This looks like Goat Rock on the Sonoma Coast, where the Russian River empties. I experienced this exact phenomenon there and we know better than to turn our backs on that surf. When you are well above the surf line on the jetty, you wouldn't think this can happen but here you go...

And surfers have boards to float on. And wet suits. The person playing with the dog did not. Have been around water all my life; I would not put myself in that position let alone the dog. Combination of tide, wave power, debris in the water. All very dangerous.

It's not a lake, it has a tide, it's influenced by flow of rivers, weather, and can change in an instance. And people just don't listen. Alaska has 40' tides ,even living on the Oregon coast for 70 years didn't prepare me for that. Lucky I knew not to turn my back on it.

Except for maybe getting knocked in the head by a log if you were in the water & didn't see it, I don't see the danger or problem here. Increasing wave action looks like it _might_ mean those on the sand bar may have to swim across now. But they might also have an escape right or left, where they could still walk back. I'm lost. Disappointed.

Some safety points to consider. 1. Take note of tidal times, rate of rise and fall and by how much. 2. Sand banks are notorious for causing riptides. 3. Always keep an eye out for the direction of the tide. 4. Every 6th wave is a biggie. 5. Always let someone know where you are and for how long. 6. Always keep your mobile charged and handy in a water proof case.
