Thank you Erin!! Finally somebody recognizes how homogenized capsule wardrobes have become. You can be a minimalist and still have color in your wardrobe. It is frustrating to watch these videos and find that a capsule wardrobe means neutral colors, a blazer, and a British accent. Not that I have anything against any of those things, but that's not all there is!! That's like only eating vanilla ice cream. Also, it completely ignores where you live, what kind of lifestyle you have, and personal aesthetic (what actually looks good on you). A 20 year old surf instructor from Hawaii is going to have a totally different capsule wardrobe from a 50 year old investment banker from New York city. Personally, I would love to see someone do a color challenge capsule wardrobe, with NO white, cream, black, grey, or navy (except for maybe shoes). That would be really interesting, and a total different take on capsule wardrobe. I bet Karenbritchick would rock this challenge!

Thank you for this!!! I have watched so many capsule wardrobes and even maximalist all say you need a white shirt, a blazer and neutral staples. I never follow through with any of them because white washes me out, I don't like wearing it and would probably only get one or two wearing before it was stained. I love blazers but never wear them, they just don't fit my lifestyle. I love print tops in beautiful jewel tone colors, neutral pants are fine because they work with the tops. I don't need a lot of skirts and dresses because I just don't wear them often. If I had the recommended capsule wardrobe I would literally have nothing to wear. I garden, I paint, work with animals when I can and get my hands and clothes dirty. This is my life and I am very happy with it. Yes I need decent clothes for running errands, taking classes and socializing but the majority needs to hold up to dirt and be colorful enough to make me feel alive.

I have always wondered why all youtubers or other peolple who talk about minimalism or capsule wardrobe wear always white-grey-camel-black clothes and i would never come to this idea that you can have capsule wardrobe only in these colors, this is absolute nonsenss. I think you can have super loud clothes in orange, pink and green, but if you love them and wear them constantly, this is the point! I personally don't have capsule wardrobe but I just thought, which are icest colors to me, which are pink, blue, grey, white and camel and I try to buy things in these colors so everything would match and already that has downsized my wardrobe, because everything goes together and then I don't need more and more things.

capsule lists are good guidelines. i've always translated the specific item to what gap it fills in the wardrobe; black blazer = neutral, professional jacket. white t = neutral all-season top. striped shirt = any patterned piece.

I totally agree with the ideas in this video! A couple of things that helped me buy less and wear the things I have were the standard advice of knowing my personal style and colors. Now any clothes must fit in this framework. It eliminates a lot of random clothes that are never worn including most things recommended in lists for a capsule. Thanks for sharing these ideas. The goal of a capsule is fewer clothes worn more but not mandatory items.💕

Amen, amen, amen! I think the majority of the time the aesthetic look of the capsule wardrobe comes form the fact that it photographs well. Then we go for what we see in the photograph and we want our closets to look as good. But, unfortunately, it doesn’t look or feel good in real life. It doesn’t allow for individuality, weather, occupation, etc. It took me a long time to come to this realization after I started doing capsule wardrobes and I still look for videos like yours to help me get better at it!

You look awesome, Erin. Blazers feel old fashioned to me. Where I live, it is NOT dressy. Blazers feel more “work wear” and city-girl. I DO love how they look and I bought one second hand. I do love it but I don’t wear it. It is just not casual enough to feel like me. I love neutrals but I also love colour. I don’t think I will ever manage a minimalist neutral wardrobe. I just dream of it. I like being creative. I would get too bored with just neutrals. Thank you for the video.

I absolutely agree with you! I love and embrace color in my wardrobe, and black and white are just one of the colors for me. Not basic or staples. In colder weather I wear few colored sweaters (and pretty scarves) as my favorite tops paired with dark bottoms. In warm weather I gravitate more toward printed tunic tops. I never feel bored wearing the 5or 6 tops on rotation! Those are my uniform😊

When I started the idea of a capsule wardrobe for myself it was based on wanting to have something like the "uniform" I could easily grab and wear to work. At the time I was realizing my closet was filled with colors and patterns that didn't match, because I gravitate towards prints and bright colors. The way I went about it personally was cutting out specific colors completely and only keeping specific colors of work clothes. It became a lot easier to make outfits. Basically I got rid of navy and brown but kept black and gray which I felt went better with occasional bright colors. And got rid of white as well since I generally didn't like wearing it. After a number of years I learned which specific colors I really like wearing and brought browns back in, etc. It was a great exercise for me. And I totally would wear a dress every day if possible because it makes coordinating the whole outfit simple and lets me wear lots of prints as long as I have solid cardigans or blazers. That has become my personal go-to outfit for work. When I buy separate tops and bottoms I still have a tendency to buy colors and prints 😩 so about half my clothes are solid black to balance out my habits...

I just found this video while cleaning out my closet and I agree with this so much! To me, having a capsule wardrobe is having MY OWN and not one that is universal, because such a thing does not exist. I love mixing prints and basic pieces and I have a couple really special things I would never ever give away. To me it was important to get rid of things I never wear and switch to organic cotton for future buys, when I do need something. I am more conscious and I prefer quality over quantity. But what I do wear is my own decision.

Hi Erin. Well said - I'm glad you said it. I do have all those capsule basics, however, if a friend called up and said "let's go to lunch", I would never choose a white t-shirt or button-down, black blazer and jeans. That does not "feel" like me. However, I am working at dressing more mature and classic. I also love that picture from Peggy's Cove. Great video.

It could be a red blazer that goes with grey, tan, black and navy. Right on, thanks for this. We are all different and what we are going for is a wardrobe that enhances our indivuality and can be coordinated with many other pieces to get the maximum benefit out of our entire wardrobe. And if you get exactly these 10 pieces you will get dressed very easily and always look amazing😏

My capsule includes work pants in three colors- black, brown, navy, a pair of gray skinny pants that can be used for all occasions, one pair of blue jeans, one pair of taupe jeans, several white Tshirts, a gray sweater, and the rest of my shirts in shades of pink, purple, and blue prints. THAT is what I am comfortable in. My shoes are multi-purpose as much as possible but I still feel I have too many. I have trouble buying shoes but have lately decided to start investing more in my shoes since I wear them for years, if I can. Of course I have some loungewear and exercise clothes ... I am never comfortable with an excess of clothing. My rule of thumb is that it must fit in the storage I already have and I curate constantly. I have a small house and have always lived in a small home.My husband however...... could outfit a small store . smh

The only striped clothing I love is black with skinny white stripes that are wide apart. I have a thick boatneck 3/4 sleeve shirt like that, and I love it so much. I also got a LulaRoe dress like that, but adding a matching blazer seemed like a bit much since I didn’t end up wearing the blazer. I wish I had occasions to actually wear blazers for. I like pairing the dress with solid colored jackets, or my only black leather jacket.

I totally agree. I think of capsule as containing pieces that I will wear often, and can mix and match with other pieces. Doesn't mean everything has to be solid. So funny. I always thought it is obvious one have to pick up the fav materials, colors, patterns and only make a set - regarding all the seasonal weather changes. It was literally the first time I've heard about such rules as white t-shirt and black blazer - never had any blazer, and in a white t-shirt I look like a corpse ready to be shut in my coffin. (Ok, once I've heard about wearing every day the same looking outfit but hey, it was a man speaking ;) ) I wonder how it is possible people follow others' choices to such extreme point...
