So... Yeah, I guess if you're an actual witch king, it's even better.

Another interesting point is the chin strap is not worn under the chin is because French Lancers had been known to hit the bearskins breaking the infantrymans neck

I wonder when and why the British swapped their mitras for the bearskin. Traditionally (mid 18th cent.), it seems as if catholic powers (France, the Habsburg Monarchy, Bavaria) sported bearskins, while protestant powers (e.g. Prussia, Hannover-GB, Sweden) had mitras (also, Russia)?

One possible source is the grenadiers of the Austrian army with whom the British were allied in the War of the Austrian Succession. The earliest image of British grenadiers wearing bearskin caps comes from circa 1749.

Its not its a battle honer after Waterloo i think because it was the french old gaurds trade mark but they were gifted them after the battle after crushing the old gaurd

That is a particular style of bearskin, the very large ones without face plates and with chinstraps. But you will find references to bearskins in the British army going back to the 1760s and the Royal Clothing Warrant.

You could shorten this with: "They are expensive and were granted by the king (or someone) to brave units"

I got a bear skin hat back in May. I’m very impressed with it. The seller mentioned that I can use hair spray to brush it up and make it appear taller. Have you ever heard of someone doing this? I’m afraid it may leave a white residue on the fur.

I have not- and, while I won't comment on whether it would work or not- I would not do it myself.
