This week I talk about Steven Pressfield's quintessential book, The War Of Art. In this book, Pressfield very accurately characterizes the force inside us that sabotages our creative progress and stops us from finishing our works. He calls this negative force resistance. I believe resistance is a self preservation mechanism that keeps us locked in our heads, never developing the courage to look our art dead in the eyes, warts and all, learn from it, and then move on. When we make overcoming resistance a habit we ensure that our progress as a songwriter continues. We can only learn by moving forward. The process is the goal. The only way out is in!
