I feel like to look good in a photo I have to pose and then I feel self conscious of people judging me coz I'm posing, it's a downward spiral

Scarlett Somerville this!!!!! Im embarrassed by posing because I don’t want to come across as selfish. But I know if I don’t at least try I just won’t look good. Also I am afraid of actually trying to look good. If I look at a foto where I tried and i still feel that I look ugly. This hurts so much because then I think, now that I actually tried I’m just still ugly. I’m just ugly. Too many bad fotos of me was taken that I can’t bare another bad one. It hurts

Unless you're doing a duckface, it's ok. Just yesterday I went to Prague's library. I live in Czech, I live in Prague and I am used to tourists. However, most of the young people stopped and blocked the entrance of the library, including girls posing in the mirrors and taking annoying group 'silly' selfies. It took me a while to take that in, it was rude to everybody around them. It would be ok if they took a nice quick 5 photos, but they stopped there for much longer than needed AND they all looked purposely awfull for the pictures. Just fuck off.

@-- ...yeah I don't know how to tell you this but a) people having worse problems than you doesn't mean your issues and insecurities aren't valid and b) this is literally part of my social anxiety. as in the mental illness. you can't judge people's lives and problems based on a simple youtube comment that was just about sharing a topic with other people? anyways, I'm going to assume though that you commented this because you have an actual problem and even if it was rude I hope you'll be ok and I still get where you're coming from.

I feel this so hard. Whenever me and anyone I'm with get together, I love taking photos of everyone else cus I wanna capture happy memories for them, make them feel beautiful with the camera, but there's barely anyone I trust to take a photo of me cus they either don't know what they're doing or won't take the same effort I would take. A couple of years ago, I went to the beach with my friends for my birthday and I went in a bikini cus I felt so good in it when I tried it on in the store. At the end of the day, after we all had our fun and took our photos, I hated every single one of the photos that were of me cus they were all super unflattering. It didn't reflect how I felt that day at all and it almost retroactively ruined the day for me. Took quite a while to let anyone take a serious photo of me after that and it's still rare that I'll let someone take a photo of me now. But one thing I do know now that I'm a little older, it is so much better to have nothing but shitty photos of yourself from a good day than none whatsoever. Bad photos age well cus of sentimental value.

(1) Try taking a lower shot - from 3/4. Stick your chin out and then down (i call this "do the turtle"). (2) Try taking a high/eye level shot but sticking your chin up rather than tilting it down (as if you were reaching out for the sun to tan) (3) If not, put the timer on your phone and go further from your camera. The closer the thing is to the camera, the bigger things appear! Play with displaying your jaw rather than your forehead

This is true. Photography is something I do on the side because I love capturing beauty and expressing the beauty I see in the world. I started taking portraits through "advanced selfies" before I contacted my first models/instagram friends. I have taken so many pictures of other people, and every one of them was happy with the result & felt confident with the pictures they asked me to edit. When people say they aren't confident in front of a camera, or that they don't have good pictures of themselves, I smirk because I know I can SMASH the challenge of making them say otherwise. I really want to help! I am really proud of having this skill of "knowing"/figuring out how to enhance people & make them feel great in pictures. I feel so powerful to boost people's confidence & love to give the people I photograph this powerful confidence! I haven't yet found the photographer/friend I trust to take good pictures of me, but maybe one day!

I love the idea of photography. I just love it. And I'm constantly watching videos and reading articles about it. I want to get good at it and I want to take amazing pictures of myself and others, as a hobby. You know what stops me? The idea of doing it to get likes on instagram, to get a following; showing off to other people. I feel like it is a rabbit hole and once I start it will all be about comparing myself to other people and becoming even more self-conscious than I actually am. I don't know if it is because I am afraid of being judged. But it is pretty damn scary.

Sorelle, YOU.ARE.MY.GIRL ! We share the same point of view about photoshop. I always say to my models and clients that I do retouch temporary little imperfections like acne, because it's not representative of themself, it's just something that will be gone in a few days, but that i don't retouch anything about the body shape because we will find the most flattering angles and poses for them during the shooting :)

Dear Sorelle I freaking love your videos, but I have acne for 10 years now, and I´ve done a lot of things to try to get rid of it, from visiting 5 dermatologist, taking pills, natural stuff and all of that. After all these years I´ve realize that I don’t have a problem with acne, is people who have a problem with me having acne and when I have to take photo for whatever the reason is, the photographer always edit that about me. I’m okay with it, so why can people be ok with it? Anyways I love your work and keep sharing the love in this community.

Like when you take a selfie you know how to get that best looking smile because you can see yourself but when someone takes your picture, and you don’t see yourself, so you smile and pray that you’ll look ok like how you imagine it to be but it’s not, always 😂 SO HOWWWW? Label it as a bad photo not a bad subject. I agree. Personally I say something to the effect of "hmm, not yet" or "Almost, let's keep going" etc... The dichotomy is real, and more than half of many, are not comfortable with the not right side of face syndrome. And the kicker is sometimes we don't always see the person we want to be consistent with especially with photography and self portraits. It's ok. IMHO I ask myself, when has being and speaking Ills on myself as well as foster a negative attitude twords myself ever benefited me when gathering self-portraits and other concepts on photography? Or anytime ever? Never. I always feel and am 10x as well when I am patient and compassionate with myself. It is my hope that the actualization that I have accepted about being 100% on my side whilst not being self-absorbed or egotistical, may benefit someone else. A Positive self-image is always to be reaffirmed Whereas a healthy inner dialogue must be reinforced. The end. Thank you for sharing. I like to think of myself as a classy individual because I subbed. 😅

I also think most models aren't drop dead gorgeous. They have the 'right' look for the preferences of the time, and as they are photographed they learn what makes them look better, and their photos are edited. They also learn to dress and style themselves in a way that is attractive. They have to do a lot of work to get to that level, but, as Sorelle says, most people can look attractive with the angles, photographer and so on.

YES, it's practice, I barely take selfies and look shit in them, but I often model clothes and those photo's look bomb af, and note 'often', the first 20 sets weren't that good either. But I got used to standing in front of a camera, not really having control over the angle and such, got to know some nice poses and once you have 2 great photo's you start to think: 'mhmmm, maybe I do actually don't look that bad' and that's all you need to look confident and smexy.

I want to share my experience - I was looking for a job and decided that I want a professional photo of myself for the CV. Because both my boyfriend and I have the professional equipment needed in studio, I decided to ask my boyfriend to take the pictures. All his life he works with visuals - for TV stations, festivals, illustrations, etc. He started taking the pictures and suddenly I started to feel very bad about myself -he said things like: this is bad, this is better, turn your head that way, nono, you don't look good... I was so uncomfortable, I didn't feel nice as always with him, so I ended up crying... A LOT. I was surprised how much it pushed my buttons about my insecurities. In the end I realized, he wasn't harsh to me, he was just doing his job, he's looking for the perfect lights, shadows, but he didn't work with me as a person. That's the everyday reality of models, right? So I started to direct the shooting more - I wanted to feel comfortable and beautiful at the same time. And it worked perfectly. I needed to be more direct.
