Why you are feeling overwhelmed with anxiety
Our nervous system is built to be in a state of balance. All the time it’s fluctuating up and down and every time it fluctuates it returns to balance.
When we have a big stressor though or a series of smaller stressors, this can create excess ‘charge’ in the nervous system; too much stimulation and then it can be difficult for it to come back to balance again.
At these times, we can experience overwhelming feelings of anxiety in the body with shaking, tremors, increased heart rate or lesser known feelings like numbness and shut down.
The way to bring the body back to balance again is to recognise these signs of overwhelm early and then to understand how you create safety for your body to be able to release the excess charge. The body won’t release until the brain is detecting safety, because the brain is making sure we aren’t in any danger before it allows the charge to release.
I do this with my clients in an 8 week supported healing journey, using breathwork and body based techniques called somatics.
