@@ethanashtanga I have been experimenting with engaging body(shoulders and hips) instead of shooting legs and it is not coming to me yet. What is happening is : from sitting I flex my feet and slide them under myself(already with feet pointed at this moment) - lolasana like posture. When I take my feet off the floor I loose control of my body, it feels very stuck, on the other hand the abdominal muscles are firing together with inner line of arms... That is why usually I do not take off my feet of the floor, instead I use upper surface of feet to press on the floor and elevate my hips, only then my shoulders come more forward than is the line of my wrists. Namasthe _ /\ _ P.S. Pass my warm greetings and a big hug to Robin

Great video! I think it's first time I see someone explaining Ashtanga in a funny way, with a lot of distance while offering sound technical advice :) Impressed! A video on jump through would be very useful too :)

Thank you. I was technically doing the jump back before, but your explanation helped me significantly polish my jump back and make it even better. Hearing you say, "moving the shoulders forward over the wrists" really helped me out. Now I'm landing very quietly. Before, I was just sort of intuitively doing the movement with brute strength and by imitating the videos. Sometimes, a simple explanation and a slight adjustment makes a world of a difference.

I dont think it is that I am weak, because I workout so hard and my arms are strong. I can do the tolasana with my legs on lotus and my legs straight forward. But I cant do this yet. It is all about the right technique! There is always a technique for every movement. Thank you 🙏🏻

So true. A lot of what we’re practicing in yoga is skill. Strength & mobility do come with the territory, but purely trying to muscle or stretch your way through any of the Ashtanga sequences leaves a lot to be desired. I see you sent this a while ago, so I hope it’s come a long way since then. Wishing you well for the journey. Much love. Be in touch⚡️

Hi Ethan, this video is amazingly helpful for improving jumping back. I'm struggling to jump back from Padmasana since long time. I hit the knees or cannot unfold my legs properly before landing etc. Can you please publish another instructional video for that?
@ethanashtanga
4 жыл бұрын
Good idea! I’d love to do a video on that. Until I get the chance to make one, you could try to start with a tight padmasana so they fit easily through the arms - then lean forward as much as you can to make more time to release the legs and land in chatvari... All my best!⚡️

Looks easy. But with overweight, simply my stomach is in the way... :) And, of course, you need much power in the legs to lift them from the ground. I still struggle to get my feet off the ground in the seating position... Well, I'm 50 and I started a year ago. We will see. Thanks anyway. Thumbs up.

Nice video, but I had to laugh at "If you stay tight at the core of your body, you will lift right up off the ground."... nothing is lifting for me. "I'm too weak" is the only conclusion I'm reaching. Or maybe I'm an avocado lol.

seems that time would be efficiently spent working on just clearing the floor....is there that modifications video you mentioned? For me, I get a really weird clicking in my right shoulder / upper arm when I jump through and back. Lifting to lolasana is fine but its seems to be on that rotation. am I doing something weird with my arms? When I film myself it looks ok but it's definitely not 'right'. Anyone else experience this? Advice massively appreciated as this movement is a huge bucket list for me x Thanks Ethan epic video :)

You’re very welcome! If you’re experiencing discomfort or not feeling quite right in those movements my best advice would be to work with a teacher in a traditional mysore class to figure out the right way to slightly modify or back off from it by reducing range of motion or weight carried in that area. I know you posted this a while ago so hopefully it’s eased up a bit by now 💫

Thank you; clear explanation. However; I don't have a Pitta body like you. I have a Vata body, with long legs and short toros. Which means I don't have the leverage effect when I bring my shoulders past my elbows. Any tips for Vatas like me, with long legs, where the leverage effect is not working? Namaste.

That also sounds like a favorable body type for this particular movement. Every body will have its strengths & weaknesses of course in a practice like Ashtanga - but long limbs & a short torso can be useful in these vinyasas if used correctly. Ideally work with a teacher in a traditional mysore class to find the specific cues for your body, but definitely try crossing high at the shins, taking the knees a little wider, shoulders down, straight arms and as soon as the feet are behind your wrists bend your elbows to throw more of your weight forward.

I have much wider hips than shoulders, that intact protrude quite wide from the side of my body... and have remarkable thin shoulder span. is this type of movement possible for someone like me?
@dontask4990

I don't think it will be a problem.Your hand position should be wider than your hips. Also, you can try placing your hands on the edge of the carpet.

I thought you were just going to say, "You cannot jump back because you are a big pussy!" Seriously, though. The lift in a ball thing is the most important. It is VERY hard to clear the ground and the arms otherwise. I have a hell of time with this, mostly because when we get to the jumpbacks, I am already feeling beat in the shoulders. We keep crawling (dragging) until we can run!
